  1. The common leak in a 944 that you mentioned doesn't actually leak into the rear of the car. The drains under the rain guard at the base of the windshield get clogged than the water begins to rise. Eventually the water reaches the fresh air vents and pours into the climate control system. Your leak is most likely the result of the drains in aether side of the car becoming clogged. You can access them easily by looking for the holes as a friend operates the top.
  2. I'd say $630 in labor is perfectly reasonable. He should also inspect and replace as necessary the clutch and all the usual suspects while he's milling around. That could add another hour or two.
  3. I really hope this is the issue you're dealing with. In my experience the power loss is relatively unnoticeable probably due to the fact that your attention is focused on the annoying sound. Good luck!
  4. In the 996 and 986 compression gasses that are able to get by a loose spark plug will squeak as they are forced past the seals on the coil packs. I know how completely ridiculous this sounds but I've seen it on three completely different cars. The first time it took a full hour with a Boxster on the lift as I scorched my face using a stethoscope all over the bottom of the engine. Check the spark plugs to ensure they're tight. ;)

  6. Check the dipstick and oil filler neck for emulsification. This would be a sign that the moisture has made its way into the engine case and thats ungood. If you don't find any have the cooling system pressure tested and observed for leaks. The part number on your expansion tank cap should end in 01. Is that the case?
  7. Anyone have a before and after? I'm really curious to see how well these polishing kits work.
  8. You just said the magical phrase. "I have noticed my fan sometimes stays on for a while after I shut off my car." Without question the issue is the temperature sensor (996 606 113 00). Once you open the engine compartment look to the right just behind the first intake runner. It plugs into a grommet from the top. If you don't see the sensor (I suspect that you wont) look all the way to the right and down near the exhaust. The sensor is probably dangling in that area hanging by its wires. Put it back in its correct position and you're done.
  9. It's probably the coolant level or the sensor has failed. You may also find that the engine compartment temperature sensor has failed or fallen out of the grommet that secures it to the intake runner. When the sensors come loose they hang down near the exhaust. Once the sensor heats up it lets you know telling you that the engine compartment is overheating.
  10. Unfortunately you'll really need to remove the transmission to replace the mount. The good news is that the transmission is quite easy to remove in a 996. And you'll really need to be careful to press the mount out so you don't crack the case. Another option would be to replace the entire tale cover that includes the integrated mount. Unfortunately that particular part just over $800.
  11. If you had a thud and the mount that was removed looked like that I'd say you found the cause. I'm replacing Boxster mounts at a remarkable rate. I just did two last week that were COMPLETELY separated. I'll post the pix in the morning.
  12. I've replaced many 986 mounts and very few 996 mounts so he's probably correct. How many miles are are on the car?

  15. Unless it was in very good shape it's fairly standard procedure to replace 996 116 087 01 guide sleeve and I'd think yours would be fine. With the low miles you have I'm pretty convinced you have a deeper issue than just a few track events killing a TOB. You could argue that it was just a defective unit but why did the first unit fail? I guess we won't have an answer until the transmission is removed.
  16. Do you still have the work order from the work he did? If so did he replace any of the parts I mentioned?
  17. I just replaced all 6 of mine for kicks. I figured at 140k they deserved to retire.
  18. While it may not be the mechanics fault that the part went bad he is still responsible for its replacement. He could make the argument that the track time hammered the TOB but thats clearly insane. No DE could ever destroy a part that is known to easily last 70k miles. I'm willing to bet he failed to catch the issue that caused the failure in the first place. Under 50k is a bit early for a TOB replacement. Have the next mechanic check (996 116 087 01 guide sleeve, 012 141 751a intermediate piece, and 996 116 712 02 release lever). I'll bet one of these parts are damaged and should have been replaced by the first guy.
  19. i just got mine in and there is a ton of engine noise. When i take it off, there isn't any noise....... Are you sure you have a proper ground connection. I had the same issue but after securing the ground better it sounds clear as a bell.
  20. Will you stick with Porsche? Just out of curiosity why did you sell the car if you loved it?
