  1. Wow, that was lightning fast! Many thanks!!! 808C4
  2. Hi Daryl, I recently purchased the Durametric tool and for the price, I HIGHLY recommend you buy it for your shop!!! I purchased the "Enthusiast" version for my 92' 964 Cab and 99' 996 C4, has been a great help in resetting the Check Engine Light and determining various fault codes. Saved me lots of time (no need to take my babies to the dealer) and LOTS of money too! Very easy to use and the guys at Durametric are very helpful. I now only wish I had purchased the "Pro" version because it can be used on an unlimited amount of cars... so I could help my friends + the "Pro" kit comes with the 50' extension cable and all the different connectors. The only thing, I feel, would make the software better is the capabilty to turn "on" and "off" options. e.g. door locks. They said they are working on it. Of course this tool doesn't handle everything the factory software does but it is very easy to use and you have the abilty to check the most common areas for problems. FYI: They are always improving the software and provide updates for life. Good luck! 808C4 :)
  3. Anyone have an electrical/wiring diagram for a 1992 C2 Cab with Tip trans? I need the Reverse Light circuit specifically. Currently have a probelm with the "Reverse lights" always turned on + making Tip trans not work properly. Any help is welcomed! mahalo, 808C4 :o
  4. Hi everyone, The 1992 C2 Cabriolet with Tiptronic Trans is the first Porsche I have owned with an automatic trans. Bought the car for my wife to make it easier for her to drive in stop-and-go traffic. Quick question: Are the "Gear Indictaor/Position" lights (red arrow) on the dash supposed to be lit up even if the headlights/parking lights are not turned on???FYI: I sometimes have to turn on the headlights so the red arrow lights up to show which gear (1,2,3,4) I am in when in Tip mode. Is this normal??? In auto mode I realize the Gear Indicator on the console area clearly shows what gear you are in. Hope someone with a Tiptronic Trans can help me out. Mahalo, 808C4
  5. I would like a copy of the 964 workshop manual too. Where do I send funds to and how much? A PDF version is okay. Thank you, 808C4 Note: We own a 1992 C2 Cab + a 1999 C4 cpe
  6. Hi Loren, Couldn't find a relay up under the dash on the drivers side??? Ho wfar up inside do I need to search? I only found the relay in the front trunk area that powers the backup light sand rear fog light (if equipped). Did some testing, tried to start the car with the above mentioned rely removed, result was the reverse lights were out but the Tip trans still went into emergency mode... FYI: As mentioned in other posts, if I start the car in Nuetral the Tip Trans operates properly. Do you have a wiring diagram for the "reverse lights" for my 1992 C2 Cabriolet??? I am pretty sure this circuit is what it is throwing my Tip computer off... I will greatly appreciate it. Aloha, James
  7. Hi everyone, This may be a lame question but need your help again. Does anyone know if a 1992 Tiptronic Trans has a seperate backup switch??? I have islolated my shifting problem to the backup switch...FYI: they stay on all the time when starting from Park. Or do I have to replace the center console micro-switch pack to fix the backup light situation? Loren, please supply any good advice. FYI: I realy don't wish to take it to my local dealer $$$$$$$ (they are great and do an excellent job, but bust my bank everytime I go there...) Please advise soon so me and my wife can begin to enjoy her car... Thanks in advance! 808C4 :o
  8. No haven't had anyone help yet! Only Loren has supplied a little info to point me in th eright direction but noone else has come forward with real technical/mechanical know how... Wish someone could give some insight on this common issue with the Tiptronic trans. Thanks and keep checking back. JS
  9. T-20 Security Torx Bad news concerning using WD40: Being a long time user/fan of WD40 (use it for almost everything...from cleaning my guns to fixing skeaky door hinges, etc.) I do recommned in todays world of high tech plastics and electronics it's probably best to utilize "CRC" brand spray cleaner, which is labeled "Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner" becuase it does not harm the rubber or plastic parts of your intake. Unfortunatey WD40 doesn't seem to be the best on rubber pieces in the long run... Just helpful info for what's its worth.
