  1. Black Forest, near convoy st. My 02 is still under warranty, so hit the dealer, but I've heard nothing but good about these folks. Molto grazie, Kid. I'll be in touch with them shortly. By the way, how long's the warranty? Mine's an '01.
  2. Can someone recommend an effective indie aligner for my '01 C2 in San Diego? Hoehn wants $200. Thanks...
  3. You can't just give up on us like this. Don't you understand that we ALL hate our Porsches deep down inside? We all know they're worth about half what they cost, maintenance costs twice what it should, and they eat our insides like canopy termites. You need to just grit your teeth and bear it like the rest of us. Honestly, though, I feel as though you got very unlucky in your Porsche experience(s) and it's a shame you're leaving with disappointment. So far I've been very lucky, and generally very content with mine. That aside, now I'm REALLY hoping your Mercedes works fine. Did you get a PPI on the Porsches, by the way?
  4. My policy is that if there's ever a potential conflict of interests, I should seek to diffuse it. Especially if I'm spending more than $20. More than likely, everything's fine, but why not have the extra peace of mind of a <$300 PPI?
  5. Million dollar question (or maybe just $3-5K): Can you reasonably claim residency in a state other than CA? When I was looking around, no one would give me a quote because it's illegal to sell an after market warranty in CA (where I live). However, I guess since the military lifestyle is that of a modern-day gypsy vagabond's, we can pick any of the 50, and so I picked a DC policy. But, if you have family in another state, you should be able to use their address at which to base your policy... and use it in CA. Just some ideas.
  6. I bought my 911 C4 recently with additonal 36000 miles/3 years and bumper to bumper from local credit union. I paid a lot $5k for platinum, could have gotten the silver for 3.5k but so far paid for $2K dealer work for me...In two months, rear light switch, door switch, spark plug tubes, main rear seal, misc...I am thinking of whether I did paid too much but I bought the car about 12K below KBB, with extreme negotiations over 3 mos... I could cancel and prorate the warranty also...I could sell with the warranty as well. It is from Mercury..Except emissions and navigation unit, they cover everything. Obviously, the insurance companies come out on top: They get our cash up front, and we get [hopefully] peace of mind. The only question you need to ask yourself is whether or not $5K is worth your peace of mind. I think $5K's a little much for your car, but if (1) you could afford it and (2) it lets you sleep better at night as long as you own an expensive car, it's worth it! When you think about it, "peace of mind" is pretty hard to fix with a price tag, as any insurance salesman will emphasize. They always win though, in the long run. But so do you, when you frame it in this context. Remember, you shouldn't be betting solely on whether or not they'll pay out more than you paid for the policy; that's not actually what they're selling. They're selling you a warm and fuzzy feeling... an unusually expensive one, in your case :D Just my 2 cents...
  7. Definitely looks interesting and I'm a sucker for custom. Looks a little too big for the 996 [everything tends to, anyway], though I do love the idea of having some rich bass in the car. I'm about to install a 10" Bazooka I've had for about 7 years in my other cars. However, if previous buyers of this gigantic contraption loved it, I'd consider getting it. If I can get in touch with the seller and some buyers, I'll post what I hear for anyone else's edification. And I use 'edification' loosely. In the meantime, I've attached the photo below to give an idea of what I really have in mind... it's a little more reasonable, I think...
  8. Mike: It is very important to verify that the Warranty Company is financially sound and has adequate reserves. There are a number of horror stories floating around on the message boards where posters have paid big $$$ for a warranty, only to find the company "dissolved" within a few months. Best to check with your state's Better Business Bureau and your state's insurance department. Also do a search on "Ripoffreport.com" Regards, Maurice. I think it's "ripoffreport.org" ...and how do I "verify that the Warranty Company is financially sound and has adequate reserves?"
  9. I urge everyone to stay away from Continental Warranty... their high-pressure sales tactics in addition to [literally] hundreds of complaints on BBB/RipoffReport.org were enough to spurn me to cancel my policy with them (it took at least a month to get my refund). Coincidentally, I later found out that my mother already had one with them for a few years and says they've paid for more than the policy is worth on her Murcielago, which makes them sound more legitimate than I've heard. I'd still stay away, though. I think I'll buy the bumper-to-bumper "Warranty America UVP" from AA Auto Warranty for my 75K-mile 2001 C2; they seem legit to me so far (I've been talking with them for several weeks) and the plan's coverage is hard to believe for my car. If you like the plan (you can get the better one since you only have 15K miles) and want a contact number, let me know. Hope this helps some. I've attached a sample of their contract. 10. Sout, By no means am I an expert, but I was recently in the same place as you are right now. I've just ordered 2 rear tires through <www.tirerack.com> shipped to a local installer. When I was asking around on this forum, the practical crowd all basically pointed at Kumho Ecstas...which is what I bought. I understand that they're much quieter, more endurable, and certainly less expensive than anything endorsed by Porsche. After reading demosan's post, I checked <www.discounttire.com> for pricing on the tires I bought, and they're considerably more expensive than Tire Rack offers them at. A Tire Rack-recommended installer will install your tires for between $18 and $35 a tire...pretty standard stuff. Good luck!
