  1. As long as the dvd player has analog outs, a modulator will work fine. Only thing I can see is the low end on the dvd's overdriving the amp (which is crap). Some 40Hz high-pass filters work fine. I don't suppose you'll be driving while watching these dvd's?
  2. This is not an uncommon occurence. Though rms is in the lead, it would not surprize me if intermediate shaft failures are number two on the engine replacement list. I'm certainly familiar with it having had my engine replaced. We drive mass produced cars that are as sophisticated, if not more so, than exotica. These things happen. The likelihood of it happening with a new or rebuilt engine are slim. If you like the car, I would not loose any sleep over what happened. Also don't draw any distinctions between rebuilt and new. P is not consistent with engine numbering and can use new
  3. I have a 40th with X74. It basically sits on the ground. About every 6" along the bottom edge I put a series of wide flange aluminum pop rivets. You can't see them but when I scrape they take all the load and keep the chin about 1/8" off the pavement. The pop rivets look like crap but the chin spoiler is still without a nick. You can't see the rivets unless you get on your knees.
  4. I assume you mean GSD3's. I put two sets on two different BMW's a couple of years ago. The first set had nothing but balancing problems from day 1. One tire was replaced. After a few months of screwing around I dumped them for P-Zero's. The second set was not without its balancing challenges but they were manageable. However, after about 10,000 miles one of the tires went out of round (assume it was a belt separating). I think these tires are trash. Others do better - witness Audi's desire to base the A8 on the Quattroporte platform.   7. PTEC, Thanks for the reply. The leak was -- at least appeared to be -- right above the bellhousing. I now understand the maintenance of oil pressure and the fact the valve train seemed ok. A few hours after it happened a retired F1 mechanic for Lotus and his son, a piston engine airplane mechanic dropped in. We had a heck of time coming up with explanations. The intermediate shaft was immediately eliminated as we believed it probably drove the oil pump. Have to hand it to Champion as well P. Called in about 7 am and the car was picked up within minutes.   8. I just had one go through the block with a truly ugly sound. Odd thing is the car never skipped a beat and I was convinced the sound was from another vehicle. Drove another 30 miles just fine, pressure and temp normal. Once the engine was turned off oil simply flowed out. Not a spot of oil on the undercarriage so I assume negative engine pressure kept me from losing it. New engine on the way. What does this shaft do? I thought perhaps the oil pump but I maintained pressure.

Though it is a firmer ride, X74 provides a substantially more controlled and less harsh drive. If I'm being stupid it will certainly hit the bump stops faster but in 95% of my driving its materially less harsh than the US MO30 that came with the car.
  10. I participated in running a Range Rover Defender desert rally car until recently. We all had a certain oiled replaceable manufacturer's name plastered on our vehicles. We had to, it was part of the required decal display. Virtually all of us ran paper elements - mostly factory stock. Bikes to a great extent made these filters popular. Mostly two strokes, lousy volumetric efficiency and rebuilt frequently. Advanced wear was a non issue. If you want noise, go for it. If you want performance think who has the better engineering group. If you plan to keep your car for awhile ...

Thanks Kim, "If you are talking about the intermitent wiper mode selected with the wiper stalk, then my car (and I assume all other without rain sensor) has a round knob, low on the left side of the center console, that adjusts the interval .... further clockwise = shorter interval between swipes." Yes, its this one. 2004 40th. Its shortest interval setting is a less frequent interval than the longest interval setting on any of our MB's or BMW's. Its pretty useless.
  14. Is it engine management cutting in? Mine (X51) cuts in at a touch over 3,000 rpm. Try putting the car in second gear and accelerate moderately. If you feel a transition, note the rpm and then go back to the autobahn.
  15. MadCow, We have a 40th and love it. The only issue I had with the car was the suspension. Its harsh and its detached. Tried messing with tire pressures which helped quite a bit but we finally ended up replacing it with X74 and the car now qualifies as a Porsche. If ride height is a concern, ROW MO30 is also nice. If you enjoy driving, I think swapping out the suspension is a must. With X74, there's actually less harshness. Tire pressures are 35F/40R.
  16. I am assuming that all 996 intermittents are like mine where the interval between swipes is so long, even at the highest speed setting, that its almost useless. Can the timing on the intermittent wiper be changed (relay replacement, whatever)? With the amount of rain we get in Florida, it would certainly be nice to have an intermittent feature that was effective.
  17. The plate works well. While it crushes against the oil pan, it seems to distribute the impact well (obviously on #2). Its difficult to drain the oil without getting it on the top side of the plate. Then it drips for days unless you get in between the pan and the plate and clean it out. Pull the plate for oil changes.
  18. We're in Europe on holiday and have located a '92 Carrera RS in Germany. The car appears right, chassis and engine numbers are correct for the series, wheels are by SM. Anyone know what it takes to bring this car into the US?   19. Finally! Thanks to some input from a variety of forum members, I finally got a hardwired modulator working well in the MOST equipped P. I've been screwing around with it on an off for months. Bottom line is I can set the iPod at about 80% to 90% volume (EQ off) and run the Becker up to max (40) without overdriving the amp. The sound quality with mp3 coded at 192 kbps is very comparable to the same tracks played on the source CD in the Becker. The bad news is the only reason for this similarity is P's "hi fi" is a piece of crap. Which means seeking a solution for an aux line directly int
  20. Pre X74 I ran 32F/36R on 18's. It sounds like quite a drop but I felt the car's balance, control and ride was substantially improved. There's quite a few on this board running at 32F and between 36 and 38R. Not a bad place to start.
  21. Just got back from prepping an El-Chott car on its way from Switzerland to Tunisia. We used inserts (forget brand, made in Australia). They are not light. They require a hole drilled into the rim for the new air valve. They are an absolute pain to install and you won't want to see what your rims look like after the install. So far after 7 days they appear to working just fine and allow us to be more aggressive in the sand. I'd rather have a flat in the middle of nowhere than put these on a P.
  22. I have a buddy looking at a 993 whose asking my opinion. I have another buddy who had a 993 and the brakes failed twice within the first year. By the way he describes it, the entire hydraulics went down with no failsafe. This description is supported by a co-worker as the second time happened right in front of his office. I've seen 996 brakes go down but I did a quick search and find nothing on 993's. Is this an issue that crops up on a "usual" basis? thanks,
  23. After 4,000 miles my B&M short shift has developed some side play within gear. When holding the lever in gear, it moves about 1/8th inch right or left. Makes a cheap metal sound. Is this normal or can it be adjusted out? It was dealer installed and I haven't gotten into it. Looking at the install manual does not indicate any adjustments for this. "Short shift getting longer"
  24. Great topic and a great short shift. I can't comment on reduction as I had the B&M installed before I picked up the car but its a lovely product -- after it loosens up a bit.
