  2. renntechers, Has anyone ever heard something like this - For the last 2 days, on cold start, I hear a sound coming from the right of the engine that sounds like an electric band saw or blower.... It's very metallic and sounds like it revs up and then it's gone in 10-20 seconds. Not terribly loud, but noticable. It starts right after the car catches... Sort of strange... Any ideas?

  4. My PPI was just a quick look around - very superficial. The service manager actually said, "its a look, but don't touch overview." For my 2002 C4S, I felt a little better because the owner had all of his maintenance records, and the car was leaking no oil (the RMS and IMS seals had already been replaced). I road tested the car with the service manager, and everything seemed as it should be. I do have an extended warranty (that I will continue forever), just in case... I certainly think that for $300 they would have noticed an almost ready-to-die clutch. They told me I had less than 50% life on the clutch (just as a CYA move). Surely they will help cover most of the repair, seeing that an impending $2000 clutch job might have kept you from purchasing the car... which possibly means they defrauded you.
  5. Wintertime... I grew up in Wisconsin, and had enough winter (minus skiing) to last a life time. No, the C4S is with me now more for the widebody, suspension, and brakes. The AWD was just a bonus, and after driving the wife's A4 3.0Q, I started to believe in AWD stability in poor weather. Well, I am soon taking to the track so we will see how the car fares there. I was hoping to autocross last weekend, but we have a 7wk baby at home - he (and mom) deserve my attention first so... I was hoping to run with both PSM on and off to see the difference... We'll see next time.:)

I wish there was a PCNA engineer we could elicit an opinion from. The basic crux is this: if the AWD system needs slip, and PSM stops slip, then there is an issue. Is it possible that the sequence is this: (1) rear wheel slip -> VC increased viscosity -> front wheels get power -> car moves forward ... no PSM intervention -or- (2) rear wheel slip -> VC increased viscosity -> front wheels get power -> rear wheels continue to slip -> PSM traction control intervenes

Interesting article regarding awd systems Wwest, it must be setup so that the response of the diff is fairly quick, and the PSM must be set to wait until really crazy slip angles are detected before it reigns in the fun. Otherwise you are right - the VC would never come into play if the TC stopped the very thing that activates the diff.

Well - I've been thinking a lot about the AWD system recently (see my other thread)... and based on what I have learned... essentially, you should be able to jack the car up - put it in gear and engage the rear wheels. This should even at baseline rotate the fronts and the rears (95/5 split). There is no mechanical diff, but as the rears rotate (slip) the fronts should pick up. Obviously disable the PSM or the computer might freak.
  9. Arg... its still sort of confusing. But from all that I read I surmise that: the AWD system is probably most pronounced during 1. cornering: the car is rotated for several seconds, allowing the front/rears to rotate at different speeds therefore increasing the "thickness" in the VC and routing some power to the front to "pull" the car toward the exit (instead of the armco) 2. high speed cruising: where the different tire sizes (and their relative differences in friction) cause different rotational speeds... and... oh wait, they cant spin at different rates... oh crap, Im confused again...
  10. judge, I think your link is broken... it just sends me back to the main forums. ( i want to read, I want to read) I will definitely post about the autocross experience - and I know what you mean (first hand) about the PSM being a little distracting when it starts to intervene. To my (albeit simple) brain, PSM and a RWD C2 make sense, but Im just not sure how it is going to help you on an AWD car unless the PSM is mostly stability (when the arse is WAY out) more than traction control.
  11. Check out this site http://www.lsrpca.com/Calendar/calendar.htm. I've run before at GGP in my Honda S2000. Pretty large parking lot - the last course was nice... if its not crazy hot / raining / the baby is not screaming (aka wife is happy), Im going to try and make it.
  12. RennTechers, So I've searched (largely in vain) to read an in-depth description of the P-car AWD system and how it works with regard to traction and PSM. I get the whole viscous fluid thing, but I don't really get the sequence of events... for example... let's say you drop the clutch from a start: the rear wheels spin, which (simultaneously) thickens the "fluid" driving more power to the front wheels AND activates the PSM to control the wheelspin?? If this is true then, you should be able to turn off the PSM and do a smoking launch, because it should take at least a second for the front wheels to "get power" - meanwhile the back ones have laid a little rubber. However, I have been told doing such an action in my 4S will result in a clutch that explodes. Seeing that the center differential is not mechanically controlled, there should be a little lag to the front wheels getting power, no? If on the track, you begin to slide the car... the PSM kicks in AND the front wheels get more power... but doesn't the PSM cut the power... confusing... I ask because Im nearing my first autocross (in the c4S) and want to understand what will happen if the car goes into a drift, and/or how to launch the car at the start. Thanks to all!!
  13. tool pants, I have both the b&m and the Evo link sitting in a box waiting for install. Now I'm wondering if I should return it... (it was a gift). My biggest concern is the set screws - did you have any issues there? Wouldn't there be some advantage to having the Evo just for increased counter-weight on the shifting mechanism?
  14. I joined the night I bought the C4S... since then I've been able to learn about ( and participate in ) local events (concourse, AX) and am looking forward to my first DE once the car has new rear rubber. If you love (your) Porsche - I'd do it. ;)
  15. All (esp Loren), I was told the C4S didn't really come out until the end of the 2002 model year. As such, sometimes when shopping (day-dreaming) for new parts, I notice they wont have "C4S" listed until you change the model year to "2003". Since the 2003 cars had the MOST system... any way to know if the 2002 C4S cars had MOST?? Thanks!

  17. All, I have read here and there about a "3rd gear" syncro issue, but can't really find any relavant data. I have an issue under WOT shifting from 2nd to 3rd - it never goes smoothly - always seems to be "caught" before engaging. Most likely I just need to become more familiar with the gearbox - but with the warranty expiring... if there was some known 3rd gear issue, I'd like to learn about it. thanks!
  18. Thanks Loren! A little bit off (my own) topic... but how in the world can the C4S have performance numbers close to the standard C2 with the same engine, same gearing, and more weight?! It should be a considerable dog, I would think.
  19. Everyone always says the C4S is a Turbo, but without the turbos. However, doesn't the Turbo use the older 964 engine block (not the same one as the C4S)?

All, I have been trying to read nearly every post regarding strange "thuds" but have not found one that describes what my car is doing... because Im obsessive compulsive, it is driving me nuts -- any and all help/suggestions appreciated. Symptoms: There is what sounds like a golf ball rolling (an inch or two) around in a door / body panel that makes a dull, low pitched thud when you start to accelerate, and then when the car comes to a complete stop. It has no association with rate of acceleration / speed / turning / clutch operation. Occasionally, it also vibrates - almost shudders when the car is at a standstill. Of course I looked for anything loose that could be moving around - but I found nothing. The sound seems like it is coming from the left rear (maybe even right behind the b-pillar). Differential: I have found references to a loose sway bar, so will look at that tonight... but beyond that, I cant determine if it is drive train / chassis, or just some stupid trim piece. Thanks!!
