  1. Danny, my plan was to buy a set of cheap chrome HID headlight assemblies like those Civic or BMW units on Ebay and cut and "paste" the projector parts of of the assembly into a empty Boxster headlight unit. I imagine the parts would need to be small to fit. Your fitment seems very good. Care to shed some light on which parts you used? Thanks.
  2. I have a trashed light. I will give it a go when I get a chance. I have been wanting some different looking lights for a while, without going down the standard Litronic route. That pic looks very interesting, TP. I like what he has done. Do you know what sort of projector setup he put in there? If I am going to go thru the whole oven thing, I might as well experiment with putting something new together.
  3. And I am still wearing the same shoes when the prof first changed his motor. :) Good luck with the install, Todd. You know we will all be asking for a "how to" PDF at some point! :)
  4. Thanks a lot, Richard. Will check out the control unit when I get a chance.
  5. Just got these installed after my driver side front Bilstein gave up the ghost. Initial impression: geez, they are firm. Have to take speed humps a lot slower now. Cornering is definitely more sure footed. Although the whole exercise included changing the coilovers, replacing a slightly bent drop link, adding some better front tyres, and a wheel alignment. So I don't know how much impact each contributes to the cornering. Will test out the new setup more in the coming weeks.
  6. Is it possible to retrofit the alarm/remote unit to a MY97? The alarm was optional on Aust cars and mine wasn't fitted with one.
  7. The tip is made by ZF. They use progressively larger/stronger tips denoted by increasing model numbers for handling increased power. The ZF tip desination for the 986 and 996 are the same. The same unit is also used in the early Audi TT, Passat and some Audi V8s. The Boxster S tip does use a "version two" of the same model number/design, possibly related to different gearing ratios to better handle the power.
  8. I'm curious, (about to be a dead cat?) but why the third radiator? That must have been quite a project! Nah, try do a search. A third radiator isn't too difficult to install by the looks of things.
  9. This is the sequence of events just FYI: 1. One morning, I noticed oil patch near the (Aust) driver side front wheel - thought I might have spilled some oil while working on my cars. 2. Then noticed more than usual amount of vibration via the steering at speeds over 60kph - thought: hmm... maybe that's what they mean by good steering feedback. 3. Then noticed oil sitting inside the driver side front rim - got me worried at this stage. 4. Took off the rim, saw oil spray around the wheel arch in a centrifugal fashion, and oil in the strut boot and around the shining damper. The first question is: Am I correct that the strut is blown? I am now looking into getting replacements - most likely aftermarket coil-overs as I figured I might as well upgrade. But I came across a few replacements that specify they are for MY98 to MY2006. I have emailed the manufacturer but got no response. The question is this: Is there any difference between the suspension/strut setups of a MY97 vs the later models or have they simply left out MY97 by mistake? I know that there weres structural changes that resulted in reinforced suspension and allowed the use of 18 inch rims from MY98 and above, but does this affect the actual coil-over parts?
  10. Pics would be lovely. I've been thinking about doing this for a while.
  11. Paul, fantastic looking car. What's it like to drive? 100kph in 3.8sec, phewwww.... would literally smoke everything on the road. Wish I had $175k to spare.
  12. Have you been to the Tech Q&A section of www.pca.org? I think there were some explainations given in a few of the posts by a Porsche mastertech although they weren't really specific enough (like saying which beam/strut/chassis is not strong enough to support what) IMO. Do you have 18 inch turbo wheels or 18 inch turbo tech wheels? Are they genuine? I would love to know how much the rear 18 inchers weigh if you get a chance to weigh them when you take them off for the trade.
  13. Can 996 coil over struts be used in a 986 with light mods? Or are they completely different?
  14. The figures mean: 225 = width of tire 40 = 40% of width is side wall height 18 = fits 18inch diameter rims So if you do the maths, the two different sets of tire/rim combo results in slightly different overall diameter. This is completely normal and expected. Your speedo will most likely be more accurate if you increase your tire diameter/height as most Boxster speedos, certainly mine, overreads actual speed by around 7%. As for putting 18s on a 97, I've been wondering the same thing. I have been trying to find photos of the rear suspension/chassis setup of a later model car to compare it to my 97 model. Haven't found a good one yet. But there are people on this forum that uses >17inch rims on a MY97, I can't remember who. My thoughts would be that the reduced side wall on a 18 inch setup results in less cushioning of vibration and this does something to the (?fragile) suspension/chassis setup somehow. Although, if this is true, then Porsche really hasn't made the Boxster a very tolerant car from an engineering perspective. But I suppose the reliability of Boxsters is an entirely different can of worms.
  15. I believe I have Cup IIs on my 97. They fit well without problems.
  16. Yep. A Boxster based kit Diablo. Design and workmanship issues aside, I think the guy deserve credit for trying.
  17. Carrera engines do not turn in the opposite direction - they are mounted facing 180 degrees opposite direction. The difference is in the differential which puts the ring gear on the opposite side in a Boxster. That is how the drive direction is corrected. Loren, does this mean you can get a 996 transmission to work on a Boxster simply by swapping its ring gear to the opposite? Is this ring gear mount swappable or is the difference built into the frame work of things? Also, the tip transmission would be the same?
  18. What you say sounds very sensible, Rom. Thanks.
  19. And how much is "too much" then? Overfilling is overfilling. This is not good for the car/engine. There are all kinds of potential issues....oil foaming, fouling your plugs, messing-up your MAF sensor(s). Really? Engine oil fouling your plugs and messing up your MAF sensor? Sounds like you got a much bigger problem than just oil overfill. I would've thought problems would be related to the flow of oil if it's grossly overfilled. Hey dude, go ahead and overfill if you want. It's your car & engine. Oh, one more note, the overfill will mess up your cats. too! Yep. It's my car. And I don't want to overfill it. No, overfill will not mess up my cat convertor because my engine is intact.

  21. What exactly is the problem with a bit over filling? I would've thought car science is never exact. If the tolerance is that exact, then it's a poorly designed car.
