  1. Hi,

Thanks in Advance for any help you can give.

I noticed a puddle last night when I returned to my car, I brushed it off and started my journey to a friends. Halfway there I got 'Coolant Level Low' warning sign and a blinking red box on my temp gauge (even though my temp gauge was normal - a smidge over 180). I didn't know the area and only had a couple of miles to go so continued to my friends place and parked up. Checked the coolant and it was indeed very low. I put about a gallon of water in there as a temp fix to get me home, I could immediately see it leaking out the middle of the car, infront of the rear wheels. The car was fine on the 10min drive home (no check engine lights or overheating).

I jacked the car up this morning to investigate (after reading my 'TOTAL' care warranty doesn't actually cover coolant hoses) and I think I found the offending hose.

    I have some pics here...

I'm assuming my hose needs replacing and would appreciate any advice.

Instructions and part number if it needs replacing would be great!

    Thanks Again

    great shop in Vancouver...

I'm having a related problem with my '98 Boxster.

My SRS light started coming on intermitently, but for less then 6 seconds, then it shuts off. Especially when I come to a stop. It is not happening when the seat belt is not buckled. Called the dealer - he said it sounded like I needed to replace both seat belt wiring harnesses, with 3 hours labor per side. Does anybody have any thoughts. (This is my first posting on Tenn Tech.)

    Many thanks

    Hfactor

    :welcome:

They can't possibly know what needs to be replaced without putting a tester on the car (Durametric, PST2, or PIWIS tester).

There is a TSB for seat belt buckle problems - but did they look up your VIN to see if it had already been done to your car? My guess is... not likely - they just want your money.

Thanks for the quick reply Loren.

I figured as much. I don't think it was ever done. Bought my Boxter from a buddy, the original owner last year. Already had to replace the top motor. Guess I'll have to get a tester plugged in to see what the codes come up. Having read some earlier threads, I was trying to look up the TSB on the NHTSA docket. Couldn't find it. Could it be it was not covering the 98 986?

    It is TSB 1/04 6924 Airbag Warning Light Comes On: Fault Codes 45, 46, 48 and 49 -- Dated Jul 21, 2004

  3. Don't miss the October issue (#168) of Excellence Magazine, "Trojan Horse," pp.52-60, for the best review of the new Carreras I've seen so far. Not up on their website yet, so I guess you'll have to buy a copy.

I like the direct injection and that the engine has lost some weight. And the PDK seems neat. But i can't help thinking that Porsche has a responsibility to make more efficient cars. Just because someone can afford to put an unlimited supply of fuel in a car doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. I think a 35mpg sports car is an immediate realistic goal that should be set. Even the old Triumph Sprite's gets 30mpg. And that was 30 years ago. If the designers are truely bright then they should see the enviroment and efficiency should be the goal. Not just to become the worlds most profitable sports car manufacturer.

  4. So the 3.6 is on it's way - roll on 340 HP! It will be a long project however as I want to do it myself based on Todd's guides. But, without AC in my garage, it rules out the summer in Dubai where I am currently! (too hot for another two months)

Anyway I was searching for any internet info on DIY Boxster engine drops without professional hydraulic lifts - I.e Jack stands/Jack/Scissor Lift. Can anyone point me in the right direction if this is an option? I’ve ordered a Bentley book from Amazon, which is on it’s way but it would also be good to see if there is a Howto out there.

You know i don't have the issue with me now but in the latest Grassroots Motorsports Mag there is a company that sells a large sissor jack. It slides under your car in the middle and you place the 4 jacking points and away you go. Fast and easy. Might get in the way of an engine swap.

Btw are you flying/working in Dubai?

  5. Rsfeller is right about the Bentley Service Manual. Very, very excellent tool that is by my left foot at this computer.

At even $350 I thought it was a good enuf deal to have the full set. But at $200 it is a steal. I plan to keep my car for a long time. And actually hope not to have to use the manuals.

    Thank you Jeff at Sunset.

Those with old cars know how information dries up as cars age, and some manuals are reprinted with the same errors they originally had. And some are not reprinted or even remembered.

Anyone with a complete set of 914-6 manuals for $200 bucks (or even $350) please PM me.

Yes $200 is a steal. Glad i spent the money!

  6. check the emergency brake cable?

