  1. Only the earlier boxsters (986 models) have the ability for an AUX interface. The later models use MOST fibre optics so you either buy the porsche aux interface which is useless as the sound level is very low or buy a dension unit. Ther is NO wiring on the back of the head unit of a 987 for an aux input. FM modulator for those that want a cheap option or Dension for those that want something better. No alternatives i'm afraid , its been researched many times and i've even looked at the wiring diagrams its a definite no go.
  2. There is a blank gommet/ plug behind the battery on the right hand side. You can use this to route cables through into the drivers footwell and then onward into the glove box or center console.
  3. Ther are primary and secondary cats in the exhaust i beleive. I know that strosek offer a performance switchable sports exhaust for the cayman/ boxster , there is probaly one for the 997 too.
  4. If the amplifier is seen as faulty this can either be the hardware itself or posibly the MOST fibre optic cable that connects it to the PCM. There are a number of connection points in the front compartment for the MOST fibre optics. These are black plugs on dual orange cables. Do not touch the inside of the plugs as the fibre optics are sensitive to grease and dust. The cables are made of plastic rather than glass fibre so are generally fairly robust, they must not however be kinked. The MOST loop connects the PCM to other devices as a series or daisy chain, hence two cables in every plug. Depending on the options in your particular car you may have up to 4 or even 5 devices on the MOST loop. You can check the status or list of connected devices by pressing the MAIN and TRIP buttons on the PCM display. A list of connected devices is displayed each of which can be further interrogated by selecting it from the list. More advanced diagnostics require the use of the workshop tool PWIS unit. Devices available on the MOST loop are : Amplifier - for Bose only Navigation Drive CD changer Telephone telematics Sirus sat radio MOST is an automotive industry standard , developed in conjuction with Mercedes, BMW , Audi and Harman Becker amongst others. Harman Becker supply the audio equipment for Porsche.
  5. Be a little careful with torrent downloads of the update software. They do not contain any instructions on using the ISO imges , if the file is corrupt you can turn the PCM into a brick. There is no reset for the PCM if the software update is corrupted or fails , even your porsche agent cannot help. The update will only allow your PCM to overcome compatability isues with aftermarket devices such as the mobridge , and the ability to use newer maps than 2004. There is a lot of fiction about the update enabling Mp3 playback, this is rubbish , it doesn't as the hardware in the PCM doesnt support Mp3 playback on pre MY 2006 cars.
  6. The DME is the generic term for the engine management control unit. This is the control unit that controls the engine and also received inputs from the Sport / PASM/ PSE buttons on the center console. The DME activates the PSE as a result of the PSE or Sport button being pressed if the car is specced with the system.
  7. I opted for the dension. They have also been great for after sales suport, even outside of the warranty period. I went for the desnion so I could play my music from a USB stick, therefore no need to lug an i pod around or have issues with leaving it in the car. The USB stick supports playlists and album, artist and folder search functions as well as a full track list. The dension as you would expect also includes support for add on interfaces for bluetooth phone connections. It comes bundled with both USB, phono and I pod interface cables and can be installed in less than an hour without the need for any special tools. It also allows for the original CD changer to be retained , so with simple flick of a switch the car returns to porsche spec for servicing or if you wish to play CD's other than from the single slot in the PCM. Add on the multi function steering wheel and music selection becomes a dream.

  9. Press and hold buttons 1 4 8 to reset the PCM. Pulling the fuse will reset the navigation drive. May be simpler to disconnect the battery. Just remember to reset the power windows and the steering angle sensor afterwards. Your description sounds like you may have an issue with the map DVD or the GPS antennae. Check the connection of the gps antennae to the cable just above the cabin filter in the engine bay on the left hand side of the battery. You could also try cleaning the map DVD with a soft cloth and using a DVD lense cleaner in the navigation drive. If the car is 2005 its probably running an older 2004 map DVD and original PCM software too.
  10. You were lucky to find a clear stretch of autobahn without roadworks or a pegged speed limit. At those speeds you can really feel the benefits of PASM or sport suspension , the car is a lot more planted and responds better to steering input , particularly on bends. You also realise the benfits of good brakes as within seconds the speedo can read 130 kmph as a result of slower traffic pulling out.
