Convertible top problem - 2000 996 C2 cab

Recommended Posts

When I lowered my top yesterday I heard a somthing pop and the top wouldn't go down all the way. I raised it to the service position and saw a plastic plate (about 8 imches by 2 1/2 inches) and spring next to the latching mechanism.

After analizing where it came from I deduced that it protects the canvas from the mechanism when the top is down. It seem that one of the platic tabs on the latching mechanism broke off. This means that the entire mechanism will need to repalced.

Has anyone had this happen? How is the plate supposed to be oriented? Can anyone give me a part number? Attached are pictures of the mechanism and the plate that covers it.

Thanks in advance,

Phillipj

Tried to find a blow up of the unit in my manual, but there doens't seem to be one, nothing in PET either. Sorry I can't be of more help. My car is in the garage with the battery disconnected as I have started to take if apart due to the intermix problem so I can't put the top down to get you a picture.

Then again, I think I am mad at you because you have that new 3.6 engine and my car is still just sitting. I hope you are enjoying the engine!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, This part is to protect the top when the metal "hook" it latching. If you need to operate the top without this piece in place, you must lower the top and manually move it away from the latch before you continue - the metal latch will damage the top otherwise! I believe I paid under $30 from Sunset Imports. Here are some pics of it installed.
