  1. I use 91 here (Ontario, Canada). I could'nt notice the difference between running 94 & 91. I use shell 91 which contains no ethanol, most of the 94 sold up here (Sunoco/PetroCan) does.
  2. I've got the RTS for my 996 and the standard (not racing bike) carriers (though I've never used them). I cant think of why the racing bike carrier would'nt work with a mountain bike (as you mentioned, perhaps width?). I do believe the Porsche racks (at least the accessories) were made by Thule. Yes, my bike & ski racks fit into the groove in the cross members, though I dont see this as a big advantage, in fact it's a bit of a pain to slide them in, and get them centered & tightened. Also the rubber strips need to be removed from the bars. I found that the rack whisled at hight speeds with these removed. I bought a regular Thule kyak accessory for my rowing shell, (yes, it did draw a bit of attention, but it worked well) it fastened easily & securely using c-type clamps, and the rubber stips can be left in. Aditionaly, the regular/standard accessories can be used on most other roof racks, the custom Porsche ones require bars with the same slot size & set-up.
  3. I had a similar issue & noticed the screeching intermittently when it was warm or humid out. I figured it was just dirty and/or dried out window seals. I cleaned the inside of the seals then sparingly applied a bit of silicon lube (sprayed it on a cloth then ran it along the inside of the seals) & have had no screeching since.
  4. First of all, thanks for the laugh dphill66, that description of your experience was so funny I had to read it a few times. But most of all thanks for the tips, you saved me allot of aggravation & pointed me in the right direction. I had the same problem, & tired drilling/tapping, but broke the tap in one of the holes. So I ordered new plates & installed them myself (believe it or not, the dealer would not do it, they had no experience with this- the service rep thought the plates were welded on and that it was a job for a body shop??. Anyhow, it was easier than I thought, all the parts you need to remove snap off & on easily, just remember to put a bit of sealant under the brackets before you install to stop water from leaking in. I'm quite happy with the rack (finally). Oh, and I sent a "how to" description to the dealer & thanked him for saving me the $400 in labour the probably would have charged me.
  5. A dated follow up, but I did finally buy a 996 (late build 99, silver/black, 6spd coupe), almost a year after I started looking. I was patient and found pretty much exactly what I was looking for, and am quite happy so far, so I do advocate patience for anyone who is searching. I actually bought from a private seller on e-bay. With a small deposit on the line, I flew down, did a final inspection & test drive, (& most importantly met the owner), paid the balance then drove it 8 hours home. After a year of research & looking, I figured I knew what to look for, + I had already resolved that there was a chance I'd need to replace the engine at some time, (which a PPI usually wont predict). I appreciate all the help from this forum. I'll be posting any info I can help with on this board as I settle into ownership
  6. I had the same problem finding soemone, so ended up doing it myself last weekend. It was easier than I'd expected, it only took about an hour. You'll need one of these http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=993, and the stereo removel tool. I'm in Toronto so could give you a hand if you want.
  7. OK, thanks for the comments. Think I'll hold off on this one, tough to fork out that much $$ for a car that leaks in 3 places. I'd rather wait for a car I am comfortable with & take the risk without the aftermarket warranty.
  8. First off, thanks to all for posting on this forum, it's been a great help as I go down the road towards purchasing my first porsche. I recently had a PPI done (at a dealership) on a 99 C4 (11/98 build) with 75,000 kms. It came back with a few minor issues and the following 3 "major" items - otherwise it checked out okay. 1. RMS leaking - it's not a "dripping on the floor" leak but was noted by the mechanic. I've read lots on the issue, but the question is - if it's not that bad can it be left as is until the clutch needs changing? Is there a possibility the leak could cause further damage? The service rep. told me if left unfixed it could damage the clutch/transmission?? (looking at the service records the seal has never been changed on the car) 2. Both vario cam seals leaking - I've not read anything on this, is it serious? 3. Coolant flange on the engine is leaking - This one concerns me the most as the service rep could not give me an estimate on the fix. He just stated the mechanic noted some dried coolant residue in that area. Could this be a sign of a serious problem, ie cracked block, etc?? I also realize it might be a simple problem (loose hose type thing)?? Just looking for comments if anyone has experience or insight on the above thanks,
