  1. Rodger and Toolspants, thanks for the replies. I successfully removed the alternator with a simple little hint from Butch199. There is a bushing on the rear-right side of the alternator lug that needs to be tapped back a couple mm. I assume when the bolt is tightened, it draws it forward just enough that the alternator will not rotate clockwise which needs to be done to remove. Now that the alternator is out, I replaced the air cut-off valve (993-113-245-01) which was bad and the electric change-over valve (not sure it was bad, but for $28 I will replace anyway). Should be able to get it back together tonight, and hopefully, the CEL will be cleared for good. ps. not an easy job. Sounds simple on paper, but I have the torn-up knuckles and fingers to prove otherwise.
  2. Thanks guys !! It's done !! The alternator was out, I accessed the tubes behind it. I had to use a ton of WD40, a few cuts & bruises on my hands, a jammed finger, a ton of pushing, shoving, pulling, mallet hits, using screw drivers as levels etc to get the generator out. Nasty one - but done with no damage to the precious alternator (or around). At some point I felt the right side was probably welded in my case !! I'm going to write a little DIY soon - taken snaps just for that. Did you ever write any instructions on the alternator removal? I'm having the same problem on my Boxster. I can not get the right bracket to budge. Thanks.
  3. Any advice you can give me on removing the alternator in my Boxster. I have the two bolts removed that attached the alternator to the engine, but the alternator won't budge. It looks like it needs to be rotated clockwise a little before it will slide out, but I can not get it to rotate. Where there instructions listed on how to remove the alternator, because I could not find any? Thanks.
  4. Can anyone help me with detailed instructions on removeing the alternator in a 986? I have the rear access panel off, and the two bolts attaching the alternator removed, but I can not remove the alternator. I can barely move the alternator at all. There must be another step I am missing. It looks like I need to rotate the alternator such that the lugs where the bolts attached clear the lugs the bolts go through, but I can not rotate the alternator enough to clear the lugs. I'm about ready to put it back together and pay the price to have the dealer fix it, but I sure would like to get this done myself.
  5. Geoff, I know it's been a while since you did this project, but I am tackling this same repair, and I have a few questions. How did you get to the valves? Did you go in threw the firewall opening behind the seats which requires the alternator to be remove or did you go in from the top? If from the top, did you remove the air plentum to get to the valves? Thanks.
  6. Looking for instruction on how to remove the alternator in a 1999 986. My check engine light is on, and the codes indicate a back air change over valve or check valve. The instructions I am using refer to a DYI on removing the alternator (to get to the valves, but I can not seem to find the posting of those instructions. Thanks in advance for you help.
  7. I have a '99 Boxster with 49k where I just started seeing a few drops of oil under the engine. Nothing to be too concerned about, but I was wondering if this could be an RMS leak. What are the the signs of an RMS leak, and if it's only a few drops, should I even be concerned until it gets worse?
  8. How much brake fluid should I have for bleeding the brakes and clutch on my '99 5-speed Boxster? The manual states a capacity of .4 liters, but on one of the posts, it was stated that one should have 1 liter at a minimum. I have 1 liter, but I don't want to start the job and find that I do not have enough. Thanks.
  9. Its time to replace the front rotors on my '99 Boxster. Anyone have a recommendation on a set of replacement rotors, pads, and brake fluid? I do normal to work and pleasure driving, but no type of racing or Autocross. Thanks.
  10. Now that you have had the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S for a while, are you still pleased with them? I'm looking at a set for my Boxster which is consoderably different than the Corvette.
  11. Looking for the max mounting depth of the door speaker enclosure.
  12. Can someone recommend a good site to find Porsche Boxster Technical Service Bulletins? Thanks.
  13. Porsche dealer has informed me that the Boxster Tech Manual are not longer available through the dealership. They use to sell them for around $500. Found one site that is selling them for $2000 (ouch). Any suggestions on where to get a set of these manuals?
  14. Can the temperature display be enabled on a 2003 Boxster? A dealer has told my father that it can not be done, but I had it enabled by a dealer on my 1999 Boxster.
  15. I just purchaseda used 1999 Boxster which has a CDR-220 radio and CD player. The radio supports a security code that prevents the unit from functioning if power is removed (battery disconnected). Unfortunately, I did not received that security code with the car, and I do not know who the previous owner was. Is there a way to re-enable the radio without this security code after the battery has been disconnected? ps. The car has 4 slots in the dash which hold CDs. I had assumed they where for a CD-changer, but it appears that they are for CD storage only. Am I correct in this?
  16. I am having the same problem with my 1999 Boxster. Shop diagnosed it as a bad window regulator, and wants $580 to repair. Do you have any tips or suggestions for me because I am going to attempt replacing it on my own? I found a DYI on removing the door panel which was excellent.
