  1. Is there anyway NOT to use the sensors (and to not have the brake wear light on)? Not only do I not want to pay to replace them, but I feel like they are entirely pointless. It's not like I don't check my pad level every time I get gas. And the warning light always seems to like to turn on after washing my car (or exposing the sensor to a large amount of water some other way) Also, in case I do have to have the sensors, my warning light is coming on only after a pretty prolonged period of driving (15 miles/10-15 min) on or off the brakes. Is this normal? It always ends up being off again when I start my car, even if I shut off the car for a few seconds. Cost asside, how hard is it to replace the sensors? All it says above is: "Insert the warning contact wire and warning contacts." From looking at pictures of the cable it looks like it is a simple plug into one end and plug into the other. I don't really have the expertise to splice wires or anything crazy like that. And lastly: It looks like there are 3 OEM brands readily available: Textar, Pagid and Mintex. Is there a significant difference between the three? There is a significant price difference, which is why I ask. From what I've read Textar is the brand that Porsche currently uses.
  2. 6speedonline won't let me register for some stupid reason... So that spoiler is out of the question I guess... Haha. The lip and the side skirts however... Anyone else?
  3. How much were the individual parts and where'd you get it Midlifez? Does it auto go up and down still, or is it just like that? Any more pictures of it and the rest of your car, I really like the look of it, not huge GT3 wing (which looks nice, but isn't for me on a street car) and not one of the whale tails, which isn't to my taste. I'd like a front lip too, if anyone knows of a company that makes one, that would be great, otherwise I'll have to wait to do the whole front bumper piece. Which again I will likely follow your car again midlifez, it looks very nice.
  4. Carrera, or Carrera 4... Or just Porsche (and I make sure to correct those who say poorsh, and correct them to poorsha)... It says all those on my car, anything else is out of the question, aside from C4 to those in the know.
  5. So I'm thinking about eventually replacing my rear spoiler on my '99 996, especially since no one can figure out why it goes up at 50 and down at 20 instead of the factory settings. Either a GT3/GT2/Turbo replica or maybe something else that looks good. Any opinions on which one looks best (and still performs well, of course) and recommendations on where to get them? Also, for those who have done it either A ) How hard is it to do or B ) How much did it cost to have someone do it for you? Other than maybe some carbon fiber interior trim and a full clearbra for the front, that's all I have planned for the near future.
  6. Where do you get an Orange Cap? BTW now that I finally have one ('99 Carrera 4, Glacier White) I take back what I said about the shifter... My ONLY complaint about the car was the becker, which got replaced right after buying the car with an Alpine x001 Ipod Deck... The Ipod sits nicely where the CD storage tray used to be (the cd trays pop out of the frame). Other than that, got 45%/35% high quality F1 Ceramic tint. Then its just the light gray wheels on a white car that's left to bother me. So favorite mod for me is getting rid of the very ****ty factory deck/becker (the CD player freakin skips when I go over bumps...) Anyway, love the car, asside from the spoiler going up at 50 mph for no apparent reason (it definitly isn't a mechanical/electrical failure, and no one seems to know why else it would go up at 50 and down at 20 instead of 75 and 50 or whatever)
  7. Thanks guys. I forgot about the Porsche ~9 qt oil usage... Being 1 qt low/1 qt of a different kind of oil isn't quite as bad... (It does have a factory wet oil sump system built in, right? Or does it really just have a huge oil pan? Fastboy: It does say the weights, but I dunno about your manual but mine has about 15-20 different weights listed... Hence the question. So if I top it off (maybe not even all the way, just like half of what's missing...) with Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 10w30 it should be totally fine? I don't have time to go get 0w40 or even go get an oil change... Saturday I have time but not no shop is open by the time I have... Time Boston: If this is normal than I am 100% happy, and way past used to it... I did oil changes every 3000 miles on the Evo, and it would need at least 1 qt more between, sometimes 2... As a matter of fact, if it weren't for the fact that I have no idea what kind of oil is in it now I would already have topped it off.