I have a '99 Boxster with 48k on it. Just finished a complete brake job of front and rear pads and cross drilled rotors and now I have a clicking noise from the left rear wheel. Anyone have an idea what it might be? Any help would be appreciated from my fellow Porsche lovers ! Thanks, :cursing: Jake

Make sure the pads backing plates are not hitting the disk where is sticks out toward the wheel. Some pads holes make the pade sit lower in the caliper.....

I had the same kinda thing on my car after i did the brakes. I believe it is the brake shield. Does it happen all the time or just when you are turning?

The remedy is to bend the shield out of the way. Stick a screwdriver inbetween the wheel carrier and the shield and pry it over.

  7. Hi,

I am starting to search for a 1989 911 and was wondering if the 911's whale tail is removable? I read a posting that said that the owner had the whale tail in his garage. If I purchase a vehicle with a whale tail, can I remove it? If so, are the parts available to use the car w/o the tail?

    Thanks

I believe that the 911 Turbo came with the whaletails, and the 911 carrera's came with a "carrera" tail.

Your best bet is to find a regular deck lid and save the tail for when you sell the car. If you do take off the

tail you will be left with a ring around where the tail was sitting and find a grill.

    Hope these pics help.

  8. Me too.

Would like to know how the problem was resolved and i am convinced the problem was minor, do give us an update

My buddy just bought a 97 with a blown motor and we have been toying the idea with a bigger motor.

But for now to get it running i think we are going to get a 2.5l and go from there.

www.car-part.com has a great network. Just a 2.5l longblock you can get for $1000.00. Cheap. If you just

want to get the car going again. Don't expect a warranty.

Aside from that any idea on how a piston breaks like this one?

  9. I was invited to review the new Panamera this weekend. I had to sign a confidentiality agreement, so I can't say a lot about it. I can say this: I have read a lot of negative opinions about this yet to be released car. This is a phenomenal car. It is nice looking and the interior blew my mind; I loved it. It is an extraordinary car. I would love to have one.

So you can't talk about it....do you have a picture?

  10. Guys,

I'm going to attempt a DIY re-charge on my '99 Boxster... wish me luck. I know the process isn't complicated but so far I haven't found a how-to, and I don't have a workshop manual.

Could someone kindly write down the steps. The correct pressures and photos would be really helpful too. This'll be a great resource for everyone.

    Cheers,

    Simon

    Taken from the Service Manual.

    1) Remove refrigerant by suction.

    2) Remove faulty part

    3) Evacuate

    4) Check the system for leaks

    5) Rinse with refrigarent

    6) Empty the system by suction again.

    7) Evacuate

    8) Fill

Some things to remember....small hose is always hi pressure and large hose is low pressure.

    Holds 850g of 134a refrigerant

Oil 195+- 15cm3 ND 8.......whatever this amounts to i have no idea.....

Just don't forget to add the Oil.

  11. If you have a CDR-220 you can order an Aux Jack cable from Becker of North America.

Part number BNA-1319.116. This cable plugs right into the back of your radio and into

the aux jack of your I-Pod.

Cost of mine was $29.36 delivered.

You can do it for $2. Buy an cable that has the headset jack on one end and the RCA ends on the other.

Cut the RCA ends off and put some small electrical connectors on them.

Put the two grounds together and you will be left with 3 ends.

Attached is the back of your deck. Attach the 3 wires on the back there.

Turn on you AUX setting and away you go.

Can be done for free if you already have the cable.

  12. Loren, do you know if the boxster manuals cover the 2005 987 model too ? Thanks
That would be a 986 Boxster only.

To my knowledge Porsche has never produced a printed manual for the 987 or 997 series cars - only electronic versions.

Just bought the 986 boxster set for $200 at "Porsche Parts at Dealers Cost".

    What a deal!!!!!!

  13. Although it's an old topic, but you are not allone. MY01 C2 had the head lights stolen before my ownership. When I bought the car, I got the history of claims and I found that the insurance had paid CAD5500 in total to replace 2 headlights, repaired the damaged paint and replaced a new window shield.

A pair of HID headlights worth about CAD2000 on craigslist and costed insurance CAD1600 each to replace.

What is funny in Canada (B.C.) is that you have to disclose damage over $2000 to the buyer.

