  1. I have an 07 Boxster S with 7500 miles on it. I changed the oil/filter and refilled with 7.75L of oil as the manual said. After waiting about 15 mins, I checked the oil level and the indicator only lit up the first bar above the bottom arrow. I then added the remaining 0.25L, waited another 15 mins and the indicator then show two segments lit, but not up to the top arrow. I really don't feel like buying another liter of oil only to use another 0.25L to reach the top arrow. Since then, the indicator still shows the same level -- have 7900 miles now.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks.

    paul....

  2. Carrera,

I agree with CJ -- I wouldn't go more than 10-12k miles on a [high quality] synthetic oil in any car. I know that MB now recommends 10K mile changes for their AMG motors, so that should be good enough for Porsche engines.

I've qualified the synthetic oil as high quality which means any oil that's on the Approved Oil List, not for example, the Walmart SuperTech stuff that only lasts about 7000 miles as shown in several used oil analyses I've read.

BTW, the PCA tech forum recommends 7500 miles for an oil change interval.

    paul...

  3. The service intervals are 20k miles or 2 YEARS - i suspect you are coming up to the latter, although the date in the ecu might be its build date and not its date of delivery. Contact your dealership and get a service booked, if the oils been in 2 years it needs changing

I have an 05 boxster that's at the 2yr point with 11k miles.

I had the oil changed 2 months ago at the dealer for $285 whopping dollars, and my service light is now on. The dealer said i am due for tire balance: $225, alignment: $285, and brake fluid change $325 or somehting like that...

Do you guys think this is a total waste of time for a car with 11k miles? It drives straight, stops well, and wheels don't wobble...hehe.

I will still have to get the message reset, but let me know what you all think.

I can't comment on the other items (my 07 Box is my first Porsche), but the brake fluid does need to be changed every 2 yrs regardless of mileage. The brake fluid resevoir also handles the clutch.

  4. Perfect for Audio Systems, Extreme Motors, High Compression, Supercharger Systems, Large Cams, Underdirce Pulleys and No Alternators. 6.60'' x 5.20'' x 6.80'' 550 cca (0 degrees)/742ca (32 degrees)/1380ca (80 degrees).

I would find out what 'No Alternators' means. Seems to me this isn't a battery to run a vehicle but to run high end aftermarket accessories.

    fasterjames:

    You right about that.

But motoadv needs to make sure that the batteries he's looking at have at least, the Amp-hour rating I previously posted. Cranking amps tend to be marketing things (although a true cranking amp rating is good for testing). Another option would be to use an AGM technology battery but I don't know what their availability is in Costa Rica. You can mail order those from the US because there's no acid to spill in them. Odessey makes some that are spiral wound -- the quality is pretty good.

    motoadv,

Forget what I told you about Odyssey batteries -- I just looked them up. All their batteries that are around the 10hr rated Ah specification weigh around 60 lbs which is more than what you want.

  6. 987 Triptronic Boxster.

Will any of these batteries work?

    They have enough power?

I use the car twice or once a week.

My intention is loosing some weight on the car, Im installing an AWE exhaust which is 15 pounds lighter, sounds better and claims a few more torque and HP.

So another 30 pounds less with a lightweight battery was my next decission.

    motoadve,

While searching around, I discovered that the battery needs to have a 70Ah rating with at least 340A. Use this as minimum requirements. Good luck.

  7. as the title has it :)

    Would anybody know?

    0.5L or maybe 1L

    Thanks for the help.

    Robert

Looking through the 986 2003 owner's manual on this site, the oil level between the min/max markings is 1.25L. I have a 987 and not a 986 so I can't give you any otehr reliable info. Since you're a CM on this forum, you can download the owner's manual if needed.

  8. Hi guy's I have decided to change my tires on my 07 Boxster and looking for an all season high performance tire that will also do snow and a good comfortable ride probably to much to ask but I would have to figure some one out there may have some good advice and experience with some of the main brands.

What I find is alot of the major brands claim alot but after looking over the reviews its hard to tell which tire is going to give you the hole package.

Oh I forgot I would like a longer lasting tire as well most of the high end sports tire give very little mileage.

So can anyone out there tell me which tire is the all round best sports tire.

    regards

    Warren

    Warren,

I've also been looking around for an "all season" tire for my 07 Box. I'm going with a set of Conti Extreme Contacts. You can get info on these at Tire Rack. I had these tires on my previous car (03 Mercedes E320) and they performed well (I live in Boston, so we get our share of snow). Some things to keep in mind: those tires are slightly noisy due to the tread design, if you do a lot of high speed driving around turns - you'll greatly decrease tread life, you can't drive over 160mph because they're only W rated, you'll need to set your TPMS display for winter tires to account for the tire sizes since they only make the 235 and 255 sizes (I'm assuming you have a Box S).

