  2. Hi Folks! I have a 2001 Boxster S, and I want to take off the front plate mounting blocks so I can fix the bumber and get some plugs instead. I tried unscrewing the blocks via the holes in the centers, but they seem to just spin. Short of forcing them out (and risk deforming the bumber), is there a cleaner way to get them out? Thanks!   3. Hi Mike Thanks for the description. It appears that I had a brainfart, and was expecting the amber parking lights in the front. The signals do work- I guess I was looking for something that wasn't there! Better than seeing things that aren't there, I suppose... that decides it- this week, I stop huffing glue!   4. Thanks Tool Pants! (Love the name) I'm pretty sure it's just the front parking lights that don't ignite- the turn indicator lamps appear to have an unimpeded electron flow. I'm fairly certain (I'll check after work) that the rear marker lights do work. Keep the shiny side up!

  6. Hi Friends The front marker lights on my 2001 Box S won't come on, but the hazards/turn signals do work. I got a fuse diagram from Mike Focke's site, but I don't see "marker lights" or "parking lights" listed on it. Can anyone help me figure out how to get these lights working again? I find it dubious that it's the lamps themselves, as both seemed to have died at the same time- that's why I thought "fuse". There was no fuse diagram in the little compartment, but Mike's chart is supposedly for an '01 "S" like mine... Please advise. Thanks and have a great weekend! Fudgie
  7. Howdy All The covertible top on my '01 Bosxter S wouldn't close all the way under its own power, so I took it to the local dealership. Surprise, surprise- it needs a pair of transmissions for the roof mechanism ($1200 per plus $800 labor- $3200 total). Can anyone recommend an independent mechanic in the eastern PA area (Chester/Lancaster/Berks/Delaware counties)? I want a second opinion. Thanks in advance, Fudgie
  8. Fudgie: If the plastic has only become unstitched, as opposed to a tear or crack at that point, it's a relatively simple repair. You can take the car to a boat canvas place and they can sew a few stitches back in, apply some seam sealer, and it will be as good as it was before the stitches came undone. If you want to DIY, it should take 15 to 20 minutes with a hand awl/stitcher. They are available at boat supply and in camping supply stores and you can then just stitch the plastic window back in exactly through the same holes as were originally made by the factory stitching, both in the
  9. Howdy All! The window in the top of my 2001 Boxster S is coming unstitched where it folds (around the middle of the window). So far, there are only 1-2" gaps where it has pulled away from the roof material on each side. Short of roof replacement, what are my options? Is the replacement glass window really a lot smaller than the original plastic one? Would it require an entirely new roof, or are there retrofit options? Can the existing plastic window be re-stitched and stay water-tight? Does anyone know of any shops in the Philadelphia area that can fix this for me? Lu
  10. I second that emotion... I have been corresponding with Jake via email, and it's starting to look like the best value for the money might be a custom-build like his. I suffered IMS failure and am reaaallly nervous about putting another stock Porsche motor in my '01 S. I want the car to perform at its best, and financially, I need the car to last longer than the two months I got out of it before the 60k engine stroked out. Jake's motor appears to provide more horses and reliability for not too much more dough than your dealer would soak you for a Porsche remanufactured turd. Check out my thread

  12. We're talking 986s, though- they're not exclusive cars anymore, they're squarely in the price range of anyone with more than a fast food job. You can buy a 99 or 00 for less than it costs for a dealer engine replacement, and that's pretty damned devastating to most Boxster owners. It's equivalent to a $15k repair on a Toyota Yaris. I'd hope anyone buying a Porsche does so with the understanding that parts are 3x more expensive than for a mainstream car and a trip to the dealer's repair bay is going to set you back $1000 before they even turn the car off, but the engine failures that do occu
  13. Hey you guys, it's getting too difficult to respond to each of you individually (I'm polite, but lazy). Suffice it to say that I have been floored by the level of knowledge and depth of sympathy you folks demonstrate in your posts. You all have my sincere thanks. Here are some more details- I was stopped at a traffic light (one on every corner in Delaware County, PA) after 10 minutes of normal suburban driving. I do realize that I could probably get another S with similar mileage to the one I bought (57,245 when I got it two months ago) for what the replacement engine would cost, but I worry that I might end up with two beautiful cars and no good motors... at least with the Porsche-rebuilt hamster wheel I get a two-year unlimited warranty. I just don't know yet if the RMS (I assume that's for "rear main seal") and IMS issues have been addressed on the replacement engines. I'm waiting for a reply from Jake Raby or his people to see what options they suggest.

  19. Hi Guys Well, the worst case happened- I stalled, and when I re-started the car (2001 Boxster S) my engine sounded like there were loose rocks tumbling around in it. At that very moment a flatbed tow truck pulled up next to me, so I hired him to take my baby to Don Rosen here in eastern PA. The verdict- intermediate shaft failure. I was informed that there was oil present in the engine box, and that the oil was infused with metal particles. The remedy- a new engine! The quote I got from the dealer works out to be around 17k with tax. My plan is to park the car for about a year while I

  22. Hello again! I hope everyone is well. Today's question involves the intake vents on the side of my '01 Boxster S. The vent on the driver's side is mounted firmly, seeems entirely rigid and is offset (raised) slightly from the surrounding body panel. The vent on the passenger'e side of the car moves in and out, with some friction-feel, by merely pressing on it (pops in, and when released, pops back out a bit). It can't easily be pulled free of the vehicle (I didn't want to pull to hard and break something), so I'm not concerned about it falling out while driving, but I want it to be seated
