  1. I see to have the same problem in a '00 C2 Tip. Any experience out there with having the real axle seal replaced? DIY or cost? Thanks.
  2. Have 2000 Tip (71k). Could use some help identifying a small oil leak. I do not have jack stands (would make it easier, I know) and haven't brought it in yet to have it lifted. But recently noticed small amounts of oil on garage floor slightly forward from engine (even with middle of rear wheels) and slightly off center towards drivers side. Also, if it is the RMS, any Tip-specific advice re: having it fixed immediately or implications of waiting? Thx for your help and advice.
  3. Thanks for the tip - used it to hook up my Escort this weekend. Very clean install.
  4. Thought I would share my experience since first posting this question. I read a post about the "proper" way to start a 996 - wait until the timer (at the oil gauge) has completely run down (5 or 6 seconds or so) before starting. Since reading that post, I have been waiting for the timer to run down before cranking the ignition and I haven't had one instance of the starter grinding (as I described above). Not sure what it all means but not having the grinding sound is, I think, a good thing!
  5. I think if you unlock the doors with the remote but do not open the doors, after 20 seconds or so, the doors will re-lock without the alarm being activated
  6. Could it be the ignition switch? I might want to try changing the switch before investing in a starter.
  7. thx - may take you up on it. Want to have my tech look at it first to make sure it's the starter and not the ignition switch, etc. Appreciate all the insight.
  8. Ugh!!! Has only been happening for a week or so (and as I said, not in every instance - usually when cold).
  9. Is this the type of thing that will eventually cause the starter to go (so wait to fix it until then) or fix now because further damage may be done?
  10. sorry - somehow posted to the 997 blog (instead of 996). I will repost in the correct spot - of course, any views would be appreciated.
  11. Hello all - Have a 2000 C2 Cab; starts fine but very recently, when starting cold, after the engine roars to life, the starter doesn't seem to release resulting in an ear-piercing grinding sound (same sound that would result from turning key to start position when the engine is already on). Seems to occur less when starting a warm engine. Anyone have thoughts on this or experience with a similar problem? Something that can be done? Thanks!!!
  12. Thanks - in the interim, I found an old post discussing the reason for only one fog light. Strange but I guess it makes sense. Thanks again.
  13. Just looking for some tips on where to start. Passenger side rear fog light not working (confirmed not the bulb; driver side works fine). Wires seem fine (not loose, set.). All other rear lights on passenger side work fine as well. Anyone have experience with problems with the rear fogs? Any tips? Thx.
  14. Just purchased a 2000 996 C2 Cab - previous owner had only one key. Anyone know how much dealers charge for a replacement key? Is there any way to get a replacement key besides going through a dealer. Thanks for your help.
