  1. Thanks. That whole operation is out of my league (I'm a wuss). I watched my stereo guy do it and I went back into the waiting room after I saw my baby taken apart. I'm an ME, but stuff like that to a Porsche I own scares me. :)
  2. OMG. Am I the only one with a wife who would kill me for using a butter knife? She wouldn't be mad about the Porsche, but the improper use of her cutlery. Hehe. OK, I got one out...finally. What the heck. Do they glue these suckers in or what? Butter knife worked and no dents to the leather airbag cover, so this is better than a regular and a mini-computer screw driver. The wire idea sounds interesting but the butter knife worked great. Thanks Loren. It's a beautiful day, get out there and take a drive. I'm going out with the top down as soon as the wife leaves and I can resume with the butter knife swap out surgery. ;)
  3. Here's the link: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...ent&code=diy_dp What's the trick with removing the plastic or silver airbag cover (piece #5)? I can't seem to pop out either of them in the Boxster or 911 and am afraid to ruin the larger leather airbag cover. Help.
  4. Do any of you have pictures of how this is accomplished? I love my 2001 Boxster S interior with metallic silver accents over the 1999 911 all black interior and want to transfer some of the Boxster interior over to the 911: 1- Side Airbag silver cover button 2- Door handles 3- Silver instrument billet Can anyone offer assistance and photos? Thank you.
  5. Cool, I'm trying it out on my Jeep and then the Porsches..life is tough. Thanks for the tip!
  6. Thanks Paul, I tried cleaning out the plug as suggested and the rear spoiler light stays on until I start moving (like you and the manual state). As for the top coming down, it does...new owner just getting use to car. The Boxster S has less moving pieces, so I'm use to it's movement. I do have another question: When I bring the top back up and hold the roof closure button, the boot opens, the top comes up and locks, the boot closes, and then all 4 windows close. This is my 3rd convertible. Is the Porsche Cab smart enough that when the top is closed (or opened) fully, the roof motor STOPS while the other procedures complete (e.g. windows closing and boot closing)? So it doesn't burn out the roof motor trying to raise or lower the top even when it's fully engaged/opened? I'm wondering because I've gone through a burnt top motor and replacing them is a little pricey. My wife was worried that when I went to close the top, holding down the top close button after the top is closed and locked into place that I was burning out the roof motor continuing to depress the top button while the 4 windows were closing.
  7. What's weird is that I'm driving the 911 everyday now instead of my Jeep. My Boxster S, on the otherhand, sat in the garage and after 2.5 years of ownership, only put 4000 miles on highway and Sun-only driving on it (no cloudy weather). ;) Don't get me wrong, I love my Boxster but something about the 911 makes it seem like an everyday pleasure driving sports car. I'll baby it, like the Boxster, but I find myself always driving it to work. I'm trying to sell the Boxster S, but the market is full of Boxster S right now.
  8. I appreciate your very insightful and thorough response! This is a great forum.
  9. Thanks folks! Yeah, the stereo does sound like my Boxster S sound system...everything in the front. Is there any way around the sound all to the front and not blowing the rear speakers in the process?
  10. So are the 18" wheels a better than the 17" wheels for cornering? While the 17" wheels are a more quiet ride? Don't larger wheels enhance the performance of a car since there is more surface area in contact with the ground? Again, sorry for my ignorance.
  11. 1999 C4 Cab Would these RIMs fit on my car? Front ET50 18x8 w/ Tires 225-40 Rear ET45 18x11 w/ no tires According to Loren's post above, these rears seem too big? How about these? 18" Porsche Turbo Staggered Wheels 18 x 10" Rear Wheels, offset ET40 18 x 8" Front Wheels, offset ET52 Porsche part #'s 893.362.140.00 and 893.362.136.00 What does the J stand for in Loren's post? Where can I find out the best offset for my 99 C4 Cab? These are 5, 45, 40, and 52 but I'm new to this and don't know where I can reference the best offset for my car. Thanks again for all the help!
  12. Sorry, I've been busy and asking questions on the road without the baby. I'll try it out when I get home.
  13. So all I do is fold the back seats down and then insert the wind stop into place? Does the wind stop fold up and down? Excuse my ignorance, the wind stop has been sitting in my trunk this whole time.
  14. Coming from my 01 Boxster S, I'm use to having the plexiglass wind stop always connected to my seat back and protecting me from the wind. Is it ok to drive my 99 C4 Cab with the wind stop connected in the rear with the top up? Connected while I raise/lower the top? Is there clearance? I'm thinking that I like the convience of it always being in the wind stop slots because I mostly like to drive with the top down. Any thoughts?
  15. I was hoping you'd reply. I'll check it tomorrow, but I may ask if you have any pictures if I get lost. Interesting, so you're saying the warning light may be because the spoiler motor is dying? I can raise and lower the spoiler manually. Also, in either scenario what's the approximate cost to fix either the connectors or the spoiler motor? Is there anything you don't know about Porsches? Thanks so much!
