  1. Also check the rubber in your transmission mount. When they start to deteriorate they will clunk.

    Does it also clunk when you step on the gas, let off, and step on the gas again? check the trans mount.

    Do you often hear a rattle/clunk when you shut the car off? Check the DMF

    Can the dual Mass Flywheel be twisted approx. 15mm in each direction, left/right, and does it return to approximately its initial position? If so it is good.

    Can the DMF be twisted beyond dim stated above without a noticeable increase in the spring force? Or is it fixed (no rotation?) if so bad

  2. With DRLs maybe a relay or something is hung up. Did the dealer set the DRLs, or was it one of the "pull this relay short it with a jumper wire" DRL hacks?

    Due to a German requirement German cars have a "Parking Light" position that enables you to activate the left or right side parking lights.

    On older Porsche all you had to do was push the turn signal stalk to the desired side to have lights on that side stay on after you parked. You did not have to leave the keys in the car to have this work.

    Our 996s have the same feature but you have to perform some additional gymnastics, look in your manual. My point is maybe that feature has a stuck relay? Try turning your passenger side park lights on to see if both stay on or it changes sides. That may give more clues as to where to look. Turn signal switch? Ign switch? Relay?

  3. Probably bolt right in. The biggest pain will be getting the electronics to work. 2003 is 2nd year for Vario-cam plus. You will need the ECU and most likely the wiring harness also. Crate engine from porsche =~$15k with rebuildable return

  5. On the "winter wheels" I would mount a 285/35-18 summer tire on the 11" wide rim. That is the size Porsche recommended when using 10" wide x 18" for my 2003 C2.

    Are you sure about the 35 profile? Most of the 285s that I have seen are 30 profile. That's what I run on my 996.

    285/30 is in my manual also. 35 was brain failure.

  6. We do not have a tiptronic in the 911.

    But my wife's Subaru Outback has paddle shifters!??! She uses engine braking often. Sometimes double down shifting. The ECU/TCU matches RPM/Gear so there is no lurch.

    I get a kick out of the fact that she does that without even thinking about it but when I downshift in the 911 she gets all "Slow Down! Slow down!" because the engine revs and the FisterD's bark a little.
