  1. RFM, when you state 98 or 100 octane are these numbers based on the ROM octane rating or on the Anti-Knock Index (AKI) rating which is (R+M)/2?

  4. Hi, there. I spent some time investigating the .apn file as I had never heard of it. It is a proprietary file format used by Alpine (but you probably already know that). I could not find any file converters. Apparently, it has a complex file structure.   5. Does this modification affect the highway MPG? My 2002 C2 gets 29 MPG on the freeway (75+/- MPH) and I'd hate to loose that. TIA.

  7. I always leave the tops of my rear seats down, so I guess it looks like a 2-seater. I have had no problems when my wife and I have driven in the HOV lanes, mostly on I-80 and I-680.
  8. Ah ha, salt on the roads. We don't have much experience with that in California. I suggest periodic water washes to remove the salt.
  9. But, but, but, determine what caused the corrosion! The shields on my 2002 look almost new. Hot glycol coolant can be corrosive but I don't think it would cause that damage.
  10. Hi, Adam. I did consider replacing only the regulator. However, with the effort required to remove and reinstall the alternator I decided to play it safe and replace the entire unit.
  11. Well troops, it was the alternator. I installed a new (refurb.) unit last night and all is well. The voltmeter registers just under 14 V. It is probably my imagination but the car seems to run better (and the sky is bluer, the grass is greener, etc.) I followed Loren's DIY which was indispensable. One comment on the DIY. Step 7 states gentle tapping on the right side bolt to push back the threaded insert. Gentle tapping - HAH. This was the hardest part of the installation. It must have taken me 45+ minutes of whacking the bolt or the insert and using penetrating oil to get the insert to move. Once the insert had moved about 1/16" the old alternator came out as easy as could be. The new unit had a slightly greater space between the two right side lugs and it practically walked itself into position. All-in-all I was very satisfied in the repair. When one first looks at the alternator one asks how on earth can it be removed. However, once the air filter box is removed there is now plenty of room for the repair - just mind the little hoses and the o-ring as Loren cautions. Enjoy the 4th!

  13. logray, thank you for the links. I have inspected all of the cables except the ones connected to the alternator. I have even loosened their nuts and wiggled their clips to obtain a better metal-to-metal connection. All the connections look good with no corrosion. It is interesting that the clutch pulley manufacturer states that the pulley should be replaced at 90,000 kM (per RFM's post in the first link). Tonight I'll check if there is any slippage with the clutch pulley (my last gasp before removing the alternator). Have any of you folks experienced a pulley failure or replaced it? Thank again.
  14. Hello. When I start the engine the volt meter shows about 10 volts during cranking and 14 volts just after the engine starts. Within minutes the voltage slowly drops to 13 volts then more slowly to below 12 volts (after, say 15 minutes). I thought the battery may have had a bad cell. However, installation of another, sound, battery shows the same symptoms. Thus, I plan to replace the alternator. The NAPA Auto Parts website lists several alternators for my model (2002 C2, 6-speed). I can eliminate those for automatic transmissions. The remaining units have either the 6-rib pulley or the 6-rib clutch pully. My car has the clutch pulley. Can the clutch pully slip causing the alternator to rotate more slowly and generate less voltage? Can the clutch pulley be replaced by itself? Can the clutch pulley be locked or pinned? What is the purpose of the clutch pulley? Any advice will be appreciated. TIA. Dan
  15. Yes, it was easily re-attached. I used two tiny drops of Loctite Super Glue Gel. This is a wonderful adhesive for small repair jobs. Also, it does not appear to harden in its container. I have had it for some months.
  16. judgejon, I also first thought about Mr. Potato Head. The part does fit on the clear plastic interior light panel above the dash. It appears to reflect the light from a yellow LED on to the rearview mirror. I've never noticed it before.
  17. Hi, folks. Can any of you identify this part? I don't even know if it is a Porsche part. I found it this afternoon on the floor carpeting between the clutch pedal and the fuse box. It does not look like any of the black plastic controls inside the car (2002 base C2). It does not look to have come from my GPS, camera, etc. A locking tab appears to have broken. There is a small mirror on the underside. TIA.
  18. The #1 911 apparently collided with a Golf near Bergwerk. It completed 47 laps. The #9 911 (hybrid) stopped at Breidscheid with "technical difficulties". It completed 142 laps.   23. I always use 91 AKI in my daily driver ('02, C2, 6-speed) here in California, either Chevron or Shell. Sometimes I add two gallons to xylene to 12 gallons of 91 to have 95 AKI. There is a noticeable boost in mid-range. I have not tried a top-end run. Adding the xylene brings the aromatics content up to around pre-RFG levels. Problem is the stuff runs about $20/gallon. My commute runs 21-22 MPG. Highway driving yields 27-29 MPG.
  24. I check my tire pressures every 2 to 3 weeks anyhow looking for small leaks. To me that is more important than nitrogen's lower diffusion rate.