  8. So I bought my car a few months ago and it is starting to get low on oil. So here's the question/concern: I never had this problem in the Evo because only Mobil 1 10w30 fully synthetic (w/ the green cap! haha) was supposed to be used, and was labeled on the oil cap... With this car, I have no idea what is in it. I'm almost 90% sure that its 10w30 only because at least 90% of the places around put that in the cars. And it needs probably about a quart of oil right now, and there's my first DE in it on Sunday... I have a big jug of 10w30 Mobil 1 fully synthetic from the Evo days (turbos + high altitude = oil loss, plus it was Mitsubishi quality)... If I use that will I have problems? I'd love for the answer to be that it'll be 100% fine, but I've heard/read that mixing everything but different brands can cause problems. What do you all think?
  9. I'm almost positive it isn't the engine case, its coming from up higher and a little bit too far forward from the engine (also a little too far forward from the coolant resevoir) I honestly think its just a hose line going from the resevoir up to the radiator in the front of the car. But it could be the tank if the tank is that far forward.
  10. I echo what you said about replacing the coolant tank. I didn't quite pay as much as you did for the repair ($700) propably because the shop was an independent shop. None the less still a nice chunk of change! I have '99 C4 6spd. I won't be paying it, the dealer I bought the car from will be paying to fix it but I have a 6spd as well. The issue cannot be changed at a dealer, I called both the nearest dealers and both say that it is impossible for the spoiler to be changed.
  11. Well I don't know if any of you have seen me post on here before, I had asked a few questions before purchasing a car and finally found the perfect one. '99 Carrera 4 in Glacier White with only 33k miles on it, in perfect condition... It is very gorgeous and I'm happy to be the new owner. I do have a question though: Does anyone know why the spoiler would go up at 50mph and down at 20 mph? esp. anything aftermarket or tuning system-wise that could change that? I was told the dealers could change that on the ECU but now the two nearest dealers tell me otherwise... So... Any ideas? Also, my coolant is leaking super duper slowly (we're talking the resevoir is empty after about a week), I'm pretty sure the leak is right by the rear driver's side wheel... Any rough guesses as to what it could be?
  12. Well, if they don't follow their claim, I get my money back, so easy enough! Guarentees rock! Anyway, maybe its just because I'm coming from the less than less than perfect Evo 8 interior but other than the shifter feeling like a Jeep Wrangler shifter, I had no complaints. I say had, because now I really like the colored crest on the wheel and your shift knob. Nav is already planned and picked out. The stock Bose stereo will be plenty for me otherwise for quite sometime, and I won't be getting a subwoofer probably at all, unless I get two 8s. Clear side markers are a must depending on the color C2 I end up in for sure. The non-smoker kit is cool, but I don't know how much it is worth it at this point, though I'm sure I'll discover its value once I have a 996, since everyone seems to love it. After Nav and a short-shifter kit the next important thing (Tint will be very first, like, day of getting the car) will be new wheels. Likely Enkei NTO3+Ms since they're extremely light but also extremely sturdy and strong. Oh, and the automatic spoiler is too **** awesome (and really, a large part of the car's appeal for me, in all honestly) that I wouldn't change it for anything other than maybe the new 997's automatic spoiler on the Turbo. (At least, I think it is the standard one on the 997 Turbos)
  13. I didn't say to the wheels, Dynos all vary too much for me to say what I'd want to the wheels... But here: I want to gain 30 to 40hp to go from the factory 300ish to 330ish. Does that make it better? I already know I can gain 23 from the K&N Intake, otherwise they'll pay me for the intake. I'm not going crazy and I'm sure not saving up for a TT only because it would be double the money, and currently totally not worth it. Plus, I'd rather save for a GT3 if I was aiming that high. If its really that hard to pull 30 hp (I find all those mods getting you just 30hp to be very odd, but maybe the Porsche engine just doesn't respond well at all) then I probably won't do anything more than the intake and some mufflers and, of course, the short shifter. If I wanted to go crazy, I'd keep my Evo.
  14. I looked at Sharkwerks... Alls I can say is ****... I thought paying 1500 for a hp gain was a lot. Haha, oh well. Anyway, continuing on here, besides doing a short throw I want a bit of a bump in power without sacrificing reliability/daily-drivablity or my left nut... So what's everyone's thoughts as far as best mods for non-turbos that don't cost an arm, a tooth, and 5 legs? The GIAC tune is uber expensive, the Evo intake isn't bad at ~500 but K&N guarentee's a hp gain of like 22 while Evo only say's they'll get around 10-12 on Sharkwerks' page. The exhausts and mufflers are all crazy expensive but after doing searching I've found that even muffler changes are adding 10-20 hp. If I can put down around 330-340 hp I'll be totally satisfied, I just want to be as fast as my Evo 8 was, and I figure with 360 and an extra 200 lbs it'll be as fast as a C2 with 330-340.
