Hi All,
I just replaced my stock turbo twist 18 and tires that were totally shot with some SSR GT3 18" wheels with PS2's. I did notice a drastic reduction in road noise upon switching, but on one particular section of highway (60 miles of it) I now notice a droning hum at speed 70-90 mph.
I can't say it wasn't there with the old tires since they were so loud, but this section of highway is almost miserable.
Is there something I can do to eliminate this? Any ideas about what to check?
may be you can play around with tire pressure a bit to see if that helps. I am happy with 36/40 ( Porsche recommmended 36/44 for C4S )

Exactly. The Cayman should be judged on it's own merit :soapbox:
Viper501, Thank you for the video
-
It added 5 ponnies

Thanks guys,
The digital display before adding the oil showed the oil was 1/2 full. I added a half quart. I'll check for the smoke signal, and then check the filter cartridge.
The difference between the max/min is about 1.3 qt. According to P. and the gauge measurement is linear. You should be fine.

A stripped down, raw, light 996/997 from the factory. I know that the GT3 is available, but how about a plain old 996/997 with 350 hp weighing 400-500 lbs less than standard without having to tear it apart in my garage a la RS America?
Yeah, the current GT3 is as close to the spirit of the 911 RS America as you can get and better in every respect... except $. May be the rumoured Cayman Club Sport? :P

The 'prespective' is that the auto market has changed and I am just glad they are still around..... and more importantly, Porsche is still making CarreraGTs, GT3s, B-Turbos,C4Ss,997Ss..... I mean what other 'car' would you rather drive?
-
My picks would be for all-round driving:
1# Michelin Pilot Sports
2# Bridgestone S-02
3#Conti
Right On!

..... As soon as I turn the key in the door lock, the alarm goes off immediatly. Even when I keep the door closed.
This happened to me a couple of times but the other times it worked Ok. too lazy to bring it in... I'll wait for the annual checkup. :drive:

according to the owner's manual p.247, technical data:
265/35 18 snow tires go with 10J x 18 Rims with 47mm rim offset.
a set of new snow tires last at least 2 to 3 seasons, I think the time, the hassle and $ spend for tires mounting & balancing each and every season will pay for a new set of rims.

I had tried both PS N1 & SO3 on my 2000 C2, they both are excellent choices, the SO3s have a slight edge in the wet & a somewhat quieter on certain concrete road surfaces in the Bayarea but I'd prefer the precise response & road feel of the PS.
I have heard the new PS2 is the tire to kill for but haven't tried it. I am also very happy with the PS N1 rib on my C4S.
Whichever you choose, get the same brand and same N rating tire for the 4 corners. :drive:

Assumption is the mother of all Sins  but you are correct in this case, we've got this stuff too in the cold winter months, yes even in CA. :drive:

I'm with Tool Pants, no sweat.
Amsoil 20W-50 is a high performance synthetic motor oil, very comparable with Mobil 15W-50 which is recommanded by Porsche for areas with ambient temperatures higher than 50F.

A rep at the local auto parts store said, that to be very careful in using Fuel injector cleaners, such as Techron, because is could ruin your engine. Could something like Techron, set off any codes?
Techron is great for cleaning out carbon & gum deposits but reported having issues with oil contamination. Just to be safe, do the treatment right BEFORE oil change. So far, I have not setting off any engine codes.

C4S turbo twist wheels
Fronts are 225/40 ZR 18 N3, 18 X 8 with 50mm offsets P-zero assim.
Rears are 295/30 ZR 18 N3, 18 X 11 with 45mm offsets P-zero assim.
The front wheel will fit perfectly. But you'll need wheels with 63mm rim offset for the rear - The rear wheel from the C4S (with 45mm offset) will not fit. B)
-
Do you have P-Zeros? If so, sorry but it's time to get new shoes.

The SilverFusion web site is kaput, does anyone know where I can get a pair of their W5W bulbs?

The RMS issue sure has taken a big bite out of the joy of P-ownership in recent years, we all feel your pain Poursha, I know I do. Porsche can make it right by extending the warrenty, at least for the RMS, to 100K miles. :soapbox:
-
My OBC showed 31 miles to empty, but 13.1 gallons is all I can put in before spilling (I have a 16.6 gallon tank) , so I don't think the 2.6 gallons in reserve is included in the OBC range calculation. Am I right? B)
-
from the OBC, I've got a range from the low tens  for a spirited sprint in the back roads to a very environmental friendly 28ml/gal at a more or less constant 75mph on hwy. :clapping:
-
I've found a suppplier for the xenon color matched H6W "city lights" bulbs but unfortunitely they are on back order :(
-
What?...They drove your car even though they knew full well "there was a blockage in the oil system" ? What is this? Damned the oil starvation! keep their finger acrosed & just drove it until it's fixed or get a new engine from Porsche? and geee... I thought it was part of their job to find out what caused the oil blockage?
-
It seems that Porsche finally got the RMS problem under control, the reported RMS cases have dropped significantly the last 12 months but sorry, RMS is still alive & well even in MY2003. I haven't heard any RMS case in MY2004, if that hellps.

IMHO, the 996 Facelift is the best looking model there is right now!
With the 996 and Facelift there was a Evolution but with the 997, hmm..
Question is how would the picture looks like for the next generation, would it still Evolution?
cheers,
Tony
Exactly! If that's what the 997 is all about , I don't think it can last more than 2 to 3 model years. I am looking forward to the 998. B)

So would a N2, being a second generation, be considered better by Porsche?
In the western culture, newer is almost always better. Same holds for tyres.
For a specific tyre, e.g. like PilotSport, from the same manufacturer, Michelin, PilotSport2,N2 is better, bc it is an improved version of the original PilotSport, N1.
Another good example is the Continental SportContac tyre, the N2 is definitely better than N1. But the point is, the SportContact N2 is not necessary better than e.g. the PilotSport N1. or the P-Zero N4 is better than all the N1, N2, N3 rated tyres from other tyre makers.
Here we go again
in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)
Posted
The oval area betweeen the polished rim and the central pipe was painted black from the factory.
Enjoy your new ride!
