  1. How does it hold the phone? I'm trying to find a good mount for my iPhone, but I need it to rotate. I'm thinking of fabbing one and finding a way to mount the gooseneck under the instrument cluster pod thing.
  2. I have a 99 C2 Cab w/6 speed. I bought it in September 2007 at 83k miles with a brand new clutch. I'm now at 94k. The motor and transmission and suspension seem to be really solid, but my electronics and plastic parts all seem to be dying. I guess they are about 10 years old now. Had to replace the MAF and EGR valves (or whatever they're called in Porsche lingo). I also had the oil filler tube develop cracks, which allowed the car to suck in air causing a lean mixture, high idle and a CEL. Now I'm getting an intermittent Brake Wear light even though there seems to be plenty of pad. I'm about to lose a couple of my coolant hoses, so I've ordered those to hopefully head off any disasters in that area. My 1966 Mustang had 340,000 miles on it when I sold it (although the engine and transmission had been rebuilt at least once). We'll see if I can get the same life out of this 996.
  3. I have a really hard time believe it's actually "lifetime" coolant. Every other car manufacturer on earth recommends a flush and fresh coolant every 2 - 3 years. Even in a perfectly sealed environment the heating and cooling of the fluid is going to break it down over time. Also, if there were any impurities in it at all, they're going to eventually settle out and create shale deposits throughout all the metal passages. I anyone does perform an actual flush with one of the detergent products, it's generally good practice to change your thermostat afterwards to avoid it becoming clogged/obstructed by any particles you may have knocked loose.
  4. I have a 1999 996 C2 Cabriolet with 94,000 miles on it that I bought last September. During the last oil change, I noticed some of my coolant hoses are looking pretty ragged and starting to bulge. I know that at least some of them have been changed before because they have the screw-tight hose clamps rather than the factory wire clamps, but I have no idea when they were changed. I wanted to just buy a full set of hoses, do a radiator flush and swap them all out at once. That's when my mechanic gave me a funny look and said, "You want to change them all out?" Apparently, nobody really does this. The hoses that run to the radiators seem to be in very good shape, so I'm not worried about them, but I want to change everything in the engine compartment. I started by ordering the hoses listed under cooling for the 996 on Pelicanparts.com. There were 4 with the following numbers: 996-106-625-57 996-106-622-54 996-106-626-53 996-106-621-57 They arrived and as I looked at them and look at the car and looked back at them and looked at the car again, I can't figure out where they even go. I have taken the air cleaner off to get a really good look, but they don't seem to fit the car at all. Anybody know if they do fit the car somewhere or if I should send them back? I went to the Porsche dealership and got the same stunned reaction that I wanted to replace all my hoses. It took quite a while for the parts guy to decipher to diagrams to figure out what I needed, and even my VIN came into play for one hose. The problem is, there's a lot of part numbers for these hoses and one supercedes another which supercedes another. Is there anyone who can check to tell me if these are the correct parts my 99 with a VIN higher than 66x 01814? 996-106-250-55 A 996-106-212-52 996-106-233-51 A 996-106-222-57 Those are the hoses with the most wear, so I think I'm just going to swap those for now even though my gut tells me I should probably do them all just to be on the safe side -- especially since it's proving so hard to find the right hoses and nobody keeps them in stock. Why have they changed the hose design so many times?
  5. I had a similar situation with my 99 996. It wasn't even giving a check engine light, but it wouldn't stay started. Turned out to be the mass airflow sensor. A local shop was able to diagnose with the Porsche code reader though.
  6. I like that. I was working on another project when I realized that a 1" x 2" board fits perfectly into the 996 ashtray, so I cut one to the correct length and screwed a cheap cupholder onto it. It fits tight enough to handle coke cans and coffee cups, but big gulps are too top heavy. I can slide it in and out of the ashtray at any time. I don't have a photo of the wood base, but I'll take one later. It would probably work even nicer if I sanded down the wood block a bit and glued some rubber over it, but I haven't bothered yet. <img src="http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w274/jetexasmusic/cupholder.jpg">