  15. Just me searching online, B&M was where I found the price on their shifter. Shopping around is hard when I don't know where to go, that's why I asked. I will not be doing much cosmetic or performance. Right now I'm trying to get out of my Evo and I already know what a pain all that can be (value lost of modifications, even performance ones). However it is very nice to have someone say "rice is bad" in a mature way, so I'm already pleased to be (hopefully soon...) a Porsche owner. Short shifter and tint will be the very first things, no offense to people who like the regular shifter, but a 70k sports car shouldn't have such a weak feeling shifter. Next will be paying off the 15-20k I will owe on the car as fast as possible. Then maybe intake, exhaust, some sort of chip/tune (dunno what it is in the 996 world), clear side blinkers, nav/bluetooth. If, after all that, I decide to spend a little more, I might look into suspension and another set of wheels (Likely some TE37 Volks, a friend of mine has a 996 turbo with them and it is beautiful), but, with the luck I've had with aftermarket suspension on both the S2k and the Evo I will likely stick with the factory suspension for quite awhile, especially since the reason I'm getting out of the Evo is to get away from a track hound and into something civil enough to drive around town (however, recommendations on suspension are taken as well ;) ). What's the RSS Plenum, and do mufflers really help a lot, or do they just make it sound cool (as they typically do in most vehicles)?
  16. Okay, my particular item/s are power enhancing things. Exhaust, intake, chip/tune, etc. Where to? B&M I know is a great shifter, I'll go check bumperplugs.com right now, as well as Sharkworks, thanks for the help! Edit: What is Sharkworks website? I did sharkworks.com, .net, and did a search for Sharkworks and Sharkworks Porsche on Google. All I got were errors or RennTech forums.
  17. This is all cool and what not... But how much and where do we find things? The other day I was searching around and I found K&N's intake system and a 4000 dollar exhaust system. B&Ms short shifter is like 500 dollars. Other than body upgrades I haven't found a thing. Not even the clear side blinkers.
  18. Its like 20 bucks more a month than the Evo (Far worth it, for sure, just cancel my never used stupid World of Warcraft account and that pays for it). I test drove it and looked at it on Friday and it is gorgeous and certainly fun to drive but the kid that was supposed to be buying my car on Saturday backed out because he couldn't arrange the financing or something stupid... My only complaints about the car: A) The shifter is too freaking smooth, haha, I can't tell when I'm in gear and when I"m not, but that's just me being used to rough sports cars and B) His 6 year old son had just helped him shine the tires, and applied a little too much to some parts of the tread, so the car had a hard time stopping (but again, from driving so many cars on track I could tell it wanted to stop, it just didn't quite have the traction, a very odd feeling in the rear-engine C4). And DaveMo, I PM'd you back, if you want to sell it to me for sub 40k, then we can talk ;) Otherwise, I'd like to try to stay local.
  19. Thanks guys... Seen the carfax for it (the owner has one, and yes, just to be sure I matched the vins and made sure the date was recent) and it shows totally clean. It has been dented or in some sort of accident because it has been repainted in one spot. The owner said he had it appraised and they said it had frame damage though two different Porsche places here say that it is totally fine other than the paint job. (As a side note... they tried to tell me one place that my Evo had frame damage though it simply had a dent in the sub-frame... stupid dealers and their low-ball trade-in scams). I'm excited, it already has nav/bluetooth/ipod/dvd built in the dash and comes with a matching hard top... Plus if I get the Porsche instead of the Acura TL-S I'll still be able to track it once in awhile and not feel like an idiot.
  20. First and foremost, its used, so what should I look for? Second, are there any major problems or even minor ones that occur in a lot of '02 C4s? The RMS (I think that's what it's called) and the clutch got replaced just 5,000 miles ago on the car. Third, how's your insurance? My only concern with buying a Porsche is the insurance costs, while I haven't yet looked much and I hate to assume... But my guess is that this car will cost more in insurance than my Evo, which already costs an arm and a leg... While I know I need to just ask my insurance agent to know for sure, I have an idea on Evo insurance costs so if I can get a general idea on these it'd be great. And just because this emote is awesome: :renntech:
