  1. OK, I just noticed tonight that at idle which goes away immediately as RPM's/oil pressure increase. It sounds like one lifter is ticking on the passenger side- not catastrophically loud, but loud enough- especially if you are standing on the passenger side. It is barely audible from the drivers side. Anyway, when I first heard the tick, it reminded me of all my other OHC motors that had lifter tick where a good "cleaning" with Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF mixed in with the oil for a few hundred miles solved it but wanted to ask those who have been here longer and have more Porsche experience than myself. I have searched here and have read everything from "oh my god, it's going to blow up shortly" to "just run thicker oil and it'll be fine". Has a general consensus ever been made as to the seriousness of this? The car has 74k on it and certainly isn't the first ticking lifter I have ever heard and most of them are a non-issue other than some noise, so it didn't concern me until I read some of the posts here. Joe
  2. I am amazed at the amount of info on this board! Everything you need to own and maintain this thing :). I just wish there were more serious modders for me to learn from without breaking stuff myself ;). Anyway, I will certainly keep you guys posted about whatever I do. As of right this second, I really have a sour taste about modding it- just got my GTO back together yesterday, took it out last night and on the way home, my $1400 twin disk clutch with 3000 miles on it started slipping in 4th- I'm furious. Right now, I don't want to mod anything, just drive the thing and enjoy it lol. Joe
  3. Wow, that car is a work of art. Thanks for the info, I'm still not sure if I want to bother trying or not. This car is new to me, so I'm not too familiar with the ins and outs yet and don' know of any message boards aside from this one- it's going to be a learning experience for me if I do anything with it, that's for sure. Before I do anything, the car has some other minor issues that need to be worked out and some paint work done. I bought it from a used car lot for a steal of a price, but you can tell it's been around the block a few times. It's going to take some work to get it where I want it prior to even starting any mods. It is one of those "looks great from 5' away" cars. It isn't in too bad of shape, just has had some shoddy paint work done in the past and my winter project is more than likely going to consist of disassembling the car, stripping it, doing whatever body work is necessary and respraying it. Still undecided if I am staying with the silver or doing something custom since it isn't going to be original anymore anyway. Decisions, decisions.... Joe
  4. I just like modding things, I always have. But you're right- one screw up and it's done. The GTO is~11:1 stock also and I have run up to 14 psi on a stock motor, but tuning with that car is easy with all the tuning software available for the LSx motors. I didn't know if there was anything similar to HP Tuners (www.hptuners.com if you are interested at all) for the Porsche or not. Or if there is something known about them like "the case flexes too much on the NA motors with boost" or "the heads tend to lift under boost and blow gaskets"- something common that I just haven't been around long enough to know (all cars have their own issues when modding). It just seems that a majority of Porsche owners just leave it alone or have one of the few shops do it for them, so the knowledge isn't as public as it is with other cars apparently :(. Oh well. Thanks guys! Joe
  5. Thanks, I'm aware of that. That's why I am wondering what the compression ratio of the NA motor is and if anyone has had any luck adding a turbo to one. I have seen a few with superchargers, so I know they'll handle some boost. I just need specs and want to know if anyone has done it here to know what to look out for when boosting this motor. Thank again though. Joe
  6. Has anyone here turboed a non-turbo 3.4 996? I am thinking of fabbing up a single turbo setup for the car, it will be extremely easy, but just curious how the motor holds up to boost. I can't find the compression ratio anywhere for this car, maybe I'm not looking in the right places, I dunno. I was thinking I should be able to get away with ~7psi or so fairly easily on the stock motor- as long as the motors are relatively strong. It would not be my first NA to turbo conversion by a long shot, but I am not familiar with the Porsche motor and tuning to know what hurdles lie ahead. Thanks in advance. Joe
  7. This is older, but I just came across it searching for anyone who uses nitrous on the 996. I was debating it also, but to me nitrous is great for 1/4 cars are a quick blast here and there. I have used it on numerous cars in the past- even ran a 150 shot on a base 04 Crossfire :), but feel a car like the 911 needs something that is there all the time to really enjoy it- like a turbo or supercharger. The kits are insanely priced though, so if I do anything, I would fab up a single turbo kit and have it tuned. Anyway, the main reason I was replying was in response to the Nitto sponsored race car- it was Eddie Bello from Bellotech. That car was a brutal 1/4 mile contender and was known for standing straight up on the rear bumper- I was told most of the pics of it in the air were taken on the 1-2 shift :). Joe
  8. OK, checked all the fuses and one was blown, I'm assuming it is the horn fuse as now I can hear the horn relay click when I push the button, but still no horns. I'll have to check them for power next. Is there an access panel to them with the bumper cover on, or do I have to remove it? I just thought of something else- my remote on the key does not work, the light on the remote comes on but the car does not lock/unlock. Is there a programming procedure I can do myself, or is it dealer only? Joe
  9. Wow, thank you for the fast reply! It is a C2- sorry, forgot to mention that. As for fuses, I have to get out there and just hit them with my test light, but it is too hot right now for me to want to bother. I don't have the manual to show me specific fuse locations, so I have to check them all. Also, I am pretty ignorant on Porsche's at the moment- what is the DME control module :)? I can do anything needed, just don't know the "lingo" yet. Thanks again. edit- is the pressure sensor harness accessible with the tank still in the car? Joe
  10. Hello guys (and gals?), first post here. I just picked up a 99 996 in need of some minor TLC (paint work and a good detailing!!) and was wondering if anyone has any answers or can point me in the right direction. The problems I am looking for advice on are- the fuel gauge is on E with the light flashing regardless of level, I am getting a code P0453 (evap high), the horn does not work and when I start the car, the light showing the hatch (wing?) with a down arrow comes on for a little while and I don't know if this is normal or not. I have read that the 99's have issues with the fuel sender due to the float hitting the fuel hose in the tank and was wondering if that was it, but before I take it all apart I wanted to see if anyone more experienced in this car than I would think that maybe the fuel gauge and the P0453 are related and/or common- like maybe a wire chafing issue or something? The horn, I do not hear a relay click when I hit the button, but haven't looked much further than that at it. I want to check the fuses, but it is too darn hot out there right now to sit there with my test light checking them all and the manuals are missing from the car, so I can't just look up the fuse and check the one :(. Also, the previous owner or the dealer I got the car from pulled the MIL bulb out (I guess it is *their* way of fixing things :)), how do I get the cluster apart to replace it? Lastly, are there any good sources for used parts for these cars for reasonable prices? I just want to make a list of suppliers should I need anything. Thanks in advance! Joe