  10. Thanks very much! I get to work on it right away... JS Just used the Durametric Diagnostic Tool and got Fault Codes 38 (Transmission gear selector switch) and 53 (Kick-down switch) errors logged. Anyone have some insight if this is easy to fix? What I mean is...is it worth it to go through alll the tests in the repair manual or should I simply change out the switches??? I don't know if this is a common thing to go out on 964's as I have more experience with 996's. If I need a repair manual which one should I buy to really fix/repair a 964??? Just bought the BentleyEnthusiasts Companion book but is simply an overview and not much help for my issue...I need the OEM detailed repair procedures. (Note: Thanks Loren for your IM, it helped but what and where can I buy a repair manual?) Thank you to those that take time to assist me! Good news is I am getting closer to getting the Tiptronic to work properly... JS Okay, just did some checking yesterday... 1. When I start the car with the shift lever (as you normally should...) in PARK, once the car turns over the Tip warning light goes on and the trans is in emergency mode. 2. When I start the car from NEUTRAL the trans works just fine in Automatic mode as well as in Manual mode. Test drove the car and she shifts properly. 3. QUESTION: Can anyone tell me what needs to be done so I can start the car properly from Park??? I cleaned the microswitches, I disconnected then reconnected all trans connections possible. If someone (any expert) can help and I can correct the problem then I can move on to the next phase of my restoration... Many thanks in advance!!!

  12. FYI regarding driveabilty - FRONTs: Drives fine overall and looks way cool!!! If you upgrade to 18" from 15"-16" (factory wheels) wheels you will feel a slight difference or will need a little more effort to turn the front wheels... but it's not bad. Please keep in mind I utilized 7.5" - THIS THE WIDEST I would recommned for easy steering. If you use 8" - 8.5" as many people have tried then you may experience some loss in driveabilty or it may not be as smooth as you want. In the end, it's up to you. REARs: You can upgrade to 9"-10" wheels but if you don't mind some trial and error to get things just right, then I highly recommned 10"'s for a more aggresive look while maintainting an overall OEM look.
  13. Thanks Dave... Just received 15mm spacers with studs yesterday. (...already ordered them last week) 15mm's will make for a 50mm offset when using 18" x 10" ET 65. Put them on the car and they seem to work just fine with one exception; on the rear passenger side I may need to adjust the oil line as it is very very close to the tire. It clears but I am a littel woried about tire rub and don't wish a risk of a blowout. Other than that the 15mm work great and I don't have to roll the fender edges. FYI: Using 265's in the rear. I do wish I would have seen your post before buying the 15mm's but as I mentioned they work well for now. I will add pictuers soon to help other's that may want to upgrade to 996 18" turbo wheels. Sure makes my wifes car look even cooler!!! One more question for everyone: I have heard when utilizing 18" wheels it is best to upgrade/add a steering rack brace like ones on later model 993's...is this true?? Anyone have a part number or can provide assistance? Mahalo.
  14. Howzit. Not 100% sure but I can shed some light on importing ROW cars to the U.S.. My brother once had a "Grey Market" 911 Targa in the 80's (what they called non-U.S. spec cars at the time) and when he moved the car from Hawaii to Washington state, he found when registering the car with WA DMV he was surprised that his car was a ROW or "Grey Market" car. The DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) wanted to take the car from him but after much debate and research with the orginal U.S. dealer that imported the car it ws found/proved the car was properly DOT'ed as they say when brought to America. In the end his car was okay to stay but the DMV pop-riveted an ugly plate onto the "A" pilar proving his car was good to go. Overall a hassle we do not wish to go through again. In otherwards, check with the U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation) regarding regulations and requirements for importing your car to the U.S. otherwise risk losing your car like Bill Gates almost did when he tried to import his 959 back in the day... What my brother and I learned was the U.S. DOT is mostly concerned about passenger safety and emmissions. ROW cars usually don't have the safer/stronger bumpers, extra bracing within the doors and/or some of the other safety equipment that U.S. spec cars usually come with + emmisions is highly regulated so make sure you have CATS installed and you will need to pass an emmissions test. Also, lighting can not exceed standard U.S. regulations...unfortunately you will need to get rid of your 100w/80w headlights and you will need side marker lights installed if you don't already have them. The bottom line is...unless you really love your car or you have an exotic/limited production Porsche...in the end, I'm sorry to say, it may not be worth all the trouble and cost $$$ to DOT your car. Depending what year your car is worth it may be better to order a new U.S. spec car and pick it up in Stuttgart then import it back to America or simply buy another one like the one you already have when you get to America. It will be wayyyyyyy cheaper. Good luck!!!
