  1. Here is my dyno pull from the other day. I'm going to the drag strip again tonight, our PCA region doesn't have any auto-x this month and my next track session is at Sebring on March 27th. The drag strip isn't as fun as a road course or auto-x, but it beats sitting at home watching Speed channel.
  2. Does anyone know what the stock fuel injectors are in a stock Boxster 2.7?
  3. The stock brakes faded badly at Sebring, hence the upgrade. At Sebring I was getting fade as I was stopping for the hairpin with the stock rotors/caplipers/racing pads. Some tracks you can scrub off speed but not Sebring, you gotta use the brakes.
  4. I put a set of Brembo F50 on my Boxster because I was exceeding the capabilities of the stock setup at the track. I had racing pads, stainless braided lines and racing pads with the stock brakes and still ran into fade. I don't notice any with my new brakes! Tom
  5. Speaking of TechArt stuff, I was at the drag strip last night, a guy with another Boxster was there, last night was cool, there was a twin turbo V12 Mercedes and a Ferrari 308, anyway, the guy with the other Boxster has the TechArt springs for his car, it lowers it and stiffens it but not too much to create a too stiff ride. He said the handling is dramatically improved, I'm going to do those springs in my car too.
  6. FVD does the conversions and they also sell the parts to do the conversion yourself. The installation hardware is $695, the air filter kit is $425, the Motronic DME exchange is $1500 and the headers are $1250. Plus the engine cost itself and the labor. FVD is 800-274-2220, ask for Bo, tell him that Tom from Sarasota sent you. Even if you don't do the conversion, their catalog has tons of goodies in it. http://www.fvd-web.com/fvd-usa/index1.html
  7. I remember where I ordered the shift knob from, it was from New Dimensions, 800-637-2781.
  8. Another thing to keep in mind, make sure the EVO intake box is tight against the side of the engine bay, if it's not, every kind of road dirt will get in there and clog your air filter. I lose 3/10ths and 4 mph in the 1/4-mile when my filter and MAF are dirty.
  9. Cargraphic headers (or either FVD or Dansk), Cargraphic sport cats (or FVD), whatever your muffler of preference is (the "sport" ones only add about 3-4 hp), a 12 lb aluminum flywheel, bored throttle body, Unichip or an appropriately reburned Motronic, EVO intake, lighter racing shells (seats), lighter brakes (aluminum hats), leave the spare tire in the pits, and lose 25-30 lbs yourself. It adds up quick in terms of dollars (personal weight loss is free, but time consuming). It's not like a turbo or supercharged car where you just give it more boost and more fuel and gain some horsepower. If you do the headers, cats, muffler, ECU and EVO intake you will have about 302 hp, my friend Joe dynoed a Boxster S with those mods and thats what it had. The 12 lb flywheel will let your engine spin easier, I have one in mine and it's pretty cool. It's not as bad as people will tell you it is, as far as taking off in 1st gear. Where I notice clutch chatter is when I'm in reverse, like backing out of a parking spot and trying not to go fast. If you want to go faster in a straight line, plan on spending $8-11k just on engine stuff, maybe $2800 or so on new seats if they are the Porsche/Recaros, plus about $6k on the racing brakes, although you can do what I'm doing on mine, I ordered Brembo F50 for the front (they are lighter with aluminum hats, plus they are 14" for better fade resistance) and leave the back ones alone. It's cheaper that way, $3200 or so. One tip I know from experience, before your EVO is installed, wash it as best you can, those things are oversoaked with oil from the factory (EVO uses aFe filters), and let it dry overnight before use. Even then, there will still be oil in the filter which will probably coat your MAF, slowing you down because the MAF won't read the correct airflow. Order some spare filters that you can use while the others are drying from being cleaned. I use K&N RF-1039. You can clean the MAF to as-new working order with some 91% isopropyl alcohol and a Q-Tip. Another tip, to get the MAF out you need a tamper-proof Torx T-20 bit which you can get at Sears for $20 in a set. I ordered my spare K&N online but I can't remember where. Here is the chart for K&N filters http://www.knfilters.com/universal/univrndtap.htm The aFe that comes with the EVO is a 5" base dia, 8" overall length, 3-1/2" top dia and fits on a 3" pipe. Anyway, have fun, you can transfer your car into something pretty mean, have at it.
