Faulty Sim Card Holder

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I have a my04 C2 Coupe. The sim card holder in the dash released itself and will not return to its closed position. To say it is hardly ever used would be an understatement in that I have never used the phone module since taking ownership of the car. Although it is a small problem it is very annoying as it attracts your constant attention. Has anybody else had this problem or is there a previous thread that deals with this query. Thanks for any help

Yep - have exacly the same problem on an 03 996 c2 with PCM II. After opening the tray one time earlier in the year, it now will not stay closed. I can press it in but it will not lock closed.

I took the whole PCM 2 unit out to have a look at the tray mechanism, but it is wholly contained within the whole PCM unit and I was nervous about starting to crack that open!

Took it to an OPC, who said, "Porsche extended warranty does not cover any communication, entertainment or audio systems. You will need an entirely new PCM II system as we dont repair or attempt to repair them, we'll get you a price. Porsche UK will not pay anything towards the cost."

Obviously in OPC usual crap fashion (why are most UK dealers useless muppets IMHO??!) they never came back with a price. Nice - thanks for my business then!

I know one other UK person had a faulty PCMII out of warranty and tried to get Becker (original manufacturer of the unit) to look at it, who flatly refused saying they would not look at it as it was an OEM unit, and he would need to go to Porsche, who refused to look at it etc etc...

Be interested in any solution anyone else has acheived!

RJN.

You have described the problem exactly.I am also in the UK and I will try to progress the matter with my OPC (don't hold breathe). I only purchased this car in JUly, this year so I will be interested to see their reaction....will keep you updated.

If you're lucky enough to still be in the original 2 year PAG warranty period (04 production run started Sept 03) then they should sort you out with a replacement pcmII system (which will be a remanufactured one...).

Make sure they put the latest software on it (at leat 2.0 and possibly 3.0 but that may only be for the US) and if you have Bose, the latest Bose amp software, and pair the PCM with the dash, otherwise the wrong trip mileage will show.

  • 4 months later...

Well, this seems a little more common than it should be. Just bought a 996 cab (03), used the sim card holdwer twice and now it won't come out. Has anyone been able to get inside the module to see if you can fix it yourself?

Just thought I'd post the solution to this for all those who have the problem.

Contact becker through their web site and ask for your local becker part reseller. In the UK, its a company called AEL.

Order a new "sim card holder for the Porsche / Becker PCM2". Its around £20 plus VAT delivered.

The PCM unit can be dismantled fairly easily with around 10 screws getting to the front of the unit. I'll post pics for taking the unit apart when I've got them onto the PC. The sim card holder just swaps out with the new one, and voila! - working sim card holder again.

The reason the tray breaks is that there is a small piece of plastic which fits in a guide and moves a lever everytime you push the tray in and out. This snaps off, leaving the tray staying in or out.

A new PCM 2 unit from Porsche is around 900 plus fitting, so this is a cheap repair!

Well done indeed :clapping:

I ended up, after 3 months of negotiations with clueless dealer, getting a remanufactured PCM2. I trust the original owner had no issues with me knowing of all his French addresses which were left on it!

Anyway, PUK agreed to pick up the cost of the unit and fitting (took the dealer 4 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!), BUT, I would have to pay for the replacement mapping discs as they only ship reman'd PCM II's with OS 3.0, which will only work with the latest discs, and not the versions I had.

Cost to me in the end I think was around £400.... Oh well!!! I write it off as another gouge on the customer, but also simply a cost of owning Porsche.

Please let us know the details of AEL and the pics - I might order a new tray just to keep as a spare!

E-mail: ayub.kola@@qualtronyc.co.uk. They might take a bit of time to come back, but they're pretty good. I was going to order another to keep a spare.

I had a similar good will offer form Porsche to pick up 75% of the cost of a new PCM unit. Considering I'd just bought the car, I thought this was suspiciously generous of them! Perhaps they've had a lot of complaints...

oh, and 4 hours labour to refit a new PCM2 unit means it was a pretty dumb mechanic. It really is a 10 min swap out job, then 30 mins on the PST2 unit to reprogramme.
