  1. I recently returned the suspension on my Boxster S to stock and during the process, I wrote up instructions to help anyone who might want to change springs/struts and/or camber plates. http://gwl.rmsolo.org/hacks/suspension/index.html Overall this is not a difficult job but it can be somewhat time consuming the first time you do it. Graeme
  2. Does it screech when you turn the wheel or just when the engine is running? Graeme
  3. What year is your car? If the battery is flat, the method to get to it varies by model year. '01's and later have a terminal behind a panel to the left of the drivers feet that you can attach another battery to which will allow you to open the front trunk. Once you get to the battey, the usual techniques are recommended. With the donor vehicle turned off do the following: 1. Connect the positive terminals of each battery using your jumper cables. 2. Connect the negative terminal of the vehicle supplying the jump to a good grounding point on your Boxster - NOT the battery. 3. Start the donor vehicle, let it run for a minute of so at ~1500 rpm to get some charge in your battery. 4. Start the Boxster. 5. Turn off the donor vehicle. 6. Remove the cables. Drive off :) Failure to execute step 5 has the potential to damage the donor vehicle. It's alternator is pumping lots of current to charge your battery. Simply removing this heavy load can cause a voltage spike. This spike may or may not occur. If it does occur, it may or may not damage something. OTOH, why risk it! Good Luck, Graeme p.s. My car does not like to sit idle. It takes about a month of inactivity for my battery to discharge enough that it needs a jump start.
  4. First off, :welcome: and congratulations on your new toy  A good way to find what an option is if it is not listed in the latest order guide is to go to Google http://www.google.com and type in "Porsche option code ###" where ### is the 3 digit option you are trying to find. Good Luck, Graeme
  5. 1. The speed remains in memory until either cruise is turned off (with the swtich at the end of the stalk) or the ignition is turned off. 2. You local Porsche dealer should be able to tell you where to find this. 3. There is absolutely no performance gain from the Sport Exhaust. It is 1200eur of audible and visual bling ;)
  6. 'fraid not. You just have to wiggle your arm up in there. Good Luck, Graeme
  7. :welcome: Welcome Colin. The Boxster is an incredibly fun car. Congratulations! #1. Yup, wot a pain. #2. I have the stock seats and find them very comfortable. Must be a body type thing. GT3 seats are an alternative but are very expensive. #3. The radio should turn off ~5s after the key is removed. It will stay on as long as the key is in the ignition. If this bugs you, once you turn the car off, pull the key out of the ignition, then put it back in. The radio will go off (after ~5s) and stay off until you turn the ignition back on. This is a feature of the car, not a problem. #4. The original coating on these items reacts badly to sunscreen. Whether this will be replaced under warranty will depend on your dealer. I got my door armrest replaced without question the have not had the issue recur. #5. RMS problems are purely cosmetic - a few small drop of oil on the floor is the worst of the problem. There is not even enough oil leaks out to worry about having to top it off. Graeme
  8. Has anyone done this? I had to break the tabs on the old shifter to get it out. I'm assuming that I'll need to replace them if I want to put it back in my car. Are they available as separate parts or do you have to buy a whole new shifter. Thanks, Graeme
  9. Foaming: The oil drains down into sump. The sump sits below the crankshaft. If there is too much oil, the crankshaft dips down into the oil as it rotates. This aretes the oil (much like an egg whisk when you are making meranque) and significantly reduces its lubricating abilities  Graeme
  10. Congratulations! :clapping: The behavior of the spoiler light changed between the 2000 and 2001 models. If you have a 2001 or later, the spoiler light works just like all the other warning lights on the dash. 2000 or earlier, it behaves like jporter states. Have fun with your new toy, Graeme
  11. I think your over concerned about the problem. I fitted a '99 996 front bumper cover on my '01 S. The air ducting behind the cover for the side radiators is identical on the 996 and 986. The difference you see is purely cosmetic. The cover I got was not from a 'tip. I purchased and easily replaced central part with that has the central opening for my 3rd radiator. It was all a simple bolt-on. The hardest part is getting to the screws behind the inner fender liner that hold the extreme edges of the bumper cover together. Good Luck, Graeme
  12. The only details about this proposed class are what was published in the August Fastrack (click on the link below) . The relevant section is in column 3 of page F160. August Fastrack If this class is of serious interest to you, get your letter(s) of support off to your local CRB representative. Good Luck, Graeme
  13. Nope. Pagids work great but make horrible noises when cool/warm. It's just something you'll have to live with for as long as you run Pagid pads. Sorry, Graeme
