  1. I've been researching coolant leaks, which is an obvious well talked about problem here on Renntech. But I can't find any posting which addresses an additional symptom of my problem. I have the usual residue under the trunk carpet and the "old" cap which needs to be replaced with the 01 version. I'm going to start with the cap and wait and see on the expansion tank. But I've never noticed ANY coolant leaking under the car, which seems to be a major clue that the coolant tank or cap is bad. Here's where my story differs: While taking out the seats to investigate my heated seats not working, I discovered a lot of sitting liquid under the drivers seat UNDER the carpet. The carpet was sticky...not really wet. All the foam padding was saturated too. After pulling back the carpet...green coolant liquid was sitting in all the wells up to the brake/accelerator pedals. I found the same under the passenger side too. The engine has never run hot. No smoke ever. Temp light has never "red-lined" There was still about 3-4 inches of coolant left in the tank. The loss doesn't apear major, but it's really ruined the carpet. AFter reading about coolant leaks here, I'm beginning to think it's the water pump. (?) CAN ANYBODY VERIFY THAT THE WATER PUMP WOULD BE ALLOWING COOLANT TO ENTER THE INTERIOR COMPARTMENT LIKE THAT? It just seems really odd since the metal lid separating the engine compartment from the car's interior is padded and almost water tight. Thanks, Joe St. Louis, MO
  2. Well, I said I'd post back when I got the pictures of the carpet turned over. Not worth taking. More bad news. The cushion material under the carpet was SATURATED with green liquid. There was a puddle in the seat/frame well as well. This may be why the heated seats aren't working. (something I was attempting to look into when all this came about) The saturation in the cushion material went all the way to the front near the brake and accelarator area. Wet on the passenger side too. I hate to admit it, but I'm not sure what the liquid is. This must be the strange smell I've been getting. I did find that the power steering fluid was empty. That's the dipstick near the air filter, right? Anyway...completely empty. Could that mean a leak somewhere that's filtered down under the carpet? I ripped out the saturated cushion glued to the carpet, but assume it's going to require rooting around to find the leak and then hunting down a new carpet system altogether. Thanks for everyone's input. Anybody know of a good salvage place online that may sell carpet systems. I'll try Oklahoma Foreign first (thanks Mike!). Joe
  3. I'm removing the sections today. I'll post back with pictures of what it looks like under the carpet. The upper half of the mystery gunked carpet does have burn marks which is why I thought the heat source came from the engine. And thanks for the boxcar racing forum referral. I'll be checkin them out later today too. Maybe I'll skip the carpet altogether, and go with hardwood flooring. LOL.
  4. Take a look at these photos. Anybody got a clue what the heck the hard, rubber/plastic like residue is? I'm guessing maybe something melted caused by extreme heat from the engine. I'm not the original owner, obviously. The seat isn't damaged, but it appears as if the heat pad under the carpet is a little burned looking. I have no maintenance history on the vehicle and no carfax history of damage/repairs. Something happened, and I thought I'd throw this out there to see if the mystery can be solved. The black stuff is really hard, like plastic. And the area around it on the carpet feels greasy. In any case, there's always been a faint unusual smell in the car I couldn't pin down. Wonder if it's from a fire extinguisher? The carpet is a little greasy so I'm cleaning this week. I guess I'll just buy some similar looking carpet, cut out the damaged section, and replace. Anybody have any idea how much a whole new carpet for that area of the car would run me? Thanks in advance for your ideas. Joe St. Louis, MO
  5. No, this was Parktown Imports...I assume that's what you meant by the "other one". BUT...I'm glad you posted, because I was thinking about heading to Plaza for a second opinion on the vehicle's overall condition. I'll think I'll keep looking around now! And thanks for the thread re: repairing the motor mount. Good stuff. I think I'll tackle this repair by myself based on everyone's great info. If I survive, I'll post back with results...good or bad!
  6. That's what I was leaning towards, but couldn't get the confirmation from the dealership. I'm gonna put her up on jacks this weekend and have a look see. Can you tell me any tale-tell signs to look for? Will anything be looser on one side vs. the other to know exactly which mount I need to spend my time on? AND ONE MORE QUESTION. About buying a new one (if I can't repair it). Are all the mounts the same for the Boxster or are front ones different from back...left different from right? May sound stupid, but I want to be sure of everything I do with this baby before I waste money or do any damage learning to DIY. Thanks again!
  7. Can any DIY'er give me your opinion on this? I took my '01 Boxster w/ 95K mi to the dealership recently with known issues when I bought her. There's a distinct "rubbing" noise coming from the rear. The sound seems to be in conjunction with the rotation of the tire/s. I took it the dealership here in good 'ol Saint Louie, Missouri and got a report after asking for a complete and total list of things that needed to be repaired or replace....and I specifically mentioned the above issue with the noise from the rear. Among the things they told me, was that I had a broken motor mount and inner tie rod that needed replacement. Can these two issues cause the sound coming from the rear? I'm skeptical because several things I know that need replacement, like third brake lights or a short in the radio were left out. Plus, they told me it would take 3 hours. They gave it back to me after only 1 hour of looking at it. I've already replaced the ignition switch (their cost = $489.68 parts/labor) for about $450 less than what it would've cost to have them do it. I'm leaning towards not taking it back to them if anyone can dispute their findings regarding the sound from the car and what they found. They never even really confirmed that either of the two above issues were causing the sound. I appreciate anyone's input! Joe St. Louis, MO
  8. I'm kind of with "fitsintite" on his question: How do we verify the part is damaged? Thanks for all your suggestions in advance!
  9. Man, I hate to ask since this radio-code thread has really overburdened Loren. But here goes... Becker 1 CDR-220 4462 Y5053643 Can you help out yet another enthusiast trying to return tunes to his travels? Thanks, thanks, thanks. Joe St. Louis, MO 2001 Boxster
  10. I'm on it! Thanks for the insight. I'll be back and report any abnormalities regarding both your suggestions.
  11. Thanks to everyone for all the helpful info I've learned thus far concerning my 2001 Boxster. Just joined this forum and it's great! I've owned it for only 2 weeks and have already done al ot of trim and detail work based on everyone's advice and knowledge. Much appreciated! Now for what I came here for.... My '01 has had a "rubbing" noise coming from the rear since I took ownership. It's very noticeable at all speeds when I've got the top up, but barely audible with the top down. I've got a feeling it was was wrecked, but haven't gotten around to doing a Carfax history report. Doesn't really matter, as I would have bought it anyway (got a great price on it). Can anyone give me some possibilities? There's no noticeable performance issues and no wobbling or vibrations to indicate something is loose. I guess I'm looking for possibilities I can explore before taking it to the dealer and getting a huge repair bill before even owning it for a month. I'm hoping it just might be a brake/pads issue. I know there's not a lot of background on this one, but any brainstorming would give me a little hope that I can keep it out of the dealer's workshop for just a little while. Thanks in advance! Joe G St. Louis, MO
