  1. The connection for the antennae is under the windscreen cowl just above where the air filter for the cabin sits. If the car has been recently serviced it could have been dislodged and be giving an intermittent connection. The other end of the cable goes into the back of the navigation DVD drive , thats the black box in the front trunk , not the PCM unit in the center console.
  2. I beleive it was in the boxster forum a 2007 2.7 unit failed.
  3. Regards the 30k mileage phenomenon , bearings normally fail randomly unless they are subjected to poor lubrication , excessive load or temperature. 30 k miles is what I would term infant mortality for this bearing , suggesting its either a defect in manufacture , or as the article suggests , some other change in the bearing service conditions. A high number of the vehilces seen with this failure are low mileage cars that are 3-6 years old. This suggests either infrequent use or short journeys , and on some of the older cars maybe even non specified oils. Not all M96 engines fail , so there must be some mitigating circumstances that cause these failures. To date this seems to be the most logical and well thought out explanation i've seen.
  4. A good post and pleased to see some technical assesment has gone into understanding the failures before the redesign. One question however about the oil viscosity. Is the suggestion to move from 0-40 mobil 1 to 5-40 or 0-40 to 0-50 ? What range is the higher viscosity beneficial ? Bearing in mind that the oil also lubricates the hydraulic tappets and is the motive force behind the variocam i would be a little nervous about moving too far away from the porsche reccomended oils list. Certainly the suggestion to remove the cover from the bearing and ensuring that the oil isnt left too long before changing seems to make sound sense. I have also heard from other sources that infrequent or short trip use can degrade the oil quicker than daily use. The suggestion from this other source was 10k intervals for oil changes , especially if the car isnt being warmed up fully or driven for short trips. Personally I think I will opt for the more frequent oil changes and consider a slightly different spec oil. I have already had the intermediate shaft cover replaced with a new clutch at 20k miles as it was weeping. Advice on the oil spec appreciated... thanks
  5. The PSE unit from porsche comes as a kit and retails for about 1200 Uk pounds. I picked mine up from e bay for 150 pounds...It was removed from a 2007 Cayman last year so its only seen a years use at most. I think you should be able to sell a used PSE in good condition for close to 400 pounds, I guess I was just lucky.

  7. The two main warranty alternatives in the UK are Warranty Direct and Tesco. I went with warranty direct as they allow for monthly premiums , so if you sell the car you can either sell on the warranty or cancel it. Warranty direct have been great , they paid in full (minus the 25 pound excess) to have my car repaired in a Porsche dealership whilst I was touring on holiday last summer.
  8. Not sure who you are dealing with but the accepted experts in this field are REAP automotive based in England. They manufactured the original gauge faces for porsche for the 993 and 964. They offer replacement faces and a fitting service for all porsche models. Since you are in the netherlands you may also be interested in fitting the additional security standard to models in your country. The USA spec car will not have the M536 options of a battery backed siren or tilt sensor fitted as standard to Netherlands and Uk spec vehicles.   9. Ive recently bought a used PSE and plan to fit it to my 987S 2005 MY. Having looked at the differences between the 3.4 engine and 3.2 I beleive that it can still be installed. The differences between 2007 model boxster / cayman and the previous units , seem to focus on the wiring for the PSE being plug and play. The 997 shares the same rear DME as the boxster and this does have the capability to control the PSE , the TSB suggesting that wiring can be spliced to control it. I know that the PSE has been fitted to a 3.2S in the UK with full controls , as I spoke with both the Porsche dealer that did the work and the owner of the car. I plan on fitting the exhaust and prepping the wiring myself before taking the car to an OPC to have the rear DME coded and the wiring finished off. I am as yet undecided if I will also add the facility to run the PSE independantly of the normal software so that it can remain on all the time. I will post up pics of the install as I progress over the next few weeks.
  10. Having read the fitting instructions and now purchased a set of used mufflers I can see how the system works. As Loren stated previously , the vacuum from the inlet manifold pulls the sprung loaded valves closed , thats why the exhaust is in loud mode when you initially start up. I'm still undecided if I will install exactly as per OEM or leave an option to control the valves manually by a switch. Either way , i'm looking forward to fitting this system as an enhancement.
  11. I plan on writing the letter to Porsche in the next week or so. Unfortunately the response to the poll has been a little slow, and though the figures do show unanimous signs of frustration with the release of updates , the weight of numbers is not significant. I will keep you all posted with progress
  12. You mean vacuum closes the valves ? Surely this would mean the car starts with the PSE open and in loud mode ? Sounds a little backward in control terms but i will take your word for it.
  13. Yes they are , but a budget version for the mainstream manufacturers. The aftermarket options are better materials , hence the longer warranty period.
  14. If you have a 997 it will use a DVD rather than CD for the navigation. The DVD drive sits in the front luggage compartment. If you want to check the version of PCM press the MAIN and TRIP buttons at the same time. This will reveal a menu with all the software versions etc. If the car was registered after 2005 then it will prpbably not require any updates to be able to use newer map DVD's. If it is a 2004 or 2005 model year it is possible it will require a software/ firmware update. Post the details back on the thread and i'll see If I can help further. I'm not sure what you mean about the previous owner updating. Please can you explain a little more ?
