  1. I think the lack of input is because it is very difficult - if not impossible - to add after-market audio equipment to MY03+ Carreras or Boxsters. This is due to the use of a fiber optic Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) bus that integrates the radio/PCM, (external) amplifier, (external) CD player and telephone. The only good thing about the MOST bus is that the radio no longer has a code that has to be typed in after a battery disconnect. Most people have had to replace their entire system in order to ge the sound and performance they wanted. Bill
  2. If you look under the "Remarks" column, you will find numbers such as "02-" or "99-01" or "-01". This pertains to the model year applicability, e.g., "02-" means MY02 and up, "99-01" means MY99 through MY01 and "-01" means all MY's up to MY01. Then, when you throw in the various model codes as mentioned by GranburyChuck, not to mention /R - /L (left and right side) and /LL - /RL (left hand drive - right hand drive)....well, you get the picture. Obviously, some care has to be taken when trying to determine which parts to order. Bill
  3. The 45,000 mile maintenance is considered "minor" maintenance. You can do most of it yourself if cost saving is your goal. Here are the details: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...=maint_us_mm_03 Bill
  4. I found this warning note at the end of the "Emergency operation of the convertible top" section of the owner's manual: "Danger of damage at the convertible top. After emergency operation, do not operate the convertible top with the rocker switch or door lock. Drive slowly to an authorized Porsche dealer in order to have the fault remedied." Not owning a Cabriolet, I would guess that the system does have to be "calibrated". Bill Oops, just saw your DIY post. Sorry.
  5. You might want to check to see that there is nothing (dirt or small pebble) under the door sill switch. I have heard of other owners with a similar problem discovering a small amount of debris that tended to operate the switch at random times....particularly bad if it is the front trunk lid - at speed! Bill
  6. Check your Owner's Manual - in the technical section. (In the MY07 Owner's Manual, page 328, the latest issue I could find.) "Engine oil consumption.............up to 1.5 liters/1000 km, (1.6 quarts/622 miles)" OR, 1 quart per 389 miles! Your MY09 is a newly (re)designed engine, so best to check your Owner's Manual....although 4+ quarts in 7000+ miles desn't even come close to the above allowance. Bill
  7. Haggis, I recall having seen a Porsche salesman enable the DRL's on a (U.S.) MY06 or MY07 Carrera using the PCM. You might try researching the owner's manuals (both PCM and car) here on RennTech. I gave a quick look at a MY05 Boxster owner's manual and a MY05 PCM manual but my tolerance for reading manuals is fading as I grow older. Bill
  8. There are many threads concerning the OBC. Try "+OBC+installation". Amongthe threads are: http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/obc/obc.stalk.pdf for the installation of the 4 stalk switch assembly; and http://www.boxa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=3209&st=60 page 3, post 73 for wiring information (for MY02+ Carreas); and http://www.boxa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=3209&st=60 for component part numbers. Bill EDIT: Oops, you have an MY99 Carerra.....sorry. If you search using the above search criteria, you'll find the wiring information for your pre-MY02 Carrera.
  9. A RennTech'er, LowFlyR, has a thread on this site that describes adding an OBC stalk on his car without removing the stalk assembly. I would think adding a cruise control stalk would be similar. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...mp;hl=OBC+stalk Go to post #9. Bill
  10. Here is a thread that, while is several years old, gives options for purchasing new keys: http://www.ppbb.com/scgi-bin/boards/986/mu....pl?read=761531 This may save you some money if your dealer doesn't offer a complete package - immobilizer, keys and labor. Bill
  11. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=661 I would start by looking at Richard Hamilton's post #47, and subsequent, on the above thread. You will eliminate a lot of discussion and problem solving for earlier car installations. Bill
  12. The following two paragraphs have been taken from page 201 in the MY03 (US) Carrera Owner's Manual: "Only tires with the same make and with the same specification code (e.g. "NO", "Nl"...) can be mounted. Tires should be replaced no less than on one axle at the time. Only tires of the same make and type must be used. Mixed tires are not permissible." There could be a problem with your tyre mix particularly if there is a significant diffrence in tread depth between the two tyre types. Bill
  13. Mike, MY97-MY00 Boxster instrument clusters are physically and electronically different than the MY01+ Boxster instrument clusters. Bill
  14. tia, A "gudgeon" is a piston's wrist pin. A "bush" refers to, I think, a bushing (bearing) associated with the piston/wrist pin assembly. Bill
  15. Check out this thread from the Boxster forum: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19074 The whole thread is interesting - but long - so look at post #20 to begin with. I used trieullionaire's kit to install a Pioneer AVIC-Z3 in my MY02 Targa. Trieullionaire is great to deal with and is a good source of information for the install. The only snag I found in trieullionaires basic installation instructions was that they didn't adddress cars with an external amplifier - either M490 or Bose. I had to add several additional wires/pins to direct the audio output of the Pioneer unit to the Bose amplifier in my car. It's easy enough to do if you are anticipating the need. (You haven't let on whether or not you have a standard or optional [M490 or Bose] audio system.) Otherwise, you should not have any problems with your upgrade. I, like most others I've heard about, did not bother hooking up the reverse sense wire and haven't seen any nav accuracy problems. To date the only problem I've had is deleting the Pioneer logo and trademark information from the start up splash screen. (I uploaded a Porsche logo to the start up slpash screen and the Pioneer logo conflicts.) There is a procedure for deleting the Pioneer logo but I think it entails removing the AVIC hard drive, hooking it up to a lap top computerr and "managing" some files. Until I can get a step by step set of instructions, I'll pass. Bill
