  1. Loren/Toolpants: I'm about to buy a used hard top for my '04 C4S cab, and I ordered the special handle since the seller lost it. But I also believe I need the two "protection covers" (part "J" on page 156 of the owner's manual) which slip into the holes at the back of the car in place of plastic covers "C". The parts people quoted me a ridiculous price (113.00) for part numbers 996 555 341 01 C 07 (left) and 342 01 C 07 (right). I think they have the wrong part. Can you help? Thanks.
  2. Not really--in those days I was not aware of the resources we have today, and I was told that the entire roof mechanism would have had to be disassembled, without a guarantee that the rattles would not return at some future date. I finally got disgusted and sold the car. Two years later I traded a 996 coupe for another 993 Targa, and had a similar experience. (Don't ask why I went back to the same model a second time, but the fact that the 996 was a Tip had something to do with it.) My C4S is totally tight and rattle-free, and the best Porsche I'v ever owned (no.8).
  3. I too own a new C4S. (It happens to be a cab) Do NOT accept your dealer's attitude--they have to fix it, if they can recreate the problem (and it appears they did). There is nothing more annoying than rattles in a car, especially a very expensive, brand new one. When I had a rattle in my convertible top, thankfully this forum had an immediate fix. I hope you get some help from the other members such as Toolpants. I'm sure there is a simple explanation--I would definitely take it up with PCNA. (BTW, I have twice sold 993 Targas because they could not get rid of rattles). Good luck!
  4. I'm sorry to disappoint, but since I came to my senses and replaced the "wood" with my original aluminum pieces (and the blue console) the only thing I'm selling is the wood look-alike stuff. It is listed on Ebay. I appreciate the interest.
  5. Their website is http://www.classictrimwtp.com/index.html The contact person is Keiron at kng0309@aol.com . What I found interesting is their ability to also create carbon fiber and aluminum look at competitive prices. I have no relationship with this company, but my experience was very favorable.
  6. I have to admit that I only lived with the "wood" trim pieces for 24 hours. I just hated the contrast with my grey leather. It is amazing how a rear console replacement which took over 1 hour the first time could be swapped out in 15 minutes by the third time! Here is what I'm (happily) back to:
  7. Well, I must have too much time on my hands! Since upgrading the interior of my '04 C4S Cab with various aluminum look parts and adding a rear center console in midnight blue several months ago, I discovered a place in Florida which creates high quality wood (look) interior modifications. Since I still had all the original (plastic or leather-covered) parts for my car, I decided to take a chance on having them turned into bird's eye maple (similar to the light wood option from Porsche). Now that it's all done, I'm on the fence. The quality of the finish is exceptional, and there is a marine-grade clear coat. The cost was quite reasonable. What do you guys think?
  8. Don, if I can find one at the right price I will. I've started to call around. I know I can have it painted to match, but I want a grey interior. I would also prefer to pick one up within driving distance, as shipping and crating will add too much to the cost.
  9. On a beautiful fall day I washed my '04 C4S Cab and rejexed it for the last time before snow and sleet. Now I'm ready for my new rims and snow tires to see how this puppy goes in Northeast winters....
  10. I don't know how you get that kind of mileage; my '04 C4S cab gets only about 220 miles per tankful, averaging 16.5 mpg at best. I know the C4S tank hold a little less gas than the regular 996, but if I were you I wouldn't worry too much about the interim displays, as long as you know how much fuel is left.
  11. Absame--could you tell me how much the paint job cost? I'm thinking about buying a used hard top, too, but my color (midnight blue) is unlikely to come up. Thanks
  12. I just replaced my factory horn with the Griots Italian horn. It cost 40 bucks--here's the link http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?&SKU=77839 It was not a simple installation, as you have to remove the front wheels and bumper, but I got done in little over an hour. You need to clip off the Porsche connector and replace it with two female clips, but the rest is simple. The sound is amazing and will keep you out of trouble.
