  1. I need to find a specialist to run the dyno. I'm told that unless the front propshaft is disconnected before the power run the viscous clutch and front diff can be seriously damaged. It seems the only way to get a figure is to run it 2wd. Anyone heard these horror stories?

    ANYTIME, ANYONE doesn't know enough to disconnect the coupling shaft for a "pull" Methinks you would be better off NOT doing business there. We "repaired" a few TT's that have had this issue. MAN, it's terrible to see some of the shafts that come out of those poor machines. AND, the viscous coupling gets damaged at the same time.

    I do have my doubt of substantive HP/TORQUE improvement through exhaust change. It's mostly a sound change that people equate to improvement in performance. M

  2. Before I use addl diagnostic tools, maybe someone has had this problem?

    PSM shuts off with warning light going on. After scanning it revealed the R?F wheel speed sensor was malfunctioning. No Problemo...swap it out and Voila...comes on again. obviously interference in the signal. My question is has anyone had this problem with a turbo or Norm Aspirtated? thanks-Mark

  3. We just finished our umpteenth 996 Turbo clutch replacement due to wear. I feel a slight vibration (intermittent) upon depressing clutch rapidly. It is usually very smooth and easy. Is there addl procedures beside basic bleeding of slave cylinder. Very little is explained on the booster mechanism and diagnosis of it. There is also a slight "moan" from the P/S pump upon startup, although not all the time.

  4. Anyone with a REAL shop and REAL experience will concur with simple fact that "chipping" a normally aspirated "OEM" engine will result in a higher output of dollars to the service that is NOT performing any service at all!.

    Hi Ram....  In my personal opinion, there is little to be gained in chipping or re-flashing a naturally aspirated car these days.  The factories usually get all they feel they can from their motors without unduly pushing the limits of durability.  On a naturally aspirated motor, about the only thing that could make a difference (all else being equal) is the ignition timing.  A little more advance often gets a little more torque in low-mid range and a few horsepower at the top...but, with the possibility of "bouncing" off the knock sensor with pre-ignition/pinging depending on the quality of the fuel you can find.  The motor will produce the most just short of pre-ignition, but, controlling the ignition advance with the knock sensor/retard process is not the best way to manage the thing.  You can reduce the pre-ignition effect with a little more fuel, but, then the O2 feedback loop steps in to bring the mixture back toward stoichiometric (ideal combustion for the cats to deal with).  Sure, factories have to make assumptions about the quality of fuel you use, but, they are highly motivated to get all the performance they can out of your motor without introducing engine life-shortening conditions.  For what it's worth, a friend had his 993 motor chipped and tuned professionally on a chassis dyno by a Very Well Known race shop.  A few months later, as we tore through the empty roads of the American Desert, his motor holed a piston and broke several sets of rings due to pre-ignition.  You pays yer money and you takes yer chances.

  6. As I've done several 996 gearbox's, I'm continually surprised at the parts issues. I must get a ton of calls on them. Matter of factly, I think I blogged (bitched)on this exact subject several weeks agoAs the price continues to rise, I think I'll start to stock them. They are interesting to rebuild in that they are not traditional Porsche assembly procedures. I will let u guys know when I'm totally parts healthy on them. That broken rear issue is unusual in their failures. Mark

  7. I have intimate knowledge of the pitfalls of support when it comes to Porsche. I know how small the market is, consequently, I'm not surprised at the limited support (none) of other systems testers. However there is one tester that I'm investigating as we speak.

    It's just that Porsche tester is SO EXPENSIVE. This is done on purpose to reign in us 'INDEPENDENTS". Keep us "share croppers", or less. Having been employed by Porsche for several years, I'm familiar with their "paranoid complex". A CONTINUING SAGA OF SADNESS. Sadness because "WE" in the independent field have realistically helped in escalating this machine to it's current stature(on street and track), with a continuing "boot in our ***" approach by Porsche AG.

    I believe that the only reason they even offer the equipment is to appease any critique of their attitude of "us". It is totally disingenuiness on their part. The VERY STUPID (Porsche management) just can't expand their understanding of how the aftermarket could have escalated the position in the market, had they (stupid) been supportive of "we" (smart). Maybe they should be scared "****less". Come to think about it, they cannot even get into the minds of Americans to begin with, even WITH PCNA on board.

    The pricing is supposedly similar to dealer costs, however we know that the dealer has significant advantage based on new car sales profit, which "we" have none. You see, that in of itself proves they realistically have no intention to "look to the future" in a potentially volatile marketplace. Maybe they should be more concerned about how they have "hamstrung" "us" to begin with and readdress the whole mindset.

    Any OBDII tester that uses the ISO9141 hardware implementation layer (K-line) will work to read generic P-codes from the ECM. However, as you suggest, I don't think there is anything available aftermarket to read diagnostic trouble codes from the other modules in the car (air bag, PCM, ABS etc). A lot of the newer cars have the modules communicate over the CAN bus, but I don't know if there is a connection to the CAN bus at the diagnostic connector. 

    However, even if the CAN bus does go to the diagnostic connector, the software for the diagnostic machine will have to be written to decipher the Porsche protocol. Its a bit like there being a number of devices that use RS232, but unless you know the comms protocol, if you connected to it you would just get garbage.

    A person/company that could (but unfortunately won't) tackle this is Uwe Ross from Ross Tech LLC, author and distributor of Vag-Com for VW, Audi SEAT & Skoda vehicles. This program is just as good as the official workshop VAS5051/2, the equivalent of the PIWIS for Porsche. Unfortunately, the potential market for a reverse engineered PIWIS, is too  small to substantiate development.

  8. RMS leaks are traditionally NOT a factor on this particular engine series. Keep us updated on diagnostic results and correction. I have many clients with GT3's, no RMS leaks-a lot of off-track experiences though-:)-Mark

  9. Did you look under the passenger side carpet to see if there are mounting holes like the GT3 has for a bracket? On a GT3 they are under there are two plastic caps that get removed and the bracket attached next to the console on the passenger side.

    Well it seems that no one esle has attempted this as of yet...AND, I guess it's me (as usual) who must figure this one out. Before we had these forums I knew that I was flying on my own....Probably because I get the new cars rather quickly for performance/mods. Anyway....thanks for trying.
