  1. Thanks Loren for the electrical diagram. Has anyone replaced a control unit for a convertible top for a 1997 993 or similar vehicle. I am wondering if it is a plug in type of unit or if it has to be programed using the Porsche computer diagnostic system. Local dealer charged my friend ~$275 to diagnosed the problem and has quoted ~$700 for the control unit for the convertible top plus installation. It can be bought through Sunset Porsche for $380. If it is just a plug in type of unit it should be simple to change. Anyone have any experience with 993 convertible tops? Dave T
  2. Hey, access to TSBs and other docs makes us happier people, I think. :renntech: I was new to the Porsche world two years ago when I bought my 99 Carerra and thanks to this website I have not been to the dealer. The speed of response to questions is unbelievable and the information available by searching is fantastic. Thanks again to all who contribute the time and energy to the website. Dave T :renntech:
  3. Does anyone have a good diagram of the convertible top relay and wiring diagram. The top on my friends 993 does not go up at all. I've read that some of the 993's and Boxters have a relay problem. Does anyone know where the relay for the top is located or have a good diagnostic procedure for 993 convertible top operation. Dave T
  4. Loren Thanks for the reply. I talked to Durametrics and they recommnended I download the latest version of their software and it allowed me to read the VIN , etc and reset the fault. It was a motronic fault. I guess a general fault which I cleared and hasn't come back yet. Great website and great software. Dave T
  5. On a 1997 993 cabrolet, I'm trying to help a friend check out why the check engine light stays on. I'm using the Durametric code reader and getting a Motronics Fault. When I clear the fault and Durametric checks for faults, the fault show up again. Durametrics will also not pull up the VIN and other information. It does check the ABS and Air conditioning so I know it is working. It also works for all codes on my 99 carrera so I don't think there is a software problem. The only known problem besides the check engine light being on is that the top does not go up and down automatically. I don't think the problems are related. Any suggestions on where to start? Dave T
  6. Thanks for the help. There is a center bolt that had to be removed. Seal removal and replacement went easily. Filled with fluid and the rearend is quiet and the garage floor is dry. Dave T
  7. I just did the 60,000 mile and it was relatively easy. Time consuming because I had not worked on a Porsche and getting the plugs changed took time. It is not difficult but getting at the bolts can be difficult until you find the right combination of extensions etc. Probably the most important tool that I needed was a 5 MM allen socket that fits a 1/4 in drive. The 3/8 drive which is common can only be used for some of the cap screws. During my service I found a leaking seal which is my next challenge. If you have worked on other vehicles, read the DIY section and look at the vehicle and you'll see it is not rocket science. It is removal and replacement.
  8. I have a left rear axle seal that is leaking. The vehicle is a 99 Carerra with Tiptronic. I have a service manual but unfortunately it only has the manual transimssion section. Is the left rear axle (half shaft) removed in the same manner? I am assuming the method of holding in the half shaft for the final drive is the same for the manual and tiptronic transmission. The service manual recommends using two bolts in the flange, threadinng them through the flange and putting a metal plate where the bolt will contact the housing and using the bolts to pry out the half shaft. I am doing exactly what they recommended but I encountered significant resistance and don't want to force anything without being sure that only the snap ring is holding it in. OBTW Just finished the 60,000 mile service. Thanks to this forum and the information in the DIY section it was easy. Thanks in advance for your help Dave T
  9. Do you know if the bearing caqn be replaced with the transmission/differential in the vehicle? Is this typical problem?
  10. I ordered plugs (Benu 14fgr-6KQU) for my 99 Carerra . When I received them the box indicated they are gapped to .7mm. The Porsche Service Information indicates that this plug should be gapped to 1.6mm. The Benu 14fr6 LDU should be gapped to .7mm. Since I am new to Porsche plugs with multiple bottom electrodes, do you have to purchase the plugs with the correct gap or can the gap be changed. If they can be changed how do you measure the gap on this type of plug with multiple grounds (bottom electrodes). Is the gap still measured between the center electrode and the bottom electrodes or is it measured between the bottom electrode and the insulator? Thanks in advance for the help. Dave T
  11. Could anyone provide the part number for the hose shown below and recommendation as to where to buy it. Is it only available through the dealer? 99 Carerra with Tiptronic.
  12. I'm performing the 60,000 mile service on my 99 Carerra and there is oil leaking from aroud the left rear axle seal. At about 57,000 miles, I started to notice a noise (slight rumble) coming from the driverside, at the back of the car, around the wheel / transmission / drivetrain area. The noise has been slightly louder prior to putting the car on jacks and discovering the leak. Are there any known problems with the axle seal, and how difficult is it to change the axle seal, or shouuld I be looking at possible other problems? There have been no other problems such as shifting. Help is always appreciated. Dave T
  13. I've got 57,000 on it now, and I planning on doing it myself. I've worked on a lot of cars but this is my first Porsche. Reading all the post has been a great help. Does anyone have any recommendation for parts suppliers?
  14. I'm new to the forum, but the information on the site is fantastic. I plan to do as much of the maintenance and repairs as possible and will be processing a Durametric Code reader. I recently purchased a 99 Carrera Coupe, Tiptonic, 52,000 miles from a private party. I don't have a book that has the maintenance recommendations but I have the receipts from the prior owner for the last 25,000 miles of service. What is the recommended maintenance at 60K miles? The dealer says, oh that is a "major" service costing around $2,400. They also recommend pulleys and rollers need to be changed. Am I missing something? I have never heard of this on any vehicle I've owned and maintained. I would appreciate a listing of the required/recommended maintenance at 60K or point me to it on the website. The only problem I've had is what appears to be a problem for others is the ABC/TC lights turning on and off. Hopefully the code reader will help find the problem.