  16. 1. Open engine compartment. (See "Opening Engine Compartment Lid", page 179 in the Owner's Manual.) 2. Engine air filter is located on the left side (passenger side in the UK) of the engine compartment. Release spring clips located at either end of the filter housing and pull out sliding drawer. 3. Remove the filter from the drawer. 4. Clean the air filter housing with a vacuum. 5. Install the new air filter in the drawer. 6. Replace drawer in the air filter housing, pushing it in evenly until the spring clips re-engage. 7. Close engine compartment. (See "Closing Engine Compartment Lid", page 182 in the Owner's Manual.) The Bentley Porsche Boxster Service Manual is a great resource for DIYers. Bill
  17. Sam, Check out this thread: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...amp;#entry22673 That shows you how to get access to the "globes" in the back of the instrument cluster. Bill
  18. Here's a link to the government's EPA web site: http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt Bill
  19. Michael, I have an MY02 Targa with the Bose audio system. I installed a Pioneer AVIC-3Z, replacing a CD-220, using the same kit you have. You will have to add some additional wires/pins to the basic installation. I wish I could remember exactly how I did it, but don't want to guess and give harmful information. I bought an additional wiring adapter to get the extra wires/pins I needed. I do remember that you have to get receiver output to the existing brown (plug) recepticle. From the Porsche wiring diagram for the Bose system: Brown (Plug) Recepticle........Bose Amplifier Pin 1...................................RR+ Pin 2...................................RR- Pin 3...................................FR+ Pin 4...................................FR- Pin 5...................................FL+ Pin 6...................................FL- Pin 7...................................RL+ Pin 8...................................RL- I hope this will help. BTW, the Pioneer receiver is much, much better than the CD-220. The whole system sounds 1000% better with out up-grading the amplifier or speakers....al least to a guy who has been around jet engines for 35 years. Cheers, Bill
  20. Andy, Have your Porsche technician (not parts guy) check his “Porsche Electrical Connector Repair Kit” for the replacement connectors. The entire repair kit is known as CARTOOL – Nr 96 0 000 or PNA 721 043 600. It is full of connectors the parts guy would like to sell you the entire wiring harness for. Bill
  21. Sorry, but my only expeience is with MY02 Targas and MY03 Boxsters. But on both cars, the fog lights only illuminate with the light switch in the (driving) parking or headlight "on" positions. With the light switch in either position, the front fog lights are turned "on" by pulling the switch out one click. The rear fog light is added to the fog light ensemble by pulling the light switch out one more click. In either case, the light switch remains in the selected extended position. By the way, just to eliminate any confusion because of terms, the (driving) parking lights are turned on by turning the light switch one position to the right of "off". The head lights are turned on by turning the light switch two positions to the right of "off". The (parked by the side of the road) parking lights are turned on by pulling out on the light switch and turning it to the left two positions of the "off" position. The light switch does not remain in the pulled out, extended position when selecting the (parked by the side of the road) parking lights. It returns to the un-extended position. It is possible the earlier Boxsters have a different light switch - not to mention other differences....further reason to order a year appropriate owner's manual. Bill
  22. The fog lights only work in conjunction with the light switch in the (driving) parking lights "on" or the headlights "on" switch positions. Further, while driving with the head lights "on", if you select high beams with the fog lights turned "on", the fog lights turn "off" automatically....re-illuminating when the high beams are de-selected. If you are having a problem obtaining an MY97 owner's manual, you can down load an MY03 owner's manual from RennTech. While not completely accurate in all areas, it will will help with switchology questions. Bill
  23. When you turn the light switch one click to the left of "off" the right side parking lights (right side marker and right tail light) will turn "on". Turn the light switch once more to the left and the left side parking lights (left side marker and left rear light) will turn "on". If you do use the fog lights, there will be one of two (dimly illuminated) indicator lights on the left side of the light switch bezel - one indicates the forward fog lights are in use, the second indicates the tail fog light is in use as well. If your car has not been modified by the previous owner(s), there will be only one rear fog light illuminated....the left side for left hand drive cars; the right side for right hand drive cars. I think an owner's manual is around $30.oo from the dealer. There is a lot of good information in the manual....well worth the price. Bill
  24. Jerry, It might be best that you do not continue driving your car if the clutch is slipping. If the clutch lining is worn down to the rivets on the flywheel side of the disk, you'll ruin the surface of the flywheel. And, that will add about $1,000 to your eventual bill to replace the flywhell. FWIW, I just had a clutch replaced on my MY02 Targa. (The RMS and the IMS bearing bolts were updated at the same time.) The bill, after my 15% PCA discount was $1,578. The clutch was replaced because it was getting intolerably heavy - particularly in stop and go traffic. The clutch disk had 54,000 miles on it and had less than a millimeter of lining thickness remaining. Now, the clutch is as light as the Carrera's on the showroom floor. A board member of another Porsche bulletin board has the original clutch in his 213,000 mile Boxster. Obviously, clutch life depends alot on the driver's habits. I attribute the short life of the clutch on my Targa to the original driver's poor driving habits. :D I purchased the car two years ago when it had 45,000 miles on it. Bill
  25. jam, Or, take a look at page 47 in the MY03 Carrera Owner's Manual available here on RennTech. It also says: "If the convertible top is closed or the hardtop is fitted, have this work performed by an authorized Porsche dealer." Wind Deflector: 996.561.125.0301C.........MSRP: $500.87 Bill
