987 top not sealing right

Recommended Posts

This is crazy... when closing the top, the right side doesn't close in the channel properly.

Took it in, they adjusted the tensioners... fell out of channel a week later.

Took it in, they replaced the tensioners (one had broken)... still doing it again a week later.

I'm getting a bit annoyed... is there an easy way to adjust this myself? I'm tired of losing my car for 2 days while the dealer dinks with it.

This thread has info on the elastic/nylon tensioners, and I suspect they just need adjustment.

Stef:

I suspect that the only "adjustment" they could have made would be to somehow shorten the overall length of the tensioning string or to replace your "stretched out" one with a new one.

If your tensioning string (which Porsche calls a "fold placer") has not broken anywhere along its length, I imagine it would be a simple matter to shorten the side that does not fall into the guide channel. Maybe tie a knot in it where it is inside the canvas flap, out of sight. Or shorten the string where it attaches with the screw.

Regards, Maurice.

Small followup... A rod popped out and made a scary crunching sound. So, I took it in again. After raising hell at the dealer about the time I'm losing having the vehicle top fixed, the warranty guy said "okay, this is silly, we're going to replace the top."

Apparently, the fabric had frayed and lost a strap positioner, and it was causing the straps to rub and stretch and break.

It seems to be working fine now after the rod and top replacement, although I admit I haven't been using it very much lately.

A separate question:

The passenger side window doesn't seal quite right at the top where the channel should meet it, and makes noise at speed.

Is there an easy adjustment? Weatherstripping? :)

Stef:

This question just came up on a 911, but it's the same mechanism:

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...c=26066&hl=

That poster's problem was different than yours, but one half of the solution is in post #8.

The other half, if it's needed, lies in the adjustment that is provided through the other access holes I mentioned in that post. Those access holes allow you to use a long torx socket to adjust the final closed height of the window glass, both fore and aft.

Again, do a search for the other thread I mentioned and you will find more detailed info and photos.

Regards, Maurice.
