  1. When my level dropped, I could hear the motor working but the top would go up and down very slowly. Within a few times using the convertible, I would no longer hear the motor working once the clam shell got into the correct position. After adding hydraulic fluid, everything worked perfectly.
  2. I have a 1999 996 carbriolet. The car was working fine. Last night the car alarm went off for no reason. I went outside and turned the alarm off without any problems using my remote control on the key fob. The next day, the car started fine and then it stalled within about 5-10 seconds. It seemed like when I pressed on the gas peddle, the engine did not rev and the tach did not move. I tried started the car a few more times and it turned over, only to stall immediately, again seeming like the car would not rev. I remembered reading something about the immoblizer and locked and unlocked the car a few times with the key. The car then started and seems to be functioning ok without any warning lights, but it seems to be idling a little rough. I have not driven the car yet. Any thoughts about what happened? Any suggestions? Eric
  3. I purchased a Passport Solo because I did not want to have any wires showing and this unit got the best reviews as a battery operated unit. Don't waste your money. The unit gives very little warning, so by the time it goes off you already can see the police. It is my understanding that the Passport units requiring a plug into the lighter are more sensitive and accurate.
  4. Does the clam shell move? If it does, but the top wont go up or down, you're hydraulic fluid may be low. Check previous forums for information on checking the adding hydraulic fluid. This is a common problem for older 996s. I have added fluid 3 times to my car. Got it down to a total of 15 min from start to finish. Easy to do. Eric
  5. If you ever decide to resell your car, I don't think what stereo unit you have will make much of a different in resale value. The newer units offer you so much more than adding sirrus/xm. You'll get aux in, USB in, HD radio, blue tooth, etc. Many units give you the option of choosing the amber color, so the car will still look original. I have a JVC unit with the color change option and am please, but the blue tooth audio streaming is not great. Also, forget about using your bluetooth phone in the cab with the top down. Try Crutchfield.com and you'll find a lot of options.
  6. No question about it, whenever possible go with the glass. First, with the glass you can use the rear defroster. If you live in a humid climate (I live in Florida), you will use the defroster often in the morning. Also, the plastic windows eventually yellow and crack. I owned a boxster in the past and had water leakage via a small crack in the plastic window. If you have (or are going to purchase) plastic, take a look at GAHH convertible top replacements. The quality is excellent. The fit and finish is close to original, except the rear window is a little smaller. I currently have a used 996 1999 with a replacement GAHH top and am very pleased.
  7. I had the same problem in my 1999 C4. Turned out not to be the tube, but a cracked washer pump. Had to replace the pump and all is well. Not too expensive.
  8. While my cabriolet top was in service mode, I found this plastic piece on top of the carpet. It also had a small spring nearby. On the inside cover are the following numbers: 11104A PTL 4010-PPT20-SW I have a 1999 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. I think it has something to do with moving or protecting the cabriolet top when it is getting lowered prior to the shell covering it. I think it is located where the rear hinge locks the back of the cabriolet top to the car body. Please help identify the part, let me know what it does and where it goes and where to purchase a new part. Thanks, Eric
  9. My horn is beginning to honk at the slightest touch. It is probably worn bushings on the airbag retaining frame. The part is about $50. Not too bad. Can anyone provide directions on how to get to the airbag retaining frame to remove the old one and install a new one? Easy fix or difficult?
  10. Finally got around to taking off the rear wheel. Inspected the front drain and yup! totally blocked drain. Seems this is the primary reason for water behind the rear seats and rear foot well. Picture below.Easy to clean and drain worked fine after. Testing drain by pouring water into the drain behind the speaker and now drains quickly. I suggest everyone keeping an eye on these drains.
  11. Tim: I don't know the parts number, but had the same problem. What worked for me (by experimentation) was to press the button (which allows you to move the hand brake) in and out many times. I would press it in and let it pop out quickly, over 50 times and I have not had the same problem since. Worth a try.