  11. The return springs (that make the system loud) on the PSE are not very strong as the vacuum to close the valves is taken from the inlet manifold and therefore not great at tickover or low RPM. The PSE system uses the same actuator solenoid type for the PSE as it does for the variocam. As far as im aware failure of these solenoids is rare. A fractured air line will result in a loud rather than quiet setting so you can rule this out. There are two actuators on the silencers, one for each side, you should be able to see / hear the flaps move by looking at the pivot pin of the flap from under the rear of the car. If you use a permanent marker to put a line across the pin when the engine is switched off and exhaust is cold , its easy to see if both flaps are moving when the PSE is activated. I have fitted an auxilliary button to control the PSE independantly of the sport/pse button on the dash. This allows the PSE to remain in loud mode regardless of road speed and ensures there is no need to reset the PSE each time the car is started. The PSE can be returned to quiet mode by a simple press of the overide switch. I posted a thread on the subject elsewhere.
  12. In contrast I can only sing the praises of the customer support from Dension. My unit was out of warranty and they were incredibly helpful resolving the issue. Telephone and e mail communication was excellent and my case was escalated to the technical division at the factory very quickly. The dension product compares similarly to the nav tv and mobridge units in terms of cost. The unit is constantly being developed with software updates and enhancements being a free download. The unit will play from an I pod , USB or AUX device and will control playlists and track selection from the PCM / CDR if connected to a USB stick or i pod. The sound quality is superb and there is optional connectivity to phones via bluetooth. For the cayenne owner there is now a visual interface add on facility for the pcm 2.1.
  13. Make sure that the navigation drive matches the model year of your car and PCM. You may also need to buy a new map update and update discs from porsche as part of the bundle if not buying the retro fit kit. This is sometimes required to update the navigation unit and PCM to the latest software so it can use the newer map.
  14. The key thing to consider when upgrading the audio unit is that the PCM 2.1 is now outdated and maps cost a fortune compared to aftermarket systems from pioneer and kenwood. An OEM finsih can be achieved thanks to aftermarket fascias / surrounds for the kenwood/ pioneer head units. The PCM 2.1 needs to be matched to the navigation drive in terms of hardware level , so if they are sourced from different sources they may not function correctly. Also to bear in mind , there are two types of PCM depending on whether the car is also equipped with BOSE amp/ speakers. I've helped many trying to retro fit the OEM PCM so know what is involved , i would advise fitting aftermarket rather than OEM , especially if you are looking for a quick install and a cheaper option. Fitting OEM will cost upwards of 1000 USD even if you can find the key parts second hand. Even after the install , the system will still be second rate compared to a factory fit OEM as the diversity antennae will not be available. if you wanted to replicete the PCM 2.1 and navigation system completely as per porsche install i would estimate a cost upwards of 3000 USD before labour. This would result in navigation unit running the latest available maps from Porsche which are 2007 . There are no options to buy maps direct from Navteq or teleatlas so its dealer prices or a second hand disc from e bay. Either way you wont find a newer map than 2007.
  15. There is a thread on boxa.net discussing this. The luggage racks only fit the 986, i'm not aware of any for the 987. You can buy tailored luggage from e bay from roadsterbag , these fit perfectly and maximise luggage capacity.
  16. My car is now 5 years old. It too lost the refrigerant due to a leak. The leak was traced to a punctured hose from the compressor in the engine bay. There is a design flaw in the hose routing as the hoses sit against the rear bulkhead before passing under the car. Where the hoses sit against the bulkhead they rub against the screws that secure the sound deadening. As a result the rubber wears eventually holeing the hose. Hoses are not covered under warranty - extended or otherwise so its worth checking.
  17. If you do not intend to keep any of the standard speakers or amps (if fitted) then there are plenty of options. I would suggest searching the electronics section of caymanclub.net planetporsche.net for ideas. a double din kenwood or pioneer sat nav will drop in and there are OEM or aftermarket fascia surrounds to make the finish look standard. The 987 uses the MOST fibre optics to control amplifers when the BOSE sound option is specified , otherwise the amplifier is driven from the speaker outputs if the sound packet plus has been specified. The BOSE system also uses different impeadnace for the speakers and subwoofer so retro fitting a new head unit requires a little more work.
  18. As far as im aware the european light has a facility for left or right hand driving by virtue of a tag internal to the unit. I know that the bulb types used in the USA are also different to European models so it would be worth checking the parts manual for both north american and european cars as to the bulb part numbers for hi beam and turn signal. I am not aware of the wiring loom being different. Porsche standardise on parts where possible so the advent of two part numbers for a xenon headlight unit suggests there may be some more subtle differences. The beam pattern should be the same on NA and Europen xenons though there may be some adjustment required. I have a set of LHD european HID headlamps that are nearly new if you are interested drop me a PM.