  13. I had the same problem last week--however, I managed to clean the dials by scrubbing them with a fine metal polish (I used Flitz, but I think any paste like silver polish should work). Don't give up yet, you might be able to save your dials!
  14. Thanks--how hard is it to remove that unit temporarily?
  15. Yes--the unit on the left; I don't suppose it is possible to order just the faceplate in silver (even if you don't mind the high price, you probably need a VIN number for the car, and have to wait a long time).
  16. Loren/Tool Pants: Is there a way to snap off the black plastic surround on the A/C climate control face? I don't mean the rectangle around the outside bordering the center console horse shoe. The large aluminum package makes an all silver faceplate, and I wondered if it is possible to re-create that look by painting the surround facia (assuming it is removable). (I have an '04 C4S cab). On another note, following another member's post, I ordered a terrific (loud!) horn from Griot's and installed it last weekend. What a difference! I highly recommend this to anyone who has had problems with other drivers-especially trucks-ignoring the feeble Porsche horn. I did have to remove the front wheels and bumper, but the rest was easy.
  17. For what it's worth, my '04 C4S Cab had a disconnected washer hose on my way home from the dealer (brand new on day one!). I was able to reconnect it from behind the battery compartment, and it's been fine since.
  18. I'm starting to plan for the winter season, and I definitely want snow tires for my '04 C4S Cab after reading various posts on this board. Last fall I got a set of rims and tires for my 745Li and it was well worth the expense. Would it be foolish to buy tires only and have them installed on my factory rims for the season? I think a new set of rims in the appropriate size and quality for my Porsche will set me back a lot of money (The complete set with tires for my BMW only cost 1700.00). Any suggestions would be welcome.
  19. My '04 C 4 S Cab does the same--I think it's "standard"....
  20. V.A.T. is always deducted for export orders. You will not have to pay it if it is shipped to the US.
  21. Thanks for the helpful comments. I would just like to follow up: the tire was replaced, and after careful inspection I determined that there was no damage to the car or rim. I must confess that I am very impressed by the quality of the original tire (Michelin Sport Pilot 295/30/ZR18). It took the installer an hour to carefully remove what was left of the steel and rubber surrounding the edge of my rim which had remained in place. Incidentally, even as the tire disintegrated, the car tracked perfectly straight with no loss of control--most likely helped by the PSM and 4 wheel drive software.
  22. I just had my rear tire self-destruct. I must have hit a pothole going 70-80mph last night in my '04 C4S Cab. The ride started to feel harsh, and I saw blue smoke out my rear view mirror. At first, I thought I had engine trouble, but all indicators (engine temp, oil pressure etc.) were fine. Luckily, I was able to slow down and pull over in heavy traffic (4 lanes). The brakes hardly worked, so I used the hand brake. By now, the entire tire had come off and was in the middle of the expressway. What seems incredible to me (having had several previous tire mishaps) is the fact that the rim appears totally undamaged. There remains a buffer of about 1-2 inches of rubber along each edge where the rim meets the road, and this seems to have protected the wheel from damage. I also expected some collateral damage from the tire as it flew of the wheel, but a superficial inspection shows nothing unusual. I called Porsche Roadside assistance for a tow, because I didn't want to use the spare and wasn't sure about the condition of my car--they showed up in 45 minutes, and I was able to drive the car up the flatbed myself. I will let you know if there is a post-script. BTW, the 295/30/VR18 Michelin Sport Pilot is going to set me back around $400.00--I only hope I don't also need a new rim!
  23. A question for Tool Pants/Loren: is this shifter easier (or the same) to install as the B&M instructions for the above (via rear center console removal, not from underneath)?
  24. I don't know about the $250.00 price. I just had mine replaced ('04 C 4 S Cab) and it cost $960.00. It came out perfect (my car only 800 miles on it when a rock cracked the glass).
  25. I found it on Ebay. The tips came with the car (OEM).
