Ignition switch replacement issue...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So my recently purchased 2000 Carrera 4 had this in the glove box...

blackswitch.jpg

So now, of course, the ignition started acting up, (warning lights would not come on with key in first position (except airbag light), no starter engagement... try try try..there it goes! )  I dug underneath to replace it.  What I found was this....whiteignition.jpg

As you can see, they are quite different, even though the poles are identical.  The black one in the first picture has the part number you guys refer to by Meyle products 4A0 905 849 B...  what gives?   I tried installing it, but it seems that the key positions don't match right so when the black one is installed, the key will not turn.  It feels like its at a stop.   I can turn the switch with a screwdriver, but it just seems its indexed wrong when installed.  Replaced with original white one, key turns fine. I'm imagining the two are not interchangeable?  Any thoughts?

PS..

Not a bad job at all once you find the right contortion! For me it was my back on the seat sort of, and my head far to the left underneath...left arm over my head with screwdriver!  About an hour first try...after that on and off in minutes to try different things...Enjoy!

So I went and got a 2004 ignition switch ( 4B0 905 849 ), put it in the 2000 which called for  4A0 905 849 B according to everything....VROOOM!  All good!  Maybe someone before me changed something under there??  And NAPA had it in stock...23.00 USD
