  1. Hello All, I did not read through this entire post but I would like to share with you my experience with my 1999 C2. I bought the car at 40k miles and at 48k miles, I hear a noise such as a coin in a dryer. A very inconsistant knock that is loud but comes and goes. The car still drove fine. Turns out the problem was the intermediate shaft bearing failed. Originally I was going to try and learn and rebuild this engine myself but I found a local Porsche specialist who sold me a freshly rebuilt 3.4 engine with 1 year warrantee for 6500 installed. The shop is called Strauss auto. I have been to their shop and it seems as they have builted many porsche engine so I went ahead and gave it a shot. My car have been running great eversince (knock on wood). Although 6500 is a pretty large chunk of change for me, I am still not discouraged to drive my porsche. Keep in mind that there are many Porsche engine builders out there that can refurbish our engines for a fraction of the dealer's refurbished one. I believe that in time, there will be even more engine builders and prices of rebuilding 996 engines will drop.
  2. Lately I have problems with my driver side seat heat. When I press the button to turn it on, the light flashes red then off right away and it does not turn on. Passenger side works fine. What should I check?
  3. Hi, I am looking to install the PSE switch on my 99 996. I already have the PSE mufflers and I was looking on www.carnewal.com and noticed they had a wiring kit that comes with a few misc parts such as the relay / vacuum reservoir etc. What else is missing from that kit? Is that kit from carnewal the same as the Porsche Part number 996 612 978 00?
  4. I am going to be removing my engine soon to do a rebuild. There is a noise coming from the block and it sounds very inconsistant. If I rev up the engine, the sound goes away. I fail to believe that my engine is trashed and that I will need a new engine so I am going to tear it apart and rebuild it. As of now, my car can start up and drives perfectly (aside from the noise). Anyways, I will be doing all the work in my garage. I have pulled bmw engines out from the past but removing porsche engine is a whole new story to me. How high will I need to lift the car to pull the engine out?
  5. This is the support topic for the DIY Tutorial How to change power steering pump. Please post here if you have any questions or feedback.
  6. My ABS and brake fluid lights are on in my dash board. I have a 99 and my TC light is working normal. I checked the brake fluid and it seems to be normal. I checked all fuses and none are blown. What else can it be?
  7. Mine that I purchased 2 weeks ago: 99 c2 58k miles bottom is dry CEL just came on and code reads p0102 which I have heard is the MAF
  8. Just FYI, in case you were unaware, if you have the traction control option on a 1999 model C2 your car is also equipped with a mechanical LSD (Limited Slip Differential). The '99 C2 was the last normal (not GT3) version of the 996 with this feature. My '99 996 was so equipped. It was great for autocrossing; I could turn off the electronic traction control which tended to cut the power at inoportune moments, yet I still got the benefit of enhanced traction with the LSD. This is great info. My early 99 has TC as I see a button to turn it off. I never knew I had LSD until now!
  9. I think a database of car's mileage and problems along the way would be a great benefit to everyone. Such as this broke down at x miles so that other 996 owners can be aware.
  10. Why? I wanted to see how long these cars last. For my M3, it is normal to see 150k miles on it. As far as I know, I don't see many 996 above 100k.
  11. I would like to know what mileage everyone has on the 996. Also, if there has been problems with the car, please list it. Thanks!
  12. I have owned a Honda Prelude back in the days. I ran over a pot hole and cracked the car in half! The car separated from one strut tower to the firewall and to the other strut tower. It was separated about 1". I will never drive a honda again after that horrible experience. I think I will take my chances with the 996. It has been my dream car for as long as I can remember. I am glad that you think it would have no problem making to 150k miles. Just what I wanted to hear!
  13. Thanks for the info Danyol. Would these early 996 model last till 150k or even 200k miles? My old bmw 325is lasted me until 240k miles then it got t-boned. I do change my oil frequently...My m3 is suppose to be changed at 6k miles but I change it every 3k. I think I am pretty good at keeping up with the maint. on my cars. My main concern is, will I see problems if I buy a carrera at around 75k miles? I plan on keeping it for a while and racking up miles on it. Prob no track time but mainly street driving. Also, I don't hammer my car around town..I like to drive it more lightly for the most part. Does anyone have a 996 with over 150k miles?
  14. Hi, I am new to this forum and I have always wanted a Carrera. Looks like I am going to get the early model 996 such as 99-00 in the next few months. I am planning to spend $30k on the car total. I planned to find one for cheaper and set aside a few thousand for maint. The question I have are: How is the 996 as a daily driver? I see a few treads stating that the engine has gone bad at aprox 125k miles...is this common? Whats your mileage? What mpg do you get? I am coming from a 97 e36 m3. I am used to owning cars with 100k + miles on it. My previous bmw 325is had 240k miles!
