  1. Hello. My last three cars (C43 AMG, Boxster, Carrera) have had Continental SportContact2 tires. They are just fine for any reasonably sane speeds on public roads, wet or dry.
  2. I am still on my 7th. Car hasnt been out much this year due to me working too hard :( But its going in to have the new seal fitted within the next month.......by my independent of course! Hi, Scouser. Is the 7th the GT3 Motorsport seal installed backwards that you previously wrote was the end-all solution? Thanks.
  3. From the magazine "Jon Oakley, states that Carreras leave the factory with the front wheels set to toe-out to induce understeer. Oakley resets the wheels to be dead parallel." The article is confusing as to his discussion being applicable to a C2 or a C4.
  4. Hi, all. I have a question for the group concerning another approach to eliminating understeer. The July 2006 issue of Total 911 has an article on trackdays. In this article a driving instructor, Jon Oakley, states that Carreras leave the factory with the front wheels set to toe-out to induce understeer. Oakley resets the wheels to be dead parallel. This gives the Carrera "... better turn-in and better front-end grip, which results in much less understeer allowing for faster cornering". Have any of you folks tried this? Thanks.
  5. Hi. You can try Baron von Frier in Berkeley. They replced and repainted the rear plastic bumper on my '98 Passat Wagon 5-6 years ago. The color was Nebbio Blue, a light metallic blue. The bumper was a perfect fit and the paint was a perfect match. It still looks that way.
  6. It's a vibration bushing used on your air filter box. Someone took the box out and when it was put in, they must have not noticed it came out where the alignment post goes through. The post mates inside the bushing in which sits in a hole under the rear lip of the air filter box. Hope that helps :P Hi, Wardhog. Yes, that is the correct part. However, when I removed my airbox (which is surprisingly easy to do) There were already two blue grommets installed in the body panel under the air box. They look just like the blue grommet that is under the secureing bolt at the center-rear of the air box. Speculation: The previous owner or shop removed the air box and lost the black bushings. They then used the blue grommets because they were available. Go figure. Anyhow, the box fits OK and there are no rattles.
  7. FWIW, I had the tech's at two different dealerships listen to the engine as it stopped. One tech could not identify the source of the noise. The other said it was a bad or loose muffler mount.

  9. Hi, folks. I have a 2002 996C2, 6-speed. While looking under the engine I noticed this part stuck between the rear of the engine block (or maybe a water passage) and the bracket for the exhaust system. The part number is 999 703 478 40. Its material is EPDM. Does anyone have any idea what this part is and where it goes? I have had the car for four months and the engine works and sounds OK - except for a clattering sound just as it approaches 0 RPM when shut off. TIA. Dan
  10. The weather stripping I use is available at most hardware stores. The brand I have is M-K "Heavy Duty Window and Door Weatherstrip Tape". It is a black soft foam that has an adhesive on one side. It comes in 1/4" and 1/2" widths. Very useful stuff.
  11. Thanks for the tip nycebo. I've tried the various combinations are the noise persists. I'll see what the dealer has to say on tuesday.
  12. Another suggestion... My Carrera, like my previous Boxster, had squeaks from the air bag cover. There was sufficient play in the cover to allow me to insert small pieces of black weatherstripping without having to remove the cover. The glove compartment door also squeaked and was cured with several strategically placed pieces of weatherstripping. Best of luck.
  13. Hi, all. I have a 2002 C2 3.6L with maybe the same problem. It is a CPO car purchased in early February, 2006. When I turn off the engine, as it spools to a stop, there is a rattling or clattering sound from the engine followed by a metallic screech just as it stops. At idle and above there are only normal engine sounds and no vibrations. The rattle/clatter has been there for a couple of weeks, the screech is new. I didn't notice the noises earlier as they cannot be heard from inside the car, only in the garage when the windows are down or the door is opened (with all of the rain the windows have seldom been down). At idle in neutral there is a rattling sound. However, when I press the clutch pedal the noise disappears. The service advisors at two different dealerships have said that it is the "throwout bearing" (my term) that is rattling. They say it cannot be adjusted and is nothing to worry about. Note that there are 44,000 miles on the original clutch and it is still smooth with no grabbing or slipping. So, I don't think it is the clutch. The car has had a constant diet of Chevron Supreme, so I don't think bad gas is the problem. The car is scheduled to go to the dealership next week. Any comments will be appreciated. TIA Dan
