  1. I was hoping to use the "open glove box" method so that I can tell when my doors lock. (For those not familiar with this: there is a beep when you lock the car and forget to close the glove box.) Unfortunately, this did not seem to work. I thought that I might have left the wire unplugged after my most recent removal of the rear center console to install the SSK. So yesterday I removed the console, but the wire is still attached to the plug under the glove box lock. Any ideas? :(
  2. This seems to have been commented on before--here is a posting on 6speedonline: Rain sensor retrofit question I had both the rain sensor and dimming mirror retrofit done at the same time. From reading the manual it describes being able to change the sensitivity of the rain sensor by turning the knob with the picture of the wiper on it to one of 6 settings. The manual says that you will have the change acknowledged by one wipe of the wipers. Since I had the retrofit done, it takes a whole lot of rain to get my wipers to wipe making this feature virtually worthless. I tried increasing the sensitivity by turning the knob and got no change and no confirmatory wipe. I had my car into the dealer today for the seat recall and asked if the rain sensor retrofit was set up / installed correctly. The tech came back and stated the sensitivity function only works on the factory installed and not on the retrofit because it has a different controller. From anyone else that has the rain sensor retrofit is this true? Last edited by firewired on 05-23-2004 at 01:24 AM
  3. Update: Loren, I believe the information you have concerning the retro-fit is incorrect: 1. The relay does not have an adjustment screw (I had Sunset order a new one from Porsche and it arrived looking exactly like mine). 2. The dash switch for the intermittent wiper does not work for the retro-fit sensor. I called Gert at Carnevale and he confirmed this. This means that you cannot vary the speed or sensitivity for intermittent wiping. I guess that makes the after market solution a good deal less attractive. Please let me know if anyone has more information on this. Unfortunately I cannot just swap the relay for the factory unit, because the wiring is different.
  4. Condensation--nothing to worry about. Is this your first car with A/C?
  5. Loren, the part number you list above seems to be for the factory relay. This would not work with my aftermarket kit. After speaking to Gert and others, it appears that the OEM installed rain sensor has its speed control in the unique steering wheel stalk--which means that the dash control knob is not functional. Can someone confirm this who has the factory option? I asked Sunset to order another kit and this way I should find out if the new relay has the adjustment screw (in which case I will make the swap). Never a dull moment...
  6. Post the part number (on yours) and I'll see if it recommends the newer one in the parts list. Either way I think the newer one will work. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Interesting--the kit is made by AWS and has a sticker with the correct Porsche part number 996 612 981 00. The relay itself, however, has no Porsche numbers, only AWS 12. The TSB only refers to the kit number above. I guess I'll call Sunset and see what they say. Do you have a number for the later relay? Anyone else with a similar issue? Thanks.
  7. 1. Djantlive: Unless you were joking--this mod adds zero weight; the relay is actually smaller than the factory unit it replaces, and that should cancel the "weight" (less than 1/2 ounce) of the sensor and cable. 2. Loren/Toolpants: I have a funny feeling my older relay (without the adjustment screw) does not interact with the dash control. I've tried various settings for sensitivity/speed and there seems to be no difference. What are the chances I could substitute the newer relay?
  8. Follow-up: I installed the rain sensor last night. Piece of cake, especially when looking at the TSB mentioned above and with helpful comments from Loren. The only slight difficulty was hiding the wire behind the A-pillar. I had to unscrew the visor mount and pull the cover off the first snap. Loren, I must have an earlier version of the relay, because it does not have an adjustment screw. I shouldn't complain because Sunset got me a really good price compared to Brandywine ($180 vs.$300)! I highly recommend this for any 996 delivered without rain sensor--it is a great convenience and brings the car in line with most other high-end cars on the market.
  9. Thanks Loren--Can you squeeze the wire under the A pillar, or does it have to be removed (how?), also, the TSB mentions removing the left A/C vent which holds the light switch. Is this necessary so that you can run the wire down to the fuse box?
  10. I know there is a previous thread and TSB 9212 but has anyone had personal experience with installing the rain sensor intermittent wiper switch including the wires and relay? How difficult is it? What happens to the original dash switch? I just ordered mine and would like to know what to expect. Thanks in advance.