  14. I just leave them zip tied to the strut. Works a treat. Graeme
  15. I think Jeff has it. I'm pretty sure the reason has to do with the window "remembering" where the limits of its travel are. For the "one-touch" to work, it has to know where the top and bottom of its travel. Cycling the window 2 or 3 times appears to sort things out. Graeme
  16. I'm a EE major and I have a theory why the battery charger didn't work. I need to get my charger into the lab here at work to see if I'm right. The 2/10/50 amp thing is a current limit - no real danger of doing any harm no matter what the switch is set to. I did notice that it made no difference what setting I had the charger on, the meter on the front read less than 1 amp. When I attached the charger to the battery directly, the current went up to about 10 amps! That implies to me that the little post is isolated from the rest of the electrical system somehow. I'll report back once I get a chance to look at the charger in the lab and see if I can come up with a good way of being able to use it to pop the trunk. Jumper cables are a PITA and being able to use the charger is just more convenient. Graeme
  17. Went out to my '01 Boxster this morning and when I pulled the door handle, the window did not go down - ohoh. Went to put my spare key in the ignition (couldn't find my primary key) and lo and behold, there was my primary key already in the ignition. The battery is as flat as gopher on a freeway! :cursing: No problem I think, I'll just hook up my battery charger to the auxiliary terminal in the fusebox that the nice Porsche engineers put there for this very problem. Hooked everything up and got a spark when I attached the -ve clip, so we have power. Set the charger to its 50amp "start" setting to make sure we have plenty of juice. This illuminated the airbag light on the dash, but only the airbag light, nothing else. The led on my CDR23 radio was also blinking funny. Blink, blink, blink, pause, blink, blink, blink, pause... hmmm, what's up with that. Anyhoo, crossing my fingers, I pulled the front trunk release button and.......nothing, nada, not a sound - dammit! :censored: OK, I'll just leave the charger attached for 5 minutes or so and go get a cup of tea. Came back 10 minutes later and looking through the rear window I could see the airbag light was still on. Funny, I removed the key and closed the door, why is the airbag light still on? Ah well, opened the door - no domelight, no clock, no odometer. Not good! Tried the front trunk release again....still nothing  Time to initiate plan B - call my local Porsche tech. Didn't take long for the dealership to get "H" on the phone (yup, that's what he likes to be called, "H") Explained what I was doing and he asked "Do you have another battery you could hook up to the auxiliary terminal?" Well yes, but shouldn't 50amps from the charger be enough? "Well no", he said "We have always had success using another battery". "OK", I tell him, "I have an emergency start box in my wifes car, I'll give it a try." So I turn off the charger and hook up the start box. Everything looks the same, the airbag light is the only sign of life on the dash and the radio is seemingly mocking me with its blink, blink, blink, pause, blink, blink, blink, pause... Pull on the trunk release and "click!", it's open  Opened the trunk, accessed the battery, hooked up the start box to the battery and after a few cranks, she started right up :clapping: So, this got me thinking. Why did the battery hookup work, but the battery charger did not? Any suggestions? Graeme
  18. Another decent tire that gives great "bang for the buck" is the Kumho Ecsta 712. Better tire but a little more expensive is the Kumho Ecsta MX.
  19. "Is this advisable". Depends. Do you have 16" wheels? If so, budget a new set of 17" or larger as the Boxster S/996 brakes do not fit under 16" wheels. Why do you want the bigger brakes? They are heavier and so add rotating mass and unsprung weight. If you are looking for better braking performance, they will definitely help. If you want to "look cooler" they most certainly will fit the bill here :) They will work with no problems other than the fitment and weight issues I mention above. I say "go for it", Graeme
  20. "Change of mfg tire installed on the production line (not customer selectable)" Graeme
  21. Turro, this is a very good question. The official Porsche answer is "Just let the plastic window fold the way it wants." When the weather is warm, >15C, I don't worry about how the window folds. When temperatures are lower, I make sure the window folds properly. This procedure is affecionately known as the "Boxster Chop". :) Graeme
  22. You've got mail. I hope it helps. Graeme
  23. Did you check the inboard pads too? This can be hard to do unless you remove the wheel. Each of the 8 pads on a Boxster has a wear sensor. Graeme
  24. Drive shaft to transmission is 39Nm or 29lbft Drive shaft to wheel hub is 460Nm or 360lbft Good Luck, Graeme
  25. I'm afraid those lights are only compatible with the Renntech forum. ;) Other non-translucent and red light compatible forums are: General Boxster chit-chat, Porsche Pete's Boxster Board and Rennlist Track/DE/Autocross, Boxster Racing Board :welcome: Graeme