  15. Really... What do you think will work best as far as an upgrade??? 17"'s? Thanks for your input but I really want to try the 18"'s becuase I have them already. Anyone know if 15mm spacers are needed for the rears?
  16. I have a set of OEM 18" Turbo Twist wheels from a 2000 996 that I want to put on my wifes car to make it look more aggresive...will the rear 18" x 10" ET 65 wheel fit and work safely if I utilize 15mm spacers??? Do I need longer studs, and how long? Note: The 18" x 7.5" front wheels fit and work just fine.
  17. Thanks very much! I get to work on it right away... JS
  18. Yes Loren it is. All other check lights function properly but the Tip light satys on even after you are driving. Also, as mentioned I know it stays in the emergency 3rd gear becuase the trans is not changing gears even when moving the auto + manual gear lever. Your expertise is well appreciated. I talked to a few mechanic friends and they suspect it is the shifter switchs located below the center console. If you have any pics or know where to find any reference pics it would help. I am still waiting for the C2 manual to arrive...but am very anxious to get this corected asap so we can have fun driving the car and ensuring we don't do any damage to the trans. Mahalo, JS
  19. Okay, is it an individual switch I can change out or do I have to change the whole bank of switches in the shifter area? Without the repair manual I am still not familiar with what I am looking at. Thanks!
  20. Just bought a beautiful 1992 C2 Cabriolet for my wife...only bad thing is the Tiptronic Trans dosen't work in Manual mode and currently only drives in the emergency 3rd gear mode. Any advice and/or tricks to check and ultimately repair it will be greatly appreciated!!! This car is a "mini" project for me to complete and for my wife to enjoy driving - Overall the car is in great condition but I am restoring it to almost new. Already began restoration project with all new tail lights, new interior carpet, various seals, various lost or broken pieces, and added keyless entry system. FYI: Other than the Tip not working properly she only really needs cosmetic touching up...at least to my standards. Most of my friends say the car is already in great condition but I really want to make it special for my wife. Especially because it's air-cooled. (FYI: I drive a 99' C4 6spd) Motor is tight, AC was upgraded to R134 and works perfectlty, upgraded stereo, seats in very good condition, everything works as it should, body only has a few dings, need to rapaint the rear decklid, new top installed, ...as I mentioned for how old the car is she is in great shape...just want to fix the transmission! Thanks in advance if anyone can help me to save money not having to buy very expensive parts unnecessarily. I don't mind spending whatever it takes to get the car running properly...just don't want waste money if I don't have to. Here's what I did so far: 1. Checked trans fluid - ok (plan to change fluid/filter soon anyway) 2. Removed center console, switches were very dirty covered in old foam washer particles - cleaned off switches - still doesn't work in Manual mode. (Tip Trans light stil lit up) FYI: I suspect the car had some light flood damage at one time due to the interior seems musty..the reason why I am changing the whole interior carpet. 3. Ordered new Tip Relay - wll change this weekend to see if it helps. 4. Plan to check individual switches soon. 5. Ordered 964 repair manual - ...waiting for it! Wish it would arrive sooner! 6. Also, the reverse lights are on when the car is in Park. They go out when trans in Drive. Why??? 7. Trans "clunks" into Reverse mode. Suspect a trans mount or engine mount will need to be changed? Anyway, enough rambling, any help will be much appreciated. JS
