  1. This has happened for the third time now. A metallic sounding noise that sounds like things brushing against each other, high pitched, "rotating melody" as the wheel rotates. It was there for a few minutes from what sounds like the driver's side (Australian) rear wheel. It was louder at slow speeds. It went away abruptly when I stopped and put the car in reverse. This was a few days ago. Today, I heard the same noise after 15 minutes of driving, but in the passenger side rear wheel. It then went away after I stopped and started the car few times. I thought this might be brake related, but on both sides at the same time? Anyone with similar experiences?
  2. I have the same problem. Any idea how to get at that switch Loren? Open up the door from the trim side seems like the only way to go.
  3. I have been thinking about installing a garage door opener and a footwell light switch to the my 97 tip. But the Porsche OEM dash switches are so expensive ($50 a piece for a switch). Are there any generic switches or switches from other car manufacturers that would fit the shape of OEM switch in the dash? (both the straight or slanted types)
  4. I seriously doubt it... The Boxster uses a paper filter inside a hard plastic casing with a threaded outside section. A "normal" oil filter essentially uses a metal thread on the centre section right at the middle to secure the filter. Therefore on a normal filter, when you grab the outside you're getting a lot more torque on to the centre section threads, which have smaller threads, and is far more rigid... On the Boxster you get virtually no help, and the thicker threads are a lot tighter. On my Boxster is was impossible to use my hand - I had to use a tool. However, I'm not sure if maybe it's looser on other Boxsters, but I doubt it. Also, you might be a 300lb body-builder with extreme strength, so you might not have a problem using your hands ;) I used to use my hands on every other car with a normal filter and had no problems either - but, as I said, the Boxster was impossible! Thanks! Shash Hmm... so all I need is another 150lb of muscle.... I better get started right away or the oil change is never going to happen :)
  5. I am yet to attempt an oil change on the Boxster myself. This would be in a couple of days. But on my other cars, I just wrap a piece of sand paper around my hand and grab and twist the oil filter that way. Works very well every time. Wonder if that would be the case with the Boxster too.
  6. Well, I do, now. Just got them today. 1st impression after 20km: so smooth, so quiet........ kicks Pirelli P Zero arse hands down so far.
  7. My rear pirellis finally gave up the ghost. Just as well, I wasn't impressed with them at all. I heard good things about Eagle F1 GD03 but they are not available in 255/40/17 in Australia. The next in line is Revspec RS02, apparently superceding the F1s. Anyone have any 1st or 2nd hand experience with these?
  8. I had my tip rebuilt by an Euro auto trans specialist. I floated the idea of a 3.4L transplant. They said that all the tips are very similar. They are all made by ZF. And that from the look of things, there aren't much differences between the Carrera tips and Boxster tips that they could see. Their opinion is that the tip would stand up to the 3.4L. I have read articles in magzines about a 3.4 transplant to a 1997 tip Boxster. The work was done by a Sydney company. I have emailed them and they said that the transmission was holding up to the power 1 year on and going. They did elude to an upgrade part sourced from a US company for strengthening the tip which they used in the build but they were of the opinion that it didn't really add anything to its strength. I think I will be going for the 3.4L engine. The only problem I could think off is the tiptronic transmission . Do you guys think it will be a problem with my transmission. Will it fit the new engine or not. I think cost of having my engine rebuilt will be vary close to upgrading my engine 3.4L and this is why I am doing it. I really don’t want to spend much money on the car cause I am buying a 996 4s or Merc CL55 ( I don’t now yet) So I want to do the swap with the least $$$$.

  10. Well done. Do you have any pictures of the install process? And how much are you charging for the original TPC setup? Was there any issues with overheating and detonation at high RPMs with the TPC?
  11. It could be your ABS or speed sensors. Is there an ABS warning light? Spoiler warning light? Any error codes?
  12. Since my owner's manual pouch was stolen, I've lost all records of dealer services. So I figure I will just start servicing the car myself now since the advantage of retaining resale value via dealer service can no longer be had due to lack of evidence. But the dilemma is that I don't have the factory recommended schedule and lists of what needs be done & when. Is there anything online or does anyone have a scanned copy of the maintenance schedule and details what actually needs to be replaced/inspected at every service type (major, minor, etc)?
  13. Disconnect the battery, try jump starting using your other car. If it works, then your battery is toast. If not, take it to your dealer or an auto electrician.
  14. TP, those shark gill vents you posted look interesting. Is this a body kit mod? Fiberglass and repaint?
  15. My Boxstered was burgled yesterday. The thief took my PDA, a garage door opener, a digital camera and the Boxster User Manuals!! Naturally my anger cannot be adequately expressed in socially acceptable phrases. The immediate problem is that I took out the factory radio last week, now I don't have the security code to restore it. Is there a way to get this from Porsche or Becker or is it a lost cause? Also, the stolen maintenance manuals would mean the car would be harder to sell in the future... I can't imagine it being any good to the person who took it, unless he also drives a Boxster - unlikely given the demography of Boxster owners. This really pisses me off. Just need to vent. I will keep an eye out. If anyone sees Boxster manuals for sale from anywhere in Australia on Ebay or something, please alert me - could be the thief trying to sell.
  16. Thanks for the tips guys. The trays came out quite easily once I knew there's nothing holding them back. The install is almost finished. Here's a pic.
  17. Thanks TP. I pulled with more confidence and out it came just like that. The whole PPC install is almost complete after 1 day.
  18. I am currently in the process of installing a PPC into my Boxster. So the AC needs to be relocated to where the lower storage tray is. I don't seem to be able to pull out the trays easily despite warping the plastic quite extensively as I pulled. Is there anything holding them/it in beside clips? What's the trick to getting the tray out?
  19. I have the stock CR210 head unit in my 97 Tip. Currently looking at upgrading it to something that has a Aux-in but I want to keep the stock look. I know about the CR220 but if I am going to spend, I might as well buy something with a bit more features. So I have been looking at the Traffic Pro 4730. Does anyone know whether the Becker Traffic Pro 4730 has a useable Aux-in connection?
  20. What's amazing is that this guy still manages 96% +ve feedback. Similar scams are everywhere on Ebay. Typically boxes with nothing but a pair of wires and some resistors in them that claim to be a engine management computer mod.
  21. Yes. Can you post a pic or two of the drop links and the main bar bushings (mounts)? I still think your mechanic meant the main bar bushings. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry about the lateness of reply, Loren. I just had a chance to get the car up and get under it today. Here are the pics: Australian passenger side (US driver side): Australian driver side (US passenger side): I suspect the broken rubber bushing on the (OZ) driver's side is what my mechanic may have been talking about. Although does a broken bush in itself really cause trouble? I thought it only acts as a dust cap to the joint. I tried to axially twist the drop links today - neither would move. The difference between today and the last time I tried it was that I only jacked up the car on one side today - both wheels are still touching ground. Wheels were off the ground when the drop links could be twisted axially by hand last time. Also, the (OZ) driver's side drop link looks a bit bent towards the sway bar end. Could that be causing any problems in my suspension? Is the function of the drop link to send force up/downwards?
  22. Nice work. Perry, are you running a carputer setup with a touchscreen? I will be very interested to know your configuration as I am currently deciding which hardware to go with myself.
  23. It's true. Certain codes such as the ABS subsystem, can only be read with a PST2.
