  1. I don't think the Boxster is "that unreliable". I do however like to be prepared. As to the weight I'm proposing to carry, it's much less than a 1/2- to 1/4 of a fully loaded suitcase. Since i've owned the car, I've done the poly-rib belt, new front brakes, oil change, air filter, etc............. so I'm fairly comfortable doing repairs. My car is a 97 (soon to be 11 years old), with which I have exactly two months experience, and fewer miles than I'm taking on this trip. So, forgive me for sounding paraniod, but I'm not being unrealistic IMHO. Been there, done that, been stranded! I don't want to call the "nearest dealer" and be charged $1000 for something I can address for $25.......... This makes sense to me, maybe not to all.
  2. I'm a fairly new 986 owner and plan to drive my car to Florida for Thanksgiving (+/- 1600 mi's). Trying to put together some tools to carry in the trunk and asking for what you'd add to the list, and more importantly....why? Anyway, here's what I have so far: Bentley Fuses Multi-Meter Hex Sockets Star Sockets Ratchets - Extensions Hammer Open End Wrenches Wire Cutter - Wire Door Panel Tool (works great on convertible top ball ends) Torque Wrench Screw Drivers (offset also) Knife Pliers (straight, channel locks) Got what I consider to be the almost "perfect" bag to carry them.......... http://www.mytoolstore.com/klein/5200-15.html
  3. Is this recommended as a "proactive" project? On other words will all 986 tanks fail, just a matter of time? Is this issue exclusive to any particular years, or all years? FWIW: I have a 97
  4. Got a road trip coming up......Thanksgiving. Been trying to run my GPS or Escort from the lighter and have noticed the diameter is larger than on my other cars and the plugs fall out after a very short time. Bought one of those 2 to 1 adaptors and it also falls out after a few minor bumps. I know I got several of those "sleeve" enlargers that came with a few items designed to plug into the lighter, but I sure don't know where any of them reside today. What have you folks done? Thanks, Tim
  5. Not sure if there are two microswitches or if the inside and outside handle "trip" the same switch. Anyway I got this diagram somewhere (can't recall) and if I had the second page I'd have the switch part number. Anyone recognize the source of this?
  6. So your the guy that fixed the A10s to lock on to us brits in the tanks. Hope the door lock is more sucessful Glyn :D Not me, I did the inertial and radar navigation. Now with GPS all that stuff is in the trash can. My Garmin I bought for <$400 does a better job than what the USAF had in the mid 70's which cost them about 1 mil a copy. Ain't progress grand?
  7. Thanks for the replies.......... Does anyone know if this switch is tripped when the door is unlatched and then released when the door closes. This sounds like the most logical scenario, unless there's a second switch. I used to repair the elctronics on A10's and F15's, so I can't see this being a huge challenge. However we had REALLY good manuals! Looks like I'll need to take the door apart soon......... Tim
  8. I've read a few threads about this problem but my symptoms are a little different so here goes......... When I open the Driver door the window will drop the 13mm (per Bentley) and then IMMEDIATELY go back up. The Bentley manual is woefully inadequate on helping with this. First let me stop anyone who will say "you need to replace the regulator", don't think so. Why? Well the windows drop the appropriate amount when disengaging the top, they both also go up and down just fine. The regulator is doing what it's being "told" to do, when it's told to do it. In the Bentley this 13mm drop is referred to as "comfort open" & "comfort close" Here's what I'm thinking......... The computer is being told the door is opening so it drops the window. Then the computer is being told the door is closed so it raises the window immediately. What I can't figure out (yet) is what tells the computer this. Are there tiny switches in the latch mechanism and one of them is sticking? I will solve this, but who knows how much time it will take. Anyone with a little more knowledge in this area who can help? Thanks, Tim FWIW: 97 Boxster
  9. Well said, I saw a LOT of these. One dealer called me back about two S's he had that were rough. I told him that the PO's either did not care about the cars or didn't have the money to take care of them, but neither situation held any appeal for me. I look at it this way. A highly optioned car is nice but more expensive. If it's not clean then I have to spend even more money to bring it to my standards (which are pretty high). I don't need memory seats, I can buy bigger wheels and even Porsche's "best" stereo......I will replace. I'm kind of an audio nut and like my sounds full range and distortion free. Almost have never heard this in a factory system. I'm sure the Mark Levinson in the Lexus would be one exception or maybe the Harmon Kardon systems (can't remember who's using them). It's gotta be clean, to get my green!
  10. Thanks everyone............. One quick question, here in Virginia we have front license plates mandatory. My local dealer (#$%@^@*'n thieves), wants $50 for the bracket, mount, bolts....etc Anyone know of a reasonably priced alternative? Tim
  11. mikefocke...... Thanks, I knew it was a stripper and I'm okay with that. Actually chose this one over an 01 with $11,300+ of options. Why? Because this one is darn near perfect! Any help on that paint code?
  12. Chris_in_NH, Thanks for the info. I've been to the sites you listed before I opened this thread and they're all excellent sources. I've been lurking here (and elsewhere) awhile now. I agree on the wheels, but that will have to wait for a little time to pass. Looked at an 01 with the 18" sport wheels and it drove great. Should for a $4100+ option! As for the "lots" of options you mention, in my case I don't think so. Also the 986faq doesn't seem to have them all. And I can't find the paint code listed anywhere either. Here's a shot of my sticker, any help appreciated. Paint code: L84S????? The only option I know for sure is the C02 = US Emissions Tim Also the PM offer....much appreciated!
  13. Here's the car I decided to buy. Looked all over about a 150 mile radius from home. Found lots of curb rash, split leather, door dings, wreck repairs...etc.... Highly optioned cars, S models, non S, looked at up to year 93 models (budget). Found this cherry in my backyard! 97 two owner, 42K miles (4200/year), two options, 16" rims and metallic paint. This car truly looks like it's been off the showroom for 3 ~ 4 months. Always garage kept and purrs like a kitten. It goes in for the PPI Wednesday and then it'll be mine unless they find something significant. My advice to all looking, don't give up and don't settle, keep going they're out there!
  14. I know on the new Boxsters the passenger seat is "weight sensitive" and bypassing the airbag (if possible) is a different procedure than on older models. On the older models there is an install kit for defeating the passenger airbag. My question is this: What year did the "weight sensitive" passenger seat begin? 2004? I've got this system (weight sensitive) on my work car and with a full briefcase on the seat, when I hit a bump the weight activates the airbag. My briefcase weighs less than my 10 year-old son so I can't have that happening.