  19. Its easier to refit the tang from the vent than to replace the vent. I have replaced a vent and its a real pain to do. There are 4 tag springs inside the vent that need to be levered up to allow the vent to be released from the dash. Two require a lever from the front of the vent and two require a lever from the rear. I struggled for two hours to ge the vent out , after the vent was removed the slider was almost destroyed as I needed two pairs of screwdrivers and some bespoke levers to lift the clips on the vent. I've some pictures of the vent if anyone is interested , the problem is that the access to the clips is very difficult especially from the front.
  20. I think its a carbon filter fitted to the fuel tank for US legislation. Not found on European cars except the Gt3.
  21. I have a 987 3.2 S. The sport exhaust wiring is almost identical on the 987 to the 997 , the only difference being the control solenoid position and its wiring route. Retro fitting the control wiring and getting the rear ECU (DME) to control it can be done by the home enthusiast , but requires coding using the porsche PWIS workshop tool. A durametric device doesnt have this capability. The official wiring loom from porsche is expensive if the car doesn't already have sport chrono , but a manual pushbutton switch can be installed as a simpler and more direct control. This overcomes the issues with the factory setting adjusting the PSE back to quiet mode between 20 and 40 mph.
  22. There are no p2p download options. The PCM 2.1 and 2.0 use navteq map data but the DVD/ CD's are coded by Porsche. There is no point in having speed camera databases as there is no way of updating the PCM map other than a new disc. Porsche will never allow the end user to download map data updates in case of software errors / claims and the encryption would be open to attack. If you are looking for a flexible navigation system with Mp3 capability and bluetooth, better to get a pioneer or kenwood aftermarket unit. Stand alaone speed camera GPS units or detectors are likely to be cheaper than having the info on a database. Not all european countries allow speed camera detectors or warning devices, this is probably why there are few if no OEM car manufacturers that include speed camera databases on their navigation systems. If you have a PM fitted in your car you have the option of sticking with porsche or ripping it out. There are no backdoor or alternative routes to updating the PCM mapping data.
  23. Don't forget to add in the cost of renting a vehicle , this adds to the basic premium. I would imagine the Leipzig course has all the surfaces that silverstone has , along with a very impressive test track / circuit. Silverstone has a short but interesting circuit, though I beleive its also possible to drive the main race cuircuit. The handling sections such as the kick plate , ice hill and low friction curves add to the driver training element. Details are available on line from the porsche website or in the travel/ tour brochure from your local OPC.
  24. The latest map is 08.2007 , though the map data is actually the same as the 05.2007 disc. The map update is sold with the PCM software update so that early vehicles can update from 2004 to 2007 directly as this requires newer PCM software. The software on your PCM is already at its latest level , so the update CD's in the pack would not be used. You cannot order just the map update on its own , you must order the update kit. The map update is the same price as the kit so there is no cost benefit anyway, it costs over 350 pounds. If you have a 2005 map DVD the 2007 map update will give you revisions on road changes up to October 2006 (the 2007 map update uses 2006 data). Unless you do a lot of driving using the navigation, updating to the 2007 map is probably not worth your while. Sounds like the dealer is trying to shift stock of map DVD's. Porsche are very poor at announcing when new map updates are available, even customer support in Reading have no information and somewhat rely on feedback from the dealers and parts departments.
  25. Why did the dealer tell you your car needed an update ? If your car is running a 2004 vintage map DVD with a PCM2.1 , there is a software update that can be applied to allow a newer map (2005 or later) to be used. If the car is running a 2005 or newer map DVD, the only software update available is for the navigation drive. I have had all versions of the map in my 987 from 2004 to 2007 and the latest navigation software too. I cannot say I have noticed any significant difference in performance or detail as each version of update has been installed. The main step forward is migrating from the 2004 map to the 2005 and newer ones , as TMC (traffic messaging) is only available for the UK on the 2005 or newer maps . The latest 2007 map actually runs on the same version of software as the 2006 map , so its no benefit from a software perspective to update to 2007 from 2006. The only benefit to newer maps are the obvious corrections to new roads and layouts etc. Unless your car is running a 2004 map DVD and you are looking to install the extended navigation , log book functions or a newer map , you do not need to update your PCM software.