  11. Stupid question here: What's a "TSB?" "Trouble Shooting Board?" Am I close, and how can I find these P-TSBs? Thanks Loren! You can gain access to the TSB section when you become a Contributing Member, with a donation. TSB= Technical Service Bulletin Is this Opus Dei? Was Santa going to tell me how things really work in the secret society a select few have come to know as "Congregatio Memberaris Contributario?" Does my wife have to submit to jus primae noctis with board members when I get married? I'd like to join Opus Renn. I think it's shady that I'm only now hearing about this cult, though. I love cults.

  13. Chris, I'm curious how you came to consider yourself "generally lucky in terms of rattles." Your creeks and rattles are the worst I've ever heard of, short of dragging your transmission over rocks. I'm also super sensitive to the rattles in my door (and passenger seat!!!) and your solutions are by far the most comprehensive I've seen. Man, you really went the distance! I look forward to determining exactly where the rattles are originate from so I can tackle them. Many P-owners seem complacent and accepting of this annoying and completely unnecessary flaw.
  14. Once you've been to Thailand (or San Francisco), you won't refer to anything you own as a "Tranny" anymore.
  15. Alright. I feel like a Porsche mech. After I cleared the codes with the Old Bastard Dirty II, the check-engine light never returned. But assuming something actually triggered it, I decided to go ahead and prophylactically clean the MAF yesterday. With the smart and comprehensive guidance of RT contributing members, I pulled the MAF, cleaned it and reinstalled it. I also fixed my spoiler, which just made yesterday even more awesome. No engine light and I'm so glad I've finally delved into my engine. Next I'm going to change my own oil! Thank you, Renntechers!
  16. Thank you, Izzy. Do I have to have 662 posts to be granted CM access? What made me ultimately buy THIS car was that instead of it having the full 69K miles that read on the odometer, the engine had been replaced under warranty at 46K in '04. Right now, it has almost 75K (which means the engine has 29K miles). I'll do the searches to see what I can find. I appreciate the advice.
  17. OK, I'm a total car idiot, but along with the decision to buy a 996 last September, I also vowed to eventually master it inside and out. But I don't know where to start, and now that I've got these 2 codes (P1128 & P1130) popping up (I erased them tonight, but am sure I'll be seeing them again), I want to follow the above advice. Only problem is, I don't have any idea where ANY of the components are located that are mentioned. How does someone like me become a P-DIYer? More pressingly: Do I have to cease and desist from driving the car until it's addressed?
  18. Alright Ladies and Gents, the codes are in and that OBD II is the most user-friendly computer I've EVER used... 1) P1128 2) P1130 I erased the codes, the light is out, and now I just need to be advised on what to do for my baby. It's my great hope that one of you doesn't report back that P1128 means the transmission is dislodged and P1130 that it's on the street somewhere. I'm hoping they just indicate that I need to wash the car a little more frequently. I await your deciphering...but have since jumped threads to "P1128 P1130" for obvious reasons.
  19. Thanks for your speedy reply, Izzy. Negative to all your questions, though. I've got an Autozone very near and will do exactly as you suggested. I'll be back with the codes. Thank you!
  20. Alright, a few minutes ago, my engine light came on in my '01 996 C2. The engine has 28K miles on it. I don't want to freak out, but I just got it a couple of months ago, and I'm pretty sure the "Check" light isn't telling me that I won a raffle. But other than the light, nothing obvious appears wrong with the engine (e.g., weird sounds, driving strangely, hiccups, etc.). What's my WORST- and BEST-case scenario here, and how urgent is it that I get it to my local P-specialist? I greatly appreciate the advice!
  21. Well, you could do what I did and buy an '01 with 60K miles and then find out the engine was replaced under warranty and really only had 20K miles on it for the same price. On that one, I think depending on the overall condition of the car, I'd get the '99 with 9K miles. do you know why the engine was replaced? is this common or a special case? THanks According to the dealership that replaced the engine in 2004 when I was doing my research before buying, it was replaced due to "a seal leak," which when I asked if it was RMS failure, the service writer answered "yeah." As I've understood it, Porsche will fix your RMS problem twice, and on the third, they replace the engine altogether. This is what I think went down for my car when it was at 46K miles. And to answer your question, although there are volumes upon volumes of literature on the RMS design flaw, this does happen entirely too frequently on 996s in my opinion. Some experts estimate it happens to only (!!!) 50% of them, while others actually say it's just a matter of time for 100% to fail. What mitigates the bad news a bit is that it's relatively inexpensive to repair; and once it's done right, it's is supposed to be enough. "Supposed" to be.
