  1. The Ignition Switch replacement is an easy, if a bit fiddly, DIY job - worst bit I found was locating then loosening the tiny screws, easy enough apart from that.
  2. Many thanks ericinboca, doesn't sound too difficult. It's a nice part of the world you live in, by the way!
  3. My rear anti roll bar snapped yesterday and I've ordered a replacement from Porsche. Does anyone know if I could install this myself? Any guidelines for doing so? here's a pic of the damage: Looks like I'll need to replace the bushes too.
  4. Thanks guys, as we're going to be stripping the brakes down we'll check this out. I'm hoping it's not suspension but we'll see when we get the car raised.
  5. Hi all. My friend's 2.5 986 has developed a clunk which seems to come from the driver's side brake. You feel it through the pedals and steering wheel when going over bumps. Having briefly spoken to a local indie garage on the phone, they reckon it's a duff anti-rattle caliper plate (?). This has been diagnosed without anyone actually looking at the brakes, but we are thinking of overhauling the brakes ourselves anyway with new discs and pads all round. Does anyone know of this part? Is it available on it's own or is it part of the brake repair kit in the Porsche parts list? Sorry to be so vague! Cheers.
  6. Oops, forgot to mention new brake discs and pads all round.. still a big hit to the wallet in one go though. Rsfeller, the starter was sticking intermittently on startup, producing that embarrassing 'screech' that many have reported before. The starter motor was removed, stripped down and cleaned. The problem will probably return in the future as the shaft / bearings get dirty over time which causes the sticking.
  7. Finally got my 986 back after 3 days in my local German marque 'specialist', lots needing done as I suspected: Rattly noise from engine was loose and missing exhaust clamps Starter motor bendix full of gunk and sticking Complete ignition switch / barrel assembly replaced Passenger front side lower track control arm replaced Major service carried out Other minor bits n pieces The bill.. £1900.00 Warranty company would not cover anything as 'faults must have been there before policy was started'... so are sacked, I'll just put the money I was paying them aside every month instead. Now, here's to many months ahead of trouble-free Boxster fun!
  8. Thanks Jake, sound advice. I've booked the car in to a specialist tomorrow, I'll let you know how I get on.
  9. Ok, I stalled the car today and when I restarted it, there was a really sick-sounding rattle from the engine and the revs were up and down erratically. I left the car running for a bit, the revs settled down as did the rattle after a few seconds, but it's still there. It's a light metalllic noise, like something is loose in the engine bay. I maybe shouldn't have, but I took the car out for a test and the rattle is not audible under normal driving, just at idle. Any ideas? It's another thing to add to my recent problems list - I have the screech on startup, faulty ignition (you have to turn the key back a notch slightly for the electrics to work) and knocking / creaking from the front end at low speeds. Thank god I took out a new warranty recently!
  10. I think if you intend to own any Porsche, you have to be 100% prepared to spend a fair amount of money in keeping the car as original as possible and therefore keep its resale value up. It's a Porsche, you don't want to put anything cheap and nasty near it! Fair enough if it was a Honda or a Toyota or something like that, and I don't want to come across as a snob, but personally I have a rule that if it's a cheap knock-off part, it ain't going near my car. Being a Porsche owner is a labour of love and can occasionaly hurt your bank balance, but its worth it :-)
  11. In my experience, cold air filters are a waste of money, you won't get any performance gain, in fact you may lose some low end torque. You're better off with the stock intake.
