  1. Dale Yes- That was me you met at Norden. You must be a mind reader! I had been detailing and waxing my car. No problems and then this message came up. Also the fault message goes out and I lose all my dash lighting when I turn on the signal lights. Turn off the signal and the fault light comes back up and the dash lights come back on. Talked with Gord and he said he'd replaced a few front control modules. I'm driving the car as is till I can get it in. AX is going well the R-compound tires make a big difference. Going for a DE at Race City in Calgary this Friday. Take care. Brad Friedrick
  2. Here's what happened. Had my Porsche battery maintainer plugged into the cigarette lighter. Realized one of the windows was down. Put the key in the ignition and turned the ignition on but didn't start the engine. Put the window up. Turned the ignition off. Now I have a "System Fault - Take car to Workshop" message. Have driven the car 3 times and everything works fine. The idiot light will go out for 5 seconds or so but comes back on. So what have I done and what do I do? Have a DE coming up next week and probably can't get to the dealer before then. Should I wait and see if it cancels out with a few more driving cycles? Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds? or borrow an OBD reader? The car is an 05 987S. 12,000 miles and nary a problem till now. Any advice appreciated. Brad in Edmonton
  3. FWIW- I bought 4 tire dollies from a local auto parts place for $90 Canadian. They have steel wheels and were designed for moving semitrailer tires around. The curvature of the dollies matched my tires pretty good. My Boxster sat on them all winter long and no flatspotting whatsoever. The great part (the reason I bought them) was that I could roll the whole car around the garage and fit all three vehicles in our two car garage! Brad Friedrick
  4. Mark- My kid bought me a can of this stuff for my Birthday last year. Spray it on wipe it off. Ididn't think it made any difference at all. Certainly not worth the price. I have a cheap can of turtle wax platinum car wax. wipe a bit on my wheels after a wash. by the time I finish the 4th wheel it's ready to be wiped off the first. Way better than anything else I've tried for brake dust. This wax actually looks good on the whole car... Still my p-car gets the whole Optimum than P21S treatment. Several on this and other forums swear by Rejex for wheels but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Brad
  5. Wads --Here in Canada Octane is RON + MON divided by 2 I think. Where I am we can only get 91 octane "premium" but one chain has 94 octane ethanol blend. I've never tried it because of the vague warning in the manual about ethanol blend gases. During the summer I go out to the coast where Chevron carries 94 octane- hence my original question. With your experience I may have to try the ethanol blend. Brad
  6. To all, When switching from 91 to 94 octane, how many cycles will it take for the ECU to recognize the higher octane and adjust the various parameters? My car is an 05 987S. Brad
  7. To all--- My lugbolts are looking grungy and it's winter here and I'm bored. I want to beadblast them and give them a shot of clearcoat. So the question is will beadblasting (#6 beads) remove the hardened outer few thou's causing galling etc later on or can I have at it? Brad
  8. I researched this very carefully last year, Bought a V-1 and will never drive without it. When you look at what the points will do to your auto insurance premiums (at least in Canada) it's one of the cheapest upgrades you can do. Brad

  10. Michael- how are you attaching the harness? I'm interested in this but haven't figured out what brackets etc to use. Also how are you running the sub belt? Any info appreciated Brad
  11. I have the sport chrono in my 987S ( no PASM- standard suspension.) The sharpened throttle response is addictive esp for getting the revs right on a downshift. However the real advantage of the sport chrono is the different limits for the PSM and ABS. Our local PCA club has access to a military runway for Auto-X. Very high speed for an Auto-x up to 100 mph then brake hard for a left sweeper. Spins are O.K. because you can't hit anything at all. The PSM in normal setting will kick in and straighten you out anytime you start to slide. In other words it doesn't allow much of a slip angle. With the Sport chrono in "sport" setting it backs off the PSM limits substantially and you can slide the car a bit without the stability system kicking in. As well the ABS behaves differently. The system will allow both front wheels into the ABS range without the PSM defaulting to the "full on" setting. So for a complete novice like myself I can drive the car (with sport chrono on and PSM completely off) balls to the wall at Auto-X where a spin is just a smoky learning lesson. Then at the track where a loss of control results in serious damage to the car or me or both I can have the PSM on but with more liberal limits. This is why every Porsche I'll ever have will include this option. Brad
  12. Oli I don't have pictures but can describe as best I can. In the middle of each air vent is the verical slider which adjusts the horizontal louvers up and down. On the back is a plastic clip with two fingers about 1.5 cm long which engages the louvers. This clip falls off the back of the slider and into the vent. If you fish it out there's no way to snap it back in to the slider. They don't seem to have been securely attached in the first place. As I said I came across a lot of guys in the U.K. that had this problem when I first searched the net 5 months ago. Brad
  13. jwolfe Welcome to the club! My 987S had three out of four break in the first month. I did a search and found 8 or 9 guys on the UK sites had the same problems with the 987 air vents. In my case the porsche tech had to pull the entire stereo unit out of the dash to get the center vents out through the bottom. A 2 hour job for him so unless you're bored or masochistic take it in. The replacement parts seem to be OK. 5 months and they haven't fallen off. Brad

  15. ar38070 Thanks for your quick response and info. The data for my street tires(PS2's) is from the Michelin website and the A048's from the Tire Rack specs. The one Porsche Tech I talked to confirmed that the stock setup is configured for diff dia front and rear but is unable to tell me what I may expect with off-spec tire sizes. I agree that understeer issues are the least of my concerns, getting good quality instruction at DE's is most important. My only reason for dedicated track tires is that I can chew them up through inexperience rather then the much more expensive street tires. I never realized it when I bought the car but they really have made things difficult with these oddball sizes. Any ideas???? Brad
  16. I'm looking for an R-compound DOT tire. I'd like a dedicated set for Auto-X and track. The 987S uses 235/40-18 fr and 265/40-18 rear street tires. So the front and rear are different diameters. The PSM + ABS are set for these differing rotational speeds, 790 revs/mile and 819 revs/mile. This is a 3.57% delta. I can get a set of Yoko A048 for a great price... size 225/40-18 fr and 265/35-18 rear. Revs are 829 and 822 respectively. Will this work without the TC, PSM or ABS getting pissed at me? Secondly, will the increased understeer with the 225's up front give more problems? I'm a track novice. All input appreciated Brad
  17. My 987S is four months old and I have 6000 kms on it ( 3600 miles). I had all sorts of burning smells for the first few months. Now after a hard run I get hot brake pad smells esp after Auto-X. The Porsche mechanics told me not to worry. Brad

  20. The "safety triangle" you use when you're stopped on the highway cuz you floored it for a few miles 2 days after the low fuel warning light came on! (This happened to a "friend" nudge-nudge) Brad

  22. Thanks- I know the warranty will cover it but taking the car to the dealer is a hassle as I live way out in the country. I haven't shone a light in the vent then so the Torx screw is inside the vent? Thanks