  10. I posted a pic earlier: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1092 Tom
  11. I forget where I ordered mine now, heh, but they've been a VW place forever and I guess now they've gotten into VW stuff. I misplaced the receipt after a Superbowl party. It was $399, I love the feel of the knob, plus it looks cool. Tom
  12. I have Sport Technos, 18x10 in the rear with no spacers and 265/35-18 and there isn't much room. I'm told that if I get spacers I can put 285s.
  13. My dealer has them, Suncoast Porsche. Their phone # is 941-923-1700, ask for Ryan. Tell him Tom with the black Boxster sent you. I just replaced my factory installed carbon fibre knob with an aluminum TechArt which I like a lot better. I'll add a snapshot of it tomorrow, it looks really sweet. Tom
  14. I put a set of 18" Sport Technos on my Boxster, they're wrapped with Bridgestone Pole Position S03. They're pretty good tires, they grip well in dry and wet. I took second place at Zephyrhills, FL PCA auto-x in SS2. It was my first time to an auto-x. I'm going to get a set of 18s with racing rubber on them for track use. Tom
  15. Performance Products sells a rear diffuser that looks the same as the one pictured except it attaches to your current bumper cap without replacing everything.
  16. Get a Dansk sport muffler, there is no resonance and it gives a slightly deeper and slightly louder tone. I ran with the Dansk by itself for a little while, but now I have Cargraphic headers and Cargraphic sport cats, now it sounds like a proper sports car. You don't have to go all the way like that but the Dansk sport muffler is a real nice addition and it's stainless steel with a really nice build quality, Performance Products has them on sale for $760. Don't put a used muffler on your car, I think that's just asking for trouble with corrosion if it's been sitting around for a while - I don't think the factory exhaust is stainless at all. Tom
  17. I think I found a good solution - the Blitz SUS cone air filters. The element is made from a stainless steel mesh and doesn't require oil yet it flows much better than paper. I found it while searching the internet for paper cone filters which don't seem to exist. Now I just have to take out the blue cotton gauze filter that came with my EVO intake and measure it plus the tube and order a Blitz SUS universal. I cleaned my 125-version MAF sensor with some isopropyl alcohol and Q-Tips but I don't know if it's still good or not, there was some black dirt on the leading edge of the exposed thermistor. I'll let everyone know how the Blitz SUS works out. Tom
  18. Jean, I'll get some numbers by Fri Jan 16th, I ordered a 12 lb flywheel and a sport clutch. The stock clutch is pretty soft and the dual-mass flywheel doesn't let the engine spin as well as it would if it had the lightweight flywheel. Are there paper cone filters? I have a cloth/oil one, it's an EVO intake and it's the included cone filter. Tom
  19. Last Saturday, Jan 3rd, my PCA region did a DE event at Sebring. It was a blast! I couldn't believe how much fun it was. I couldn't believe I was driving on the track I've seen so many times on television but have never been to in person. My Boxster's suspension is the standard sport suspension and I have the 17" wheels and tires. I'm still sorting through my engine mods so my car is a few tenths slower than stock in the quarter mile but that didn't hold me back at the track. I passed pretty much everyone in green group and I made it into blue before lunchtime. My instructors liked my smoothness and speed. In fact I've already exceeded the stock brakes even though I have EBC red pads, ATE Super Blue and stainless braided brake lines. I'm going to have to get 18" wheels and upgrade to something larger in the front, maybe Brembo F50. I'll replace the rear discs with cross drilled and the pads with Pagid race pads. My stock front rotors are purple from that day and they had extreme fade going into the hairpin at the end of turn 6 (that long sweeper). Besides the brakes, the rest of the car held up extremely well. After I washed it off and peeled off the numbers, you couldn't even tell the car visited the track, no squeaks or rattles even though I pushed the car beyond its traction and braking ability a few times. Oh yeah, I also like turn 17 at Sebring, it's almost horse shoe shaped and if you hit the line right with enough speed you steer with the throttle, its a blast. 20. Has anyone installed any aftermarket shifter knobs? Does anyone know the diameter of the top of the shifter lever, and how to remove the factory Boxster shifter knob? Tom
  21. If you're going to unplug the battery don't close your front hood while you are waiting, you won't be able to open your front hood again unless you put a positive battery to the little retractable terminal and the negative on a part of the chassis, the door latch thing is a good place.