I also agree with what others have said in that there is no perfect tire that does everything. Tires are indeed a compromise and you need to do a trade-off of your priorities.

Attached a page from the Conti site.

    Regards,

    paul...

  9. Being my first Porsche, I noticed that my 07 987 doesn't have a fuel filter, but the 986 family does. Can anyone shed some light on why they omitted the fuel filter design from these cars? I know that many gas stations have filters on their pumps -- maybe that's the reason.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    paul...

  10. Why are you considering changing to a wider tyre ? I doubt you will get better grip, more likely worse grip in the wet. It may also be difficult to get the correct N rated porsche approved tyres in this size.

Thanks everyone for your help -- you all provided good rationale -- I'll stay with the recommended sizes.

berty: I'm really not considering changing to a wider tire -- just trying to match up a specific brand and available sizes.

    Regards,

    paul...

  11. I'll be sure not to do that, I just want to be sure to keep it topped up not wait until it is 'below' the add mark.

BTW the other reason I like the dip stick is because it allows me to inspect the oil keeping an eye out for contaminents, before they become a problem. It is the blood of the engine and regular inspection can tell a lot about the internal condition of the engine.

The oil filter should trap particles we can see with our eyes. I'd like a dipstick tube so I could draw out oil samples to send to a lab for analysis. Also, don't go with the factory recommended oil change of 20K miles. The max should be 10K miles -- I have a long story to go with this from another car, but I won't discuss it here unless you want to know.

    Regards,

    paul...

  12. Since mine has a dipstick, wanna trade?

Hmmm, let me think awhile on that one?

While I am does anybody know what each of the 3 segments on the OBC display dividing the demarcation between full and add represent?

Perhaps 1/3 of a liter each?

Each segment represents 0.4L (according to the owner's manual).

    Regards,

    paul...

    thanks!

The manual also stresses the point of not overfilling the oil.

    paul...

  13. I have purchased the complete workshop manuals for a small sum of money. I would like to pass on to all readers that the two CD's I received are worth every penny I spent on them. Contact porschelibrarian, a contributing member of this forum, for further information. You won't be disappointed!! :clapping:

    Dale

I also purchased the 987 manual set from him -- totally agree with you!

  14. Does anyone knows if the new one for 2007 willl work on older models too? The lease on my Cayenne expires soon and I will be changing it for the new facelifted one, but my 2005 Boxster will stay with me forever.

Don't know yet -- the Durametric support person told me that they're checking the 07 Boxster ECU. One thing to keep in mind is that the Feds are requiring all cars sold in the US will be CAN-bus compliant starting in 2008, so CAN will be the communications protocol for talking to ECU's for OBD-II info and everything else on cars.

I'm very interested in buying a Durametric tool, so I'll post info as I get it for others.

    Regards,

    paul...

  15. Thanks Paul,

Let me know when you know. I'll buy one then, too.

    Rob

No problem, Rob -- I plan on posting the info here when I get one so others will know. BTW, if you have other cars, this tool won't work on them -- although a basic OBD-II scanner will work on our 07 987's, those can only supply the powerplant codes (P0xxx, P1xxx) which are all emissions related -- the Durametric does much more and even reset the service indicator.

Now that we're talking about it, I may give them a call soon to see how they're doing and check to see if they want any beta testers for their product.

    Regards,

    paul...

  16. Has anyone used the durametric tool on a 2007 Boxster S/ Cayman? The company only lists their tool for vehicles to year 2006. Are the control modules different between the 2006 and 2007 model years? How about where you plug in the cable? Can the 2006 Boxster Duramtric kit be used on the 2007 vehicles?

    Soetekouw,

As Loren recommened, I did that a few months ago and the Durametric rep told me that starting in '07, Porsche was making the diagnostics (OBD-II) protocol to be CAN which is what is mandated on all cars sold in the US starting in 2008.

So to answer your question, the Durametric tool that works on the 2006 987's won't work on the 2007's (it can't communicate). I plan on calling them again in the summer to see how the software development is going as I plan to buy the tester as soon as it's released.

    Regards,

    paul...

  17. Nice! Good luck with it.

Is that Pease in the background? I used to work in one of those hangers in the first pic.

Nope it is McGuire, down in central Jersey. I think I'd rather be at Pease though....

Good luck with your new Box. I thought Pease was shutdown or maybe reduced to only have National Guard functionality.

    Regards,

    paul...