  11. I took a ramp to my parking garage way too fast yesterday and hit an icy patch. Fortunately my right rear wheel hit a low curb and nothing else got damaged. However, the impact caused my rollbars to deploy. I have an '04 C4S cab with a hardtop. I followed the instructions in my owners manual and pushed the rollbars back in. Since none of the warning lights came on, my question is: should anything have to be checked? The car runs great, and I already ordered a replacement wheel (these were my winter rims with snow tires from Tirerack, so the 18x10 only cost $227). It could have been much worse!
  12. Having done this several times, I would recommend an alternative method: get a small torx screwdriver, preferably one with a right angle attachment, and remove the 8 - 10 small screws holding the lid in place. It is very simple, except for the inner-most screw which takes a bit of patience to remove. I have done both sides in less than a half hour.
  13. Usually these are attached with 3M double sided tape or silicone glue. I would try using a hairdryer to warm everything up and then slide dental floss behind them and move it up and down. That should work.
  14. I am intrigued by the sequential shifter someone installed in a 6 speed. I did a little research and found that Cartronic is the manufacturer. Has anyone tried it, and how much did it cost? There seem to be several versions. Since you still use the clutch, is it worth giving up the ability to skip gears?
  15. My car has a black anchor which goes in the opening in the bumper--it expands once the screw is inserted. I'm on my second one already, as my front plate got hit by a piece of tire retread on the NJ turnpike at 80 mph. which ripped the license plate and it's bracket off the car--that's why I needed a larger screw to hold everything in place...
  16. I've had the same experience. I found that a thicker and longer screw solved the problem.
  17. Check this thread http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3787 B&M SSK Installed--a few questions BTW I just spoke to Porsche service, and they tell me that the light on the dash will come on, but that the C4S has such high limits that it would take rather extreme situations (such as tracking the car and drifting) before the PSM kicks in. That seems to answer my question, especially since the tech was speaking from experience with his C4S.
  18. That's what I thought--as it turns out my MY '04 C4S cab does have PSM and LSD (option 220) as a factory option--see a previous post where Loren discovered this. Highexplosive--your experience caused me to post this thread, and seems to bear out my observation that there is no indication on the dash to alert me to the PSM kicking in. I wonder if there has been a change in the software?
  19. Good idea! I just made a new donation as well. You guys are a great resource.
  20. I know there is a yellow light which warns when the PSM is off. Is this supposed to flash when the PSM engages? Mine never has, and I'm sure I've been in slippery conditions when some electronic override took place...(I also have LSD)
  21. This may be a dumb question, but is there a way to tell if PSM is kicking in? On all my other cars (BMW, M-Benz) the orange indicator in the dash display lights up when the electronics kick in. So far, I either have not had it activated (which I doubt) or there is no sign to confirm that it has interfered.
  22. There is a more elegant solution. I have full graphite leather as well. Someone is selling silver stickers on Ebay which cover the airbag label completely, and look great. I remember a thread several months ago with pictures. I did it, and it was a lot of bang for 10 bucks.
  23. Count yourself lucky that you dodged the RMS bullett. I trust they know whether it is RMS or not. Since PAG pays for the repair, there is no reason to doubt their diagnosis. The excessive oil consumption (and I think it is) may well have been caused by the filler tube leak. My '04 C4S used a quart in the first 1500 miles during breakin, but has not required any additional oil from 2500 to 7000 miles.
  24. I found the problem--In Toolpant's picture you can see that the black plug (which I have) fits into the white sleeve inside the black ring end of the left cable. I had mounted the cable end 180 degrees the wrong way, so that the white part faced against the outside gear housing. That way the black plug could not lock the cable in place, and it kept slipping off (It fell off on my way home tonight and I had no reverse and weird shift linkage!). When I finally got home and took everything apart, I figured it out, and it works! The cable can only be attached in this way, so you have to be careful to have the white liner face out before you push the plug in--it then locks in place, and requires some force to snap off. Thanks for all the help--I'm sure this will help the next guy....
