  1. I've had my 987S for two months now and an incredible 2000 miles. Other than a scratch on the windshield that I whined about in another thread - no problems. But - in my neverending quest in breaking things - I asked my 14 yo son to dust the interior while I did the outside.... He manged to jimmy the airvents and pop a small fork like clip off the back of the vertical sliders. So now can't adjust the airflow up or down. I managed to snare one clip, the other is down in the vent somewhere. No idea how to pop it back into place. Now the embarassing part. I asked my kid to show me how he managed to do this to two of the four vents. He said he just wiggled it down and sideways... I said "LIKE THIS" and manged to break another one! It wasn't forced or jiggled hard or anything just popped off and down the inside of the vent. Anyone else or am I dummy of the year? Any and all feedback appreciated Brad Now I've got this in the wrong section! needs to be in the Boxster section, my apologies. B
  2. The motion sensor is enabled by a switch that is closed by the top latch engaging the recess. You can get a red plastic clip that fits on, depresses the switch and makes the alarm think the top is closed. I bought one for $5.00 here in Canada so prob about three bucks in the states. I don't have the part # but just go to the dealer and mumble about a clip and point lots towards your car and he'll figure out what you want. Warning- the motion sensor will take a moment to trigger the alarm, I wouldn't leave your digital camera etc. on the seat while you run into the store! Brad

  4. It's the damndest thing! My 987S is only a month old and I managed to get something caught under the wiper. Now I've got a scratch in an arc right across my vision. It's 14" long and deep enough that it catches a fingernail. If it was on the other side I'd just live with it but I now have to look at (and through it) everyday. Is something like this repairable like they do with chips or do I just have to bite the bullet and have the whole shield replaced? Any advice, info or experiences appreciated. Brad
  5. Paul I have "palpated" many body parts when I was a med student and intern but can't remember ever "palpating" shocks! Am considering giving my Boxster a rectal exam to check out the soot in the exhaust tips but will hold off on any more invasive procedures at present. Take care. Brad (Psychiatry)

  9. My Dad was an auto parts wholesaler for years and started bringing this goo in in the mid 1970's. He had a flat on the Alaska Highway in northern B.C. Used the stuff on the tire and continued calling on customers for another 600 miles. When he got back home got the tire fixed just because he thought he should! Ended up telling this story for years and sold a ton of the stuff till he retired in 1988. I've used it once on a passenger car and drove for 50 miles at highway speeds till I got to a tire shop. They complained about the goop making a mess but put a patch on it. Last year my kid managed to peel the tire on our John Deere tractor off the rim and I could not get it to hold air after. Used the goop and it's been fine. Now none of this is with high perf. tires or cars but I'll always carry a can. Brad
  10. Corey 1- Nope- you're not nutz! 2- What's wrong with a little OCD? I just waxed my 04 Murano- it's Canada, winter, 0 degree's, snow etc,etc. smdb01us - I used to park my old Jag next to my neighbor's MB in an underground parkade. After a few month's my door looked like a ripple chip, just couldn't believe the guy. You never know who or what is parked next to you. Take no chances. Brad

  12. Toolpants I notice that this picture shows "bumperettes" on each side of the rear licence plates that are not on other 987 photos. Does this mean some versions i.e. for the U.K. or ROW will have them and NA cars won't or what? Does change the appearance of the butt-end a fair bit Thanks Brad
  13. Ad Sach I figure when the car gets here in late April I will have to drive 4-5 hours after work each night doing exactly that.... playing with all the buttons and knobs. Great thread on heel and toe shifting which I'll have to learn. The 987 S I ordered is Seal grey with Sea Blue full leather. My budget is a little tight so just a sport steering wheel, Sport Chrono package and windstop. I live in CANADA so heated seats are an absolute must. My wife and I go to the Rocky Mountains a lot (a nice 4 hour drive) and even in the summer the heater is running first thing in the morning. BTW if any of you americans come up to Alberta drive the highway from Banff to Jasper. Inredible scenary and a great twisty mountain road! Take care Brad
  14. Ad sach This is agony.... first I have to wait 5 months for the car to be built and shipped here and THEN I have to putz around at 3-4000 rpm for 2000 miles!!! Yikes. I'm currently driving my winter car, a 2004 Murano, and it's a great ride but I'm making vroom vroom noises while I'm doing it and my kid says "you thinking about the porsche Dad?" Thanks for the info Brad
  15. Adsach So during the entire breakin I can "only" go 100 mph??? For the last 5 yrs I drove a Nissan Exterra (175 hp) that Icouldn't get over 90 mph!! Brad
  16. Is the reinforced jackpoint on the chassis aluminum or steel? Does it need to be protected against corrosion as the paint is chipped off by the jackstands? Thanks Brad

  18. Thanks to all for the advice! The reason for all the questions are twofold. This is going to be my very first Porshe and I really want to do things right from the start. All the test drives I took at the dealership where in a 04 986 and the sales guy told me to keep the revs below 4200. After driving SUV's all my life (and owning a 1988 Jag) the boxster had to be the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel even with the rpm restriction. The urge to floor it will be there but the desire to get the best possible reliabilty will hopefully overcome it. Secondly, During breakin I will be driving 30 miles a day at a constant 55 mph so I guess I should speed up and slow down as much as possible without ticking off the freeway psychopaths that inhabit our roads. Should I change gears every few minutes to vary the RPM's??? Like 3 min in 3rd then a few in 4th etc etc? Brad
  19. Wardhog I quess that's where my confusion is coming from. I've always believed in following the manufacturers recomendations- afterall they built the car. I gather that Porsche Canada rec. a 1800 mile breakin. Revs under 4200, varying revs and vehicle speed, no hard braking etc. Yet when I go to forums on the net the 1000 mile comes up all the time. Because I do a lot of driving living out in the country I try to get at least 100,000 miles on our vehicles and preferably more with frequent and complete maintenance. I've also seen references that it's OK to rev up to the redline occasionally during breakin so I quess I'm wondering what the consensus is among Porsche owners. Adsach Thanks for the advice- Will join PCA soon and the local chapter. Nearest Race track is 200 miles away but the local club runs autocross events on a runway at Army base all summer long and it might be a good way to learn from people that know way more than I do.   20. I'm not a Porshe owner yet but that will change next April when I get my MY05 987. So I'm new to this and sorta like a virgin contemplating her upcoming wedding night - kinda excited and kinda scared! So here goes - what is the most commonly used break in on a new engine? Different people seem to have very different ideas. Any and all info appreciated. Secondly, how do I drive this car for max enjoyment yet reasonable reliability? Do I baby it and watch the revs all the time or can you drive it to it's potential every time you take it out? I know this is a vague question but want lots of opinions. It will be a daily driver 40 miles round trip to work every day at 50 mph on the freeway- I do very little city driving. Thanks Brad Edmonton Canada