  16. I have a 1999 C4 Cab. I did a search in this forum to no avail. I've noticed consistently when I start the car that the rear spoiler light stays on longer than the rest of my warning lights. When I try to put the top down, the top down warning light flashes, which I believe is another warning indicator that one of the top lowering criteria has failed: 1. Parking brake on (which it is) 2. Spoiler all the way down (for grins I've pushed the manual spoiler button down to verify) But still the rear spoiler light stays on and I cannot put the top down holding the top down button. What works is to put the car in reverse for about 5 feet and go forward 5 feet, the rear spolier warning light goes off and now the car allows me to put the top down. Besides the "take the car to Porsche for service" answer, is there a simple trick/flaw I should know about? Thanks for any insight or advice. :help:
  17. Loren- The page cannot be found. Can you update the location with your instructions? Thanks in advance.
  18. I have this problem also. Where is the storage box lid? My rear engine hood light stays lit for a few seconds after I open the engine lid.
  19. Andy- Where are the good service companies in Atlanta? Thanks.
  20. Sweet pictures! The Boxster S and the 911 Cab are 2 very different rides, but both are uniquely awesome. The Boxster S is a go kart on steriods, while the 911 Cab is a refined sports car that has latent power. I just did the same thing, switch from the Boxster to the 911 Cab, and it's taking a little getting use to. Thanks for sharing. The picture by the ocean was great!
  21. Thanks earlyapex, I took the 911 out with another guy friend this afternoon. It's hot here, so put the top down and "warmed" the engine up at 6000 rpms. I was pleasantly surprised when I pushed the car today. It appears as if all of you were right in the sense that the car is sedate and elegant compared to the Boxster S raw, viceral feel (great quote...I'm stealing it), but when I pushed the 911 harder there was more to give. If I pushed my Boxster S around the same turns, I would have slid. So I am happy. The 911 C4 Cab provides less of the right-off the road punch and fury of the Boxster S, but it has more to give and won't quit when you demand more out of it. To quote my buddy, "the 911 is definately a more sturdy sports car." The suspension upgrade in its future and I'd like to pickup a GT2 Passport G Timers to check out my performance. Thanks again.
  22. Cool, you folks rule! I guess I know my first upgrade is a R0W M030 sports suspension. The GT3 sounds like a winner, so I'll check it out....Now to start planting the GT3 seeds in the wife's mind for the next toy. Thanks folks!!! :
  23. I'm going back to my original questions and I completely appreciate the great responses... I called a local Porsche dealer last night and spoke with a service manager and then I called again and spoke with a salesman. Not surprisingly, the salesman said that on the straight away (0-60) the 911 should beat the Boxster, but that the Boxster for regular road "racing" provides more of the feel of the raw power of the Boxster S and he also commented that it was a more "nimble" car. The service manager said that because of the weight of the cabriolet, the weight of 4 wheel drive, and the fact that the drive train has to drive the front and back wheels this is why the 911 C4 Cab feels slower off the start but was deceptively more powerful if it was clocked. He also went on the say unless an engine check light appears, the 911's engine is probably performing to spec. So karlooz, I COMPLETELY BELIEVE WHAT YOU SAID! But it stinks for the 911 IMO... :( I don't get it, why is a $95k 911 C4 Cab so much more of the prestigious sports car if a $70k Boxster S in normal, US highway "male" driving a more fun car with a better driving feel? I thought for the money, I was upgrading cars (if not at least laterally moving to the same driving experience with more prestige Boxster vs 911) because I'm thinking that I ended up buying a label...911...and got a less performing ride. My only 2 criteria have been: 1- 0-60 mph performance 2- Handling around turns In both instances, the Boxster S is solid and fun. It feels like I'm riding a go cart or a souped up motorcycle. The 911 C4 Cab isn't as responsive, it feels more sluggish on the start and on turns, and the interior looks equivalent to the Boxster S. Is Porsche a little nuts or am I expecting too much out of a 4 wheel cabriolet? Should I have bought a C2 Cab? A C2 coupe? A C4 coupe? I live in a warm city and I own 3 other convertibles, so I wanted a Cabriolet Porsche. Additionally, after seeing repeated [annoying] posts that the Boxster S is getting its butt handed to it by Nissan 350zs, Honda S2000s, and BMW M3s in various races, what confidence do I get in buying a Boxster or 911? I hope that I don't offend anyone! I consider myself to be a lifelong Porsche fan, I grew up believing that they are one of the best exotic cars out there and I am in a place in my life where I can buy just about any type of exotic that I want, but want a Porsche. I don't doubt the Porsche mystic, but I thought buying a $95k 911 would at least get me the equivalent driving experience of my $70k "red-headed step child" 2001 Boxster S that I've enjoyed for almost 3 years. I know go "buy a Turbo" is the answer, but at $125k+ for a 911 Turbo I'm thinking just get a Ferrari at that same price and I won't complain about performance. Sorry I'm rambling. I'm a little upset with my recent purchase and I feel like it's an end to a childhood dream. Porsche. I really appreciate any replies and I expect a flame or two, so be kind...I hope that you all see that I'm being sincere. Thanks.
  24. I asked this at Babblers, but thought I'd ask some 911 owners. This is weird according to the specs, but I can't ignore what I and the wife noticed driving both cars. 1999 911 C4 Cab versus 2001 Boxster S - Both have PSM - 911 has 15k miles - Boxster S has 5k miles I just got this 911 used and have owned the Boxster S since day one. Why does the 911 feel sluggish compared to the Boxster S on straight aways (0-60)? I understand that the Boxster S is a nimble car, but it feels like it's on rails compared to the 911. Does anyone have any advice besides getting the 911 checked out for problems at a local Porsche dealership? Thanks for any advice.
