  1. Well, last month due to financial pressures, I sold my C4 Cab. I got a terrible price for it here in sunny (and cold) Spain but needs must! Silver Lining? I am now the proud owner of a nearly new black Golf R32 (250bhp, 3.2 V6 - €22,000). This car is far more chuckable than 911, has a better dash (cool blue illumination) and even sounds better from the rear centrally-mounted twin pipes. It looks nothing like the slower 2.0T GTI either, so happy days. To anyone in same financial predicament I would recommend this motor. Oh, it's also all wheel driive and with five doors and easy clutch even the wife likes it!! B)
  2. Just had 40K Km major service. Including alignment/tracking adjustments, total bill incl Tax came to €900 or £720 or $1,440. (at today's exchange rates). Does this sound reasonable? Car was washed and ready by 4pm having been dropped off at 9.30am. If service had been done 3 months ago, €900 would have equated to £616 and $1,232. That's the credit crunch/world economy for you!!
  3. An update for you: had a wee one to one with a rosso red F430 spyder this afternoon on the mountain road up to my village. Tanked his *** B) easy peasy. He simply could not keep up on the bends. My car also had 6mm of dirt all over it so made overtaking him all the pleasurable........... Hasta la vista baby!
  4. I've had my cab two years now. In the last 6 months or so I have eased my max speed upwards on the toll road which is not used by locals and quite frankly lane discipline is much higher!! I now cruise, where apropriate, at around 240/250 kph. That said I am not happy with the stability of the car at this speed and only "touch" this speed for a second or two prefering to sit at around 180/190kph. What is more annoying is the number of fast Audis that scream past at circa 280kph seemingly undetered at their high velocity. I understand the reasons for this and have gone away and purcahsed a nearly new RS4. I keep my 996 for the excellent Andalucian country roads now. B)
  5. There will be a lot of Scottish drivers with standard 18"(996)/19"(997) N4 Pirellis scratching their heads at this topic. We all know thay take time to warm up in the cold so we drive conservatively until then. For my sins, I live in Spain in the mountains but having lived the majority of my driving life in Scotland. The Pirellis are fine once warmed up. Driving in snow is of course another matter!!
  6. Has anyone out there ever done this? I think it may be a good idea as I live in a mountainous area and sometimes feel even after the engine has reached normal operating WATER temp (82C?), that the engine is still cold. I refer particularly to what BMW do with the M5's rev counter/oil temp indicator bars etc..... In short, I would rather know if the engine needs a bit more casual driving before I boot it esp at this time of year/first thing in the morning.
  7. Congrats on your purchase. I've got same wheels and they look brill' Re your first question: I only say "may" but it may be your clutch on its last legs. Get it checked out if you find you have to deal in a lot of revs on hill starts etc... Happy driving B)
  8. All of a sudden my sim card tray will not stay locked into facia. Phone now inoperative. Dealership want to take out whole fascia to fix problem which will be expensive. Any thoughts? I believe the fault was caused when a small spring/pin within the mechanism has dislodged and flown into the dark recesses of the car.
  9. Re ashtray, get a nice shiny blue Motorola KXR. It fits snuggly into open tray. 997 tray is half width for some reason and so my phone won't fit.. much to the disappointment of my local dealer when I went for test drive the other day B)
  10. Is it a two seater like the GT3 or 2+2 per the TT? The former, yeh?
  11. Listen to me: You need a new clutch. I had the same problem and got mine replaced last week and I had only 28,000Km on the clock (it was previously a demonstrator!!). What a difference and very nice bill of only 900€ (which is £600 or due to the week US dollar an amazing €300 including tax!!) As the clutch is hydraulic you will not notice that the pedal gets stiffer and stiffer over time it's just too subtle but I bet if you go on holiday and come back you'll notice the effort required to depress the clutch the first few times until your leg gets used to it again. With my new clutch the pedal travel is back to normal/effortless and stop/start motoring is no longer a hassle esp in this heat!! It's like having a new car. It also feels faster as the clutch is just so much easier to use. If you leave it too long you may damage the flywheel which is very costly.
  12. At its recent annual service the technician stated that my clutch had less than 2,000Km life on it. The car has covered 28,000Km (17,500 miles) so far albeit I bought it last Jan with 15,500Km showing. The car also has a relatively high oil consumption e.g. 1 Litre Mobil per 1,000KM (625 miles). I am told this is just within Porsche tolerances and am quite relaxed about this as all 911 engines would seem to be "individuals"!! Are the above oil/clutch factors linked?? Appreciate any considered comments. PS I love my car especially with its new Italian rubber!! :D
  13. Ziff, Any chance you could tell me more/go into more detail on relevant differences apart from obvious statistics of course!! :D i.e. is it as much of a daily driver etc, etc... How much worse is fuel consumption, does it ride harder etc..
  14. As a comparison, my dad has a standard Merc 350 SLK, which I have driven many times in Scotland. It rides way harder than my car which of course is on 18" wheels with sports suspension. Go figure :D In short, if in doubt change the rubber not the wheels.
  15. Mike, My car IS a daily driver and the roads here in Spain vary from utter cr*p to pristine tollroad/(no cops) auto routes :D I have just changed the tyres (Pirelli: 2x€400) on my 18" wheels at the business end and must say what a diference a new set of rear rubber feels. The car rides so much better! The fronts have about 5K km life left on them which is now making the car understeer on "commited" corners so they will go soon. The car will feel even greater then. In short, 18" wheels can deal with the school run no problema in my humble opinion. I have had the car 17 months now. ENJOY B)
  16. Guys, I have noticed that if I let the petrol gauge go below last quarter line I encounter problems. i.e. I was on red warning light with about 42Kms left of juice. I re-fueled putting in half-tank worth of petrol. The gauge did not move and read "red". Dash still suggested 42Kms left also. I went back next day and filled tank to brim. Gauge went back to registering Full "4/4". Is this common on 996?
  17. Appreciate all the comments guys, but both dealer and I know that warranty is about to expire within days... The car was bought second hand from dealership and I was given lesser "garage" warranty from their second hand dept., (rather than Porchse manufacturer's) for 12 months. Still would like to know if there is indeed an official Porsche oil consumption limit for the 996 3.6 engine?
  18. Right, had car for 12 months now and oil consumption "settled down" to 750ml per 1,000Km. Current mileage is 25,500 Km. Garage are saying this consumption is high BUT within Porsche limits. They are aware I drive the car hard. Is there in fact an official Porsche guideline/range etc for acceptable oil consumption....?? Mechanic confirmed no leaks evident from underneath ramp inspection and told me any combustion problems would appear with red light on dashboard (!?) when I mentioned phrases such as porous cylinder liner & faulty oil separator... Any thoughts ladies and gentlemen, would be greatly appreciated, as I am thinking of selling and getting me an 'RS4!!?
  19. Cheers thanks. I need a new set of rubber anyway so will get tyre lads to do full tracking. Currently using 750ml of Mobil oil for every 1,000Kms, albeit hard driving in Spanish climate. Garage says this is high consumption BUT not above Porsche accepted limits. Comments anyone?