  12. Like many of you with older 996 cars, I found water under the carpet behind the drivers seat and under the rear seat. I know the primary problem are blocked drain outlets, but I think I have a more serious problem. I put the convertible top in service mode and inspected the drain holes. All clear. I followed the drain lines per the diagrams and found this black tubing that I assume is the drain tube. The tube is split and I can't figure out if I just insert it back into the proper place (have no idea where that would be) or if new tubing needs to be installed. Any help would be appreciated. One photo is looking at the tube from the outside of the car (looking from the left rear area). The other photo is looking through the rear speaker area ( speaker removed).
  13. The car as not hit anything as far as I know. I left the car at the mechanics for 5 hours, so I have no idea if anything happened when I was not there. I guess anything is possible. I know these people and would be surprised if anyone took the car out for a joy ride, but anything is possible.
  14. I had my serpentine belt replaced yesterday on my 1999 C4. Everything with the belt replacement went well. However ..... my car is not running like it did when I drove the car into the shop. #1. My horn was blowing after I touched the steering wheel (cover over the air bag). I had to pull on it towards me to stop it. Now, whenever I lightly touch it, it blows and at times continues to blow until I pull it towards me. #2. The steering wheel does not seem straight. Seems to be turned slightly to the right. #3. At high speeds (70+MPH), the car seems to be pulling slightly to the right. I am going to call the mechanic, but wanted to get you input. Any thoughts about what is going on and/or suggestions to fix the problem. I always find the knowledge base and experience of the forum members to be invaluable. Thanks Eric
  15. So I'm changing the air filter and while installing the plastic cover, one of the 7 screws falls into the engine. I look around for it and can't find it, but also does not seem to be stuck in any belts. Car drives fine. Then when getting my oil changed, they show me my belt needs replacement. Seems the screw was rubbing against it. Got the screw out and car runs fine. So here is my question. How difficult is it to change the belt. Seems easy from the DIY directions. If I have my mechanic replace it, what is a reasonable charge? Eric
  16. Jimmy: I have an extra one from my old boxster. email me at erickaplan@mindspring.com. Eric
  17. I have a few oil filters from my the Boxster I used to own. It was a 2000 with 2.7 L engine. I now have a 1999 C4 996. Does anyone know if I can use these filters for the 996? The guy at Autozone says they are the same, but I wanted to make sure. Also, they have been sitting in the garage for about 2 years. Do these filters go bad over time? Thanks, Eric
  18. When I had a Boxster, I had the amber tinted with dark tint and it looked good. I think the tinting cost about $75.00. If you don't like it, you can always remove it.
  19. The clicking sound may be the ebrake. When the top is not moving, is the ebrake light on , on the dashboard? If not, you may need to get the sensor/contact repaired. I have heard this clicking sound a few times when my ebrake light was not functioning. I had to press the button about 20 times and tap it a few times on the side of the ebrake to get the sensor to work. Once it did, the top words fine and the clicking sound went away.
  20. I had the same problem and after getting some help from the forum and reading the DIY, I have successfully added hydraulic fluid to the system and it works perfectly. I am by no means mechanically inclined. If I can do this work, anyone can. I purchased the porsche hydraulic fluid from suncoast. The most challenging part of this fix is the small space available and the small opening to add more hydraulic fluid. I recommend using a small syringe and go to any auto parts store and purchase a small amount of flexible rubber tubing. The diameter must be small since the opening where you put the fluid is very tiny. Good luck! Eric
  21. I called SunCoast and they gave me a quote. About $700 each for the leather. Way more then I think they are worth. I'll wait to see if I can find a pair on Ebay over time. If anyone wants to see me an unwanted pair, let me know. Eric
  22. You can spend a lot of money adding parts to these cars, but when it comes to resale, do not expect the car to be worth much more. Carreras like to be driven. The fact that this car has sat most of its life would be a turn off for me. Given todays market and the current economy, I would estimate the car is worth from $21,000 to about $27,000.
