987 soft top issue (broken rope)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

so my top is finally working again. Everything is either new or serviced (control module, transmissions, pushrods..).
I took care to re-adjust everything so the top opens and closes straight and cuts off just before hitting the windscreen when closing.

However I have a small problem, when opening the top, it doesn’t open completely, it remains just a little bit high (maybe 1 or 1.5cm), so the clamshell hits it on its way down, and pushes it down. This makes the motor sound a bit stressed during the last second. And the clamshell remains a little bit high, it doesn’t close fully. If I press it down then it sits flush.

I’ve narrowed it down to two strings (one on each side) that are attached to a small round piece of cloth that was supposedly glued to the back part of the top. These have come off.  I think this is supposed to constantly pull the back part towards the front so while opening it sets the crease.

so in this way it is not folding correctly.

I went to two local upholstery shops but they both said that there is no way to glue it back in a permanent way. They say that they are done in the factory using heat presses and anything they do now will not hold up.

has anyone ever had this issue? How can I solve it?

attached is a photo of the same string attached to the correct place, on another boxster with a well-functioning top.

Hi, I have the same issue on one of the sides, did you find a solution to this?

Many Thanks

Unfortunately not. I have since sold the car; however it did not appear to have too much effect.

Ok Thanks, it doesn't seem to have any effect on the roof mechanism, but its definitely making a pinch mark on the fabric when left open for any period of time (assuming this is due to being incorrectly folded as its no longer under tension) .. I believe this is also known as a pleat cord??

Think I'll try and make a new epoxy bonded tab to the roof and reattach the cord/string once fully cured.

Cheers

Yes I agree with you on the pinch.

I went to a professional upholsterer and he said that if you use epoxy it will soak through the Fabric and will be very ugly from outside..

he said there’s nothing you can do for this particular problem.

but if you find a solution, please do update us 🙂

I'll try and find a inconspicuous spot for testing, but the hood looks thick enough to provide a key without soaking through.

Having looked at the other side, I'm not surprised these give out .. they are under considerable tension when the roof is closed!
