Accessing rear window regulator in 2009 Carrera S Cabriolet

The driver side rear window, the little one, had something go "pop" while operating the convertible top. Assume it is the regulator. In trying to fix it ourselves it is REALLY DIFFICULT to get the panel off that covers the window mechanism, specifically the post that the folding seat clicks into. The difficulty is that the female end of that post is attached to a major aluminum body element, and for whatever reason it does not anchor to it so when you try to loosen that post on the male side the female end just spins away. Anyone ever encounter this problem? Any solutions?