  14. Ah, yes. The car must be taken to "any smog check station". I guess because the car has 66,000 miles on it.
  15. Hi, all. My son is at UCSD with our trusty VW Passat. He has to take it for a smog check. Can you folks recommend a reliable smog station in San Diego or the La Jolla area? I know this is not necessairly 996 related but I have a 996. TIA
  16. Are you sure it isn't 236 - 18" tires? I know some of mine were hard to read... No 236, but it lists 411 - 18" Carrera wheel.
  17. Definitely. Let me drive a few more miles on the car. The most apparent difference is the low-end torque. The 996 makes more torque at 1500 RPM than the 986 did at peak (it was a 2.7).
  18. Got it! Actually for me the handling and power of the 996 are a given. What I really appreciate on the car are the low beam light pattern (I leave for work when it is dark along Moraga Way - twisty with big potholes and deer), the high beams (they bore a hole along Moraga Way), and the side mirrors. The mirrors' field of coverage and lack of blind spots are just about the best of all the cars I've owned over the years. The ID paper under the trunk has 601. The different codes do get confusing. I'm still trying to find out what Option 226 is. The wife and I drive up to Healdsberg today, early to avoid traffic. We returned via Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Calistoga, etc. Great drive! (except for the guy in the silver Mustang who would brake in the middle of turns. There was no room to pass him.) Thanks for all of your help.
  19. Hi, Kiko. Do you have even wear across the tread at those pressures? TIA
  20. Well, folks, I did it. I sold my Boxster and purchased a 2002 CPO Carrera 2. It is black with the Savannah Beige full leather interior. Other options include: Bose, CD changer, advanced technic package, side skirts, and rear window wiper. The car was originally sold in New Jersey (Paul Miller) but I was able to obtain print outs of all the maintenance records (thank you, Aaron) and they indicate the original owner was fastidious about maintenance (whew!). Nice car; even the wife likes it. The Boxster (2001, Tip, white, blue interior) was a wonderful car: 28/29 MPG on the freeway; the top did not leak one drop through two Northern California winters; and no oil leaks, not even seeps at the seal areas. If anyone is interested, Porsche of Oakland has re-certified it and it is at their showroom. See you on the road... flash your lights and wave "hello".
  21. Loren: Some of my confusion was due to noticing a regular halogen bulb in the high beam location. The 2002 owner's manual calls this the supplemental high beam for bi-xenon installations. When I switch on the high beams I can see the xenon high beam as well as the more yellowish halogen beam. TP (Jeff?): I located this code on several sites. Porsche Exclusiv lists Option P74 as "Xenon Headlamp Package - Xenon Headlamp Package with dynamic leveling and headlight washers".
  22. Hi, Loren. I'm confused by use of the terms Litronic and bi-Xenon in this forum. They seem to be used interchangeably. I understand that Litronic means low beam HID and bi-xenon means high/low beam HID. My car, 2002 996 C2, has Option 601-headlamp litronic. A search on the Web does not indicate an option for bi-Xenon. Can you clarify the difference? What is the option code for bi-Xenon, if it exists? TIA. PS My car also has Option 226 the description of which I cannot find anywhere. Does anyone know what 226 is?
  23. I've also noticed the same odor with my 2002 C2. And, like you, I cannot find any evidence of rubbed or overheated rubber. I do not see any water leaks and the radiator cap is sound. To me coolant smells differently from rubber. Puzzling.
  24. I don't know about starts in really cold weather but sometimes I start my 2001 in the 40s. It always starts with no problems. It fires on all cylinders immediately and runs smooth. I don't take the revs over 2600-2800 RPM until the temp gage is at normal.
