  1. Thank you very much for your reply I found it very helpful. One other note is that I had 15w-50 weight oil in the car as it just came from a hotter climate. Perhaps the low temps here in Boston cused the oil to become too thick and cause some un-needed friction in the lifters when started after sitting so long in the cold?
  2. Hi everyone any help on this one would be appreciated. I have a 99' 996 with 75k on the engine. The car is no garage queen and driven quite regularly and the fluids have been changed religiously. The car was hit this past fall and has been in the body shop since last Novemeber (about 3 months). While in the shop I am not sure how often the engine was started. Having just received the car back I decided to change the oil and noticed glitter like flakes in the oil filter housing (Plastic cover inside the base) and in the oil drain pan (not many but enough to get me concerned). I am thinking that it could be normal and could have been caused by some no lubricated oil starved parts grinding when the car was started after sitting for such a long period of time. My car has never leaked a drop of oil, ever burnt oil, never used oil and never had a RMS problem. What do you guys think? The car runs fine, does not smoke or make any strange noises either. Thank you in advance. B
  3. Thanks- The only non OEM part is the spoiler. That was bought from Ebay (and a tremendous amount of work to get it to fit right). Regards B
  4. Just completed a facelift on my 99'. I love the new look the only draw back is that the car seems to draw too much attention from other drivers but I guess I'll get used to it. Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on the new look.. Regards B
  5. Well I was backed into today ironically by someone on vacation from Munich. It appears to be a good time to just update my 99 to the 02 style front end. If anyone has done this could you email me the part numbers. I am intending on buying the parts from Suncoast and have everything pretty much down except the deal on the lights. My question is will the newer style lights just slide into my old style tracks or did the mounting tracks change in 02? I know the wiring is a bit different but I heard that you can just splice into the old harness to make it work. Is this true? Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance! Also if anyone has an 02' bumper, fenders or headlights I'd be interested in buying them just email me at ben@garagenut.com
  6. If anyone has a set of stock 3.6 Mufflers 02' and up and wants to sell them please email me with the price and a phone number to reach you...thanks in advance. ben@garagenut.com
  7. If it is a Tiptronic have someone get in the car, put it in drive while firmly holding the brake (pedal brake). Open the engine lid and watch the engine as they apply gas (while holding the brake down). If the engine has more torque movement than normal I bet you it is one or both of the engine mounts. Just replaced mine and I had your same symptoms with no loose sway bar. Regards, Ben
  8. Are you getting a CEL with the cat bypass pipes? How hard is it to install/remove? Or if a shop did it, how much time do they quote and what was the charge? Thanks! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes I did get a CEL but the car runs great. They are very easy to install with common hand tools and anyone with average mechanical abilities can do it. The pipes retail for about $500 from Fab Speed and they also look great from behind the car (very high quality stainless steel). Regards
  9. 996 video w/cat bypass pipes Hi Guys- Go to this url www.garagenut.com and just refresh the page to watch the video. I posted this for all those of you considering getting cat bypass pipes. The video is of my 99' 996 Tip/stock mufflers and headers with Fab Speed Cat Bypass Pipes. They added a bunch of torque and took quite a bit off my 0-60 time. Worth the money. www.garagenut.com Cheers, Ben
  10. No special tools in particular except (spring compressor, deep dish metric sockets) just used these directions which was very helpful. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...=2532&hl=shocks
  11. Took about 5 hours and was easier than I thought. I love the new look what does everyone think just check out my profile. Regards Ben
  12. Yes- I installed these on my 99' 996 and kept the stock muffler/header setup on the car. I absolutely love them and they are suprisingly quiet (I am conservative too). I can feel a big difference in HP/Torque. I have owned 5 Porsches Boxster, Boxster S, 996 and this has been the best bang for the buck mod I have ever done. Keep the stock setup, the car will have slightly more growl (enough to get people wondering what's different about it) and enjoy. Regards
  13. Here is what you can do. There is no real way to adjust the throttle cable however having owned 4 Porsches I have found a realatively simple way to fix this and squeeze that extra little bit of movement out of the throttle body. Hold the throttle butterfly open with a tool (wrench, screwdriver etc.) slip the cable off of the catch. Now take the cable that has the small cylinder at the end of it and fasten a small zip tie onto it. Just click the zip tie all the way shut and snip off the extra (tail) replace the cable onto the holder and it will hold secure however now that zip tie takes up that little extra bit of slack. Just the amount you need. I did this on a 99' Boxster (same set up) and it worked fine until I sold the car and that was several years. Kind of half A__ way of doing it but it works. Regards...
  14. How much time did it take to install, I have been thinking about getting a set myself. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> About an hour and a half. Remove airbox, unclip all 4 02 sensors from wiring harness on rear of engine bay (either side if trunk latch), feed wires down through bottom of car, unscrew 4 02 sensors from old pipes, re-install in new pipes and re-run wires up through rear of car to re-connect wires to harness. Very easy job and very noticeable increase in torque and power. They are barely, and I mean barely louder than stock which surprised me. So quiet that I am thinking about getting a set of their mufflers. Take care.
  15. Just installed Fabspeed Cat Bypass Pipes on my 99' 996 (Stock mufflers still on). No check engine light and the car is definitely quicker. I can feel more torque and quicker acceleration (hands down no question) and they sound great! Surprisingly they are barely louder than the stock set-up so I am thinking about buying their mufflers. Great fit and finish as well. The install was fairly easy however the 02 sensors were the hard part. Basically have to remove the airbox to get at the plugs, label them and install them in the new pipes in their respective order. Well worth the money in my opinion! 99' 996 (Current) 98 Boxster 00 Boxster S 99 Boxster
  16. Thanks in advance for any help everyone. Somehow my odometer display switched to Kilometers and I cannot figure out how to switch it back to US Miles. Could someone out there let me know? Thanks everyone. 98' Boxster 99' Boxster 00' Boxster S 99' 996 "Current" Jim O'brien
  17. Hi everyone- I live in Chicagom and store my car in a garage (unheated) during the winter month. I try and drive it at least once or twice a week for a few long hauls down to the city (20 miles each way). Tonight I noticed that the oil filler cap has water droplets in it and the neck of the oil filler tube is coated with a brown residue which I am assuming is rust. I have no coolant leaks because the coolant level remains constant so I am assuming that the cold weather is causing this? Does the 3.4 engine have a PCV valve could that be the issue? Is this normal? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jim 98 Boxster 99 Boxster 00 Boxster S 99 996 (Current)
  18. Has anyone out there ever noticed a light brown milky residue in their oil filler cap? I am assuming that this is condensation in the tube possibly caused by the cold weather we have been having up here in Chicago. Would this be a safe assumption. I own a 99' C2 with approximately 60k miles on it. Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jim 98' Boxster 99' Boxster' 00' Boxster S 99' 996