I sold a Ferrari 355 to a guy and had to tell him about the prior "Damage" history.

Of course a vehicle with a damage history is worth less $$$.

The claim was for a new windshield. $2500.

  14. Hey everyone,

Anybody have an idea of what a brake pad replacement should run on 2000 996 Carrera 2? I have gotten a couple quotes around $500 (seems high to me)

I know it probably an easy DIY...but i live in a condo and dont really have the tools to swing it - any recommendations on brand i should try to get? Also, should I go to the dealer for this or do you think its ok to hit up a "brake place"

    Thanks!

Have you joined the Porsche Club of America?

I am sure there are a lot of people in your area that would help you out with a small job like this.

    and

The tools required are very basic.

Jack you already have one in your trunk and all the tools to remove the wheels.

Just need a punch for the pin and rag so you don't scuff the caliper and large plyers.

All tools you could buy at BigLots for under $20. Make that $10.

Order the pads from Sunset Imports.. http://www.sunsetimports.com/porscheatcost.php

All for less than 1/2 of your $500 quote.

And this includes all pads sensors and springs.

  15. Mine went out in Aug 2007. Had 22,100 miles and was a 1998. Needless to say, PNA denied their was a problem and refused to help out with any type of financial support. The Nov 2007 issue of Road and Track I think, talks about the Boxster and it's known engine problems. They even said tha the "CEL" check engine light actually means "Change Engine Light" because so many engine failures were seen in the early models. I went ahead and wound up putting a 3.4 996 engine in there and had it for 2 months and it's running fine with the 1/3 gain in HP. If ever someone was able to get a lawsuit going, count me in. It's ridiculous that the engine can't even make it to it's 1st scheduled maintanence of 30k miles.

Mine got replaced at 30k. The porsche dealership in Charlotte did the replacement. This was done while the previous owner had the car. The dealership told me that the previous owner had driven the car while it was overheating. After some back and forth the dealership put a remanufactured motor in. I have no idea if Porsche split the bill. I feel safe with the reman. I think that the people in the US know how to put them back together better than the factory.

  16. I've recently purchased a 98 Boxter, I have a bunch of stuff going on and I need help in determining wether they are all interconnected, It started with me realizing the horn didn't work, Found a blown fuse and replaced it no horn, Eventually the car died a few days later, new it was a poss Alternator Problem, Charged the Batt hooked it up car drained Batt in a few minutes, Battery warning light on, ABS warning light on and Traction warning and switch light on. Put a new battery in and restored power temporarily, removed alternator and sent it away today to have reg replaced, The airbag on the steering wheel shows classic signs of collapse due to the four bushings, The alarm horn next to the battery has been disconnected, Can the power drain that I'm guessing put too much strain on the volt Reg Because by the Horn Contacts touching at the steering wheel, I haven't looked yet But I'm geussing the horns have been disconnected under the front Bumper. and what In the alarm system could be the cause of a power drain, as I was installing the new battery, the alarm went off silently and I noticed that the turn signals were flashing only on the drivers side of the car is That Normal, Thanks, Oh one last thing, What is the Bullet shaped sensor mounted in the grill on the pass side in front of the horns for ?

Airbag bracket gets tired after years of use. You should be able to pay $80 for a new one.

Get a volt meter go to your fuse panel and find out what is drawing power. Then find out why that item is using power with the car shut off. (Short, fault)

The bullet shaped sensor i believe is the OAT probe. (Outside Air Temp).

If you get time, take the front bumper cover off and clean out the radiators.

    http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...mp;hl=radiators

  17. Lol - Seafeye, you're the one who gave me the confidence to try the whole ordeal myself. Thanks for the write up and picks on your bearing problems.

I'm also going to replace my cv joint boots while I'm in there. Got whole kits on ebay for $13.95 each (grease, clamps, boot).

While we are on the subject....

If you go through the trouble of taking the wheel carrier totally off the car then don't bother buying the puller or the home depot puller either. Just take the carrier to a repair shop and ask them to press out the old bearing and put in the new.

Or for $169 at Harbor Freight..China Freight you can buy your own hydraulic press. Cheaper than the sir tools. But you do have more work to do going

this route. Plus you will need a wheel alignment.

Or for $30 i will rent you my tool.