  22. On December 2nd 2003 my '02 Boxster 2.7 was bone stock and it had about 5000 miles on it and I wanted to get a baseline on the dyno (Dyno Dynamics of Australia). After one pull to blow out the carbon or whatever we did a 2nd run and it made 181.7 hp at the wheels. The power peak came in at 6400-6500 rpm. I then brought it to Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, FL for a few runs at the drag strip. My first time in long time (15+ years) and I ran a 14.403 @ 97.67 mph with a .724 reaction time and a 2.105 60'. I got creamed by a modified Mustang SVO with the factory supercharger. He ran a 12 flat. (Right 1st 2.4058, I was in the left lane). I was having a good time even though the supercharged SVT walked all over me. Run #2 was against a late 80s Mustang LX 5.0 with a custom blue and silver paint job with the paint colors fading into each other. I screwed up my launch bad and ran a 14.761 @ 96.57 mph with a 1.143 reaction time and a 2.359 60' time, but it was enough to beat the Mustang LX 5.0! The third run was against a brand new Audi RS6 with that 450 hp twin turbo V8. He was overheating or running poorly or something. I ran a 14.326 @ 96.99 mph with a .675 r/t, an a 1.855 60'. Strangely I beat the RS6! I saw his car being serviced at my dealer not long after that. I then caught the horsepower bug and set off to try to find some more, heh. I added an EVO sport intake kit, the one with the cone filter, a Superchip 93 octane chip and a Dansk sport muffler that Performance Products has on sale for $760. To make a long story short, it turned out the old 124 version MAF didn't like the extra airflow and gave poor readings (said there was more air going through than there was) and my car was really running rich. You could see it on the dyno and the dragstrip. On the dyno I was running about 8 horsepower less than stock with the most losses in the midrange. The mixture was way off, stock I was running 12.8-13.0 on the mixture, pretty much a straight line across the whole rev range. After the mods but with a bad MAF I was running around 11.6-12.0 which is way too rich. With the mods and the bad MAF (but before replacing the MAF) I ran against various Hondas and Acuras. It only took me one run to get a little frustrated. I ran a 16.300 @ 93.99 with a .665 r/t and a 3.027 60'. The second run was a 15.001 @ 94.47 mph with a .715 r/t and a 2.313 60', and the third run was a 16.184 @ 93.20 mph with a .778 r/t and a 2.650 60'. After that, and a few more runs with the same performance numbers I brought my 986 to my dealer and showed him the dyno pulls with the shootout printout (before and after) and the dragstrip time slips. I reasoned that the MAF was bad because its the main component that tells the ECU how much air the car is able to suck in, the numbers and charts were obvious that my car was running really rich. The dealer put the car on their diagnostic equipment and saw my car was running really rich as well and proceeded to replace the MAF with the updated 125 version and change the P-Code in my ECU to let it know that a 125 version will be giving it the readings. The car feels a lot stronger now with the new MAF. I'm going to Sebring on Saturday and I won't be able to get back to the drag strip until next week. I know I'll have a blast at Sebring, it's my first DE event! I'll post more drag strip time slips after I come back from the strip. I'll post my lap times from Sebring too. Happy New Year! And, I hope you guys are having as much fun with your Boxsters as I am with mine. Tom PCA Member since 2003 :jump:
  23. It still looks better than the Z4, heh.