  15. I thought the vacuum lines provided the suction to open the dampers ? For anyone interested Capistro offer a controller box for their exhaust. I beleive the exhaust is make by strosek in germany and like the porsche PSE has vacuum valves to open the bypass. I know of a guy in the Uk that had the full PSE fitted to his 2005 Boxster S , though it was already equipped with the sport chrono. The vacuum tapping points and plugs for the control module are not present in the pre 2007 model boxsters though I beleive a skilled porsche technician can wire back directly to the rear DME.
  16. Have you considered having the existing wheel recovered instead. Alan Gunn (based in the USA) has an e bay shop offering retrims and bespoke mods to steering wheels. In the UK K baggs trimming or similar can do the work. Certainly a lot cheaper than the porsche item which I would guess is about 1000 USD. I believe there was a thread on here a few months ago with a picture of virtually every wheel option. The multi function wheel comes with a soft leather trim as standard , all the original multi function wheels I've seen are about another 0.5 - 1 cm in girth compared to the standard wheel. The XPA wheels are closer to 1.5 cm extra girth. The overall wheel diameter doesnt change , the padding just gets thicker making it look smaller.
  17. We use fine metal pleated mesh filters at work for protecting pump internals on CIP systems. In the main they work well and do allow for re use , but not on an indefinite timeline. For most automotive uses where the filter may be changed 8- 10 times in the life of the engine (assuming a 20k service interval) I would suggest the material may be durable for a number of services. I think its important to be aware that the media will fatigue or become increasingly difficlut to clean as metal shards , degrading gaskets etc start to build up and become snagged in the media. Some form of forced backflushing or ultrasonic clean is generally the best method of cleaning. The filters i've seen also have a tendency to delaminate from the housing / end cap after prolonged extended use.
  18. Hi Paul, No worries. As to the re useable filter, I think you may need an ultrasonic bath to properly clean it. Certainly i would be uneasy about leaving it in any length of time without a thorough clean. Personally i'd rather throw the old filter away with the debris than have a re useable one.
  19. Hi, First of all you do not need a PCM update to run the dension unit, AP997S had a very early version of PCM 2.1 running a dension unit for a number of years. As to the software update , your dealer is correct, this is only supplied as part of a MAP update package. The software level 3 is designed to only work with map DVD's which are release date 05.2005 or later. The dealer is suspicious because you have a 04.2005 DVD but the car has not been updated to level 3 software. This suggests that the map was not purchased via aporsche agent as they carry out the update as part of the purchase cost. A 2005 or later map DVD will not work in a pcm 2.1 with a software level below version 3. You have two options to resolve this issue: 1. Buy a 2008 map update (be aware the maps are actually 2007!) from your OPC and have the PCM updated 2. Find a forum member with the update discs that can loan them to you, to update the PCM yourself. Unless the car was purchased from an OPC I doubt you will get them to update the PCM for you.
  20. LED units typically run much lower power and resistance to conventional items. As a result I would expect both the front and rear control units to be different items on LED equipped cars. This would be the only way to prevent bulb failure warnings and errors as seen when fitting LED bulbs to a 987 Series 1. You could start by checking the 2008 parts listing for a 997 Gen 1 and Gen2 for the front and rear control unit.
  21. I think porsche made the 987 to comply with EU standard 4 emissions. The new cars need to comply with even tighter emissions of level 5. Personally I would seek out a performance exhaust with 100 or 200 cell performance cats and if possible retain the dual set up in both sides. If your car does not comply with the stated emissions you may be foreced to refit your old exhaust or buy a new one form Porsche !! From what i've read so far on forums and tech pages its the primary cats that offer the biggest gains to being converted to performance items. The secondary cats and silencers offer little gain from being replaced with "performance " items. The boxster S already utilises a gas flowed exhaust manifold to improve performance , I'm not sure this can be much improved on, but are generally an integral part of the primary cats , hence replaced as a single item.
  22. You may want to do a search on the subject of filter replacements. I've yet to any convincing power gains or 0-60 / max speed increases as a result of fitting a performance air filter. Personally I think its the automotive equivalent of snake oil. The 987 has a much improved filter media area and therefore lower resistance than that of the earlier 986. Its the same media and intake snorkel on all 987 models up to and including the 303 hp Rs60 / Cayman sport. The restriction or differences in the intake system between models is the resonance manifold and throttle body, not the paper element. Suggests to me there is no need to upgrade or replace the air filter element. Paper works very well , I see no need to change it , just replace earlier if you live in a dry or dusty environment.
  23. Ah yes, sorry about that I can now see where you are looking at. The part number 997 642 139 02 is for the earlier chassis numbers and the 997 642 159 00 is for the later ones. Check your chassis number against the details , this should steer you in the right direction. If you are intent no an OEM look then you will need a vertical mount unit appropriate to the PCM and chassis number of your car. Otherwise I think the horizontal unit from the cayenned will wor if you can fix it horizontally.
  24. I have seen a couple of IMS failure posts on 2006 > cayman engines , so though it may have reduced the risk , I still do not think its completely cured.
  25. Hi Mark, This has been discussed a number of times, to be honest i would not bother with an indution kit . If you look at the PET catalogue you can see the 3.4 L cayman / boxster with 303 Hp uses the same instake as the 3.2 987S. The differences come in the induction manifold and throttle body.
