  1. I thought I'd share this. I just flushed the brakes and clutch on my 2003 Boxster S. Glad I did, it was pretty cloudy and had some debris. I installed some Speed Bleeder valves on the brakes. Those things are awesome. They are one way valves so you just open them up and pump the brakes. Makes it very easy. I didn't install them on the clutch. It's too hard to reach.
  2. Thanks RFM for taking the time to respond. Where would the dust bellows be? Steering rack?
  3. I opened up the front, and I don't see any leaks around the pump. Everything looks good. I haven't seen any leaks on the garage floor. hummmmm. It must be going somewhere. The tank is almost dry. if the wrong fluid is in it, would it expand more and blow it out of the overflow to the point that the tank would virtually be dry when cold? I see a little residue around the cap, but that could be from someone filling it.
  4. I just purchased a 2003 Boxster S. I was just checking the power steering fluid level and it was low. It wasn't showing on the stick. I dipped in further with plastic rod to see how low and noticed that the fluid on the stick was clear when I wiped it on a paper towel. I thought that the CHF 11S fluid was green. Is that the case? if so, I hope that the previous owner didn't fill it with another fluid. I guess tomorrow, I'll open the front engine access and see if there are leaks from the pump. From what I understand other fluids eat the seals. Any comments or input would be appreciated.
  5. I have Akebono pads on my 2002 S and they are far less dusty than OEM or other aftermarket I have used. How do they feel compared to OEM?
  6. I'll be doing my fronts this weekend. Pads and sensors.
  7. Here is a photo of the exhaust for anyone interested. There is another hole about 2 inches from that one. You cant see it in the photo. I will probably add a third. I don't want it to sound like a Honda for goodness sakes. ha.
  8. I just did that exhaust mod on my 2000 Boxster, but I punched out 3 3/4 inch holes on each side. It sounds perfect and not to loud. I noticed when I put bigger holes in the exhaust, it sounded less "airy" and more natural. Do the larger holes make it louder or do they just change the tone?
  9. I recently purchased a 2003 Boxster S. Yesterday, I opened the engine compartment for the first time to check out my air filter. When I pulled out the air filter, I realized it had NEVER been changed. The foam had dry rotted and was clogging up over half of the filter. I didn't have a replacement, so I removed all of the bad foam, blew it all out with an air compressor and reinstalled until the new K&N gets here. From there, I desnorkled it. I then did the exhaust mod where you drill 2 1/2" holes in the inner part of each the exhaust pipes before they exit the muffler. Wooooohooooooo this thing sounds awesome. Quiet when cruising and mean as h___ when you punch it. I love it. I'll attach an mp3 for those interested I had an iPhone in my lap to record it. car.mp3
  10. I need to replace the front brake pads on my 2003 Boxster S. I am considering Akebono ceramic pads. Porsche pads seem really dusty. Has anyone have input regarding Akebono pads? If I switch to another brand and type on the front, should I change the rears as well?
  11. Thanks. Ever since I've tried recording it, the thing sounds wonderful. Right now, all I have are recordings of a perfect Boxter start up. Imagine that. Maybe I should just permanently attach the iPhone under the car. Ha.
  12. its really odd, ive tried some of the stuff I have around the house to clean it, windex, soapy water etc... But I cant even feel the residue on the gauge. Although it looks like drips and spatter its completely smooth??!! I just bought a 2003 boxster S a few weeks ago. The gauges were cloudy with fine scratches like someone had cleaned them with an abrasive. I suspect It had the spots like yours that they tried to get out. I actually tried some CD polish. The kind you get at electronic stores to polish scratches out of CDs and DVDs. It is basically glass polish. It cleared mine up perfectly. They look new. If you try it, try it on a VERY tiny area first.
  13. I recently bought a 2003 Boxster S with 42,000 miles. It had a rebuilt engine installed under warranty in 2007 at 26,500 miles. Good for me. Can someone give me an idea of what all they replace in a rebuilt engine. Do they replace thermostats, water pumps, starters and things like that or is it mainly just internal components like valves and bearings. What about lifters? Thx,
  14. One other thing that I should mention is that the car currently has 42,600 miles, and it had the engine replaced with a rebuilt engine by Porsche under warranty in 2007 at about 26,500 miles, so this engine only has about 16,000 miles on it. I don't know what all they replace in rebuilt engines. Well.. I had my recorder ready this morning to record it. It started with no odd sound. If it were leaking down, it should have made the sound today. I didn't start it yesterday. I wonder if it could be a starter issue? Hmmmmmmm(scratching my head).
  15. It looks like we almost have the same car. Is that a Speed Yellow Boxster S? I just purchased a 2003 Speed Yellow Boxster S with 42,000 miles a few weeks ago. I thought I was special. ha.

  17. Thanks for taking the time to respond. It's pretty loud and sharp and it taps with the rhythm of the engine as it increases on initial fire up and then slows into idle, like a lifter would, but It's louder than the typical lifter tap that I have heard on some cars. It almost sounds like the exhaust is tapping against something. At least that is the type of sound. It's a pretty sharp sound. Not really a muffled tapping. But if it were the exhaust, it should be consistent and not after the car has sat for a day or two. I've never heard a timing chain rattle in a Porsche, so I don't know how muffled it is. Maybe I can try to use my iPhone to record the sound the next time it happens. Thanks again for your input.
  18. I have a 2003 Boxster S that sometimes has a loud metallic rattle that seems to come from the driver side of the engine and lasts for about a 1.5 secs. It only happens sometimes when the car hasn't been cranked for about 24 hrs or more. Other than this, the engine sounds and runs perfectly. One other note, I noticed this after changing the oil with 0w40. I've only had the car a couple of weeks, so I'm not sure what oil was in it before. I'm not sure what changing the oil would have to do with it if anything. I was reading where someone else had a similar issue, and someone said it sounded like the chain tensioner is leaking down. That didn't turn out to be their issue, but I thought it could be mine. If this could be it, how can I know/test? And would that mean it needs a new tensioner, or just pads? Any input would be appreciated.
  19. Yep. you can see it from under the dash. It's literally the last part on the end. You can watch it twitch. It's just VERY close to the side of the car, so it looks like you would have to pull the whole unit to get to it, but the mechanic acted as though it was easier than that. I'm kinda like you in the sense that unplugging it would just bother me. I'm a bit of a fanatic and would like everything to be perfect. Besides it looks pretty inexpensive. If I pull it out, I'll take some photos to document it for everyone. He said it was pretty common.
  20. I have a 2003 Boxster S (Love it) :) There is a rattle sound coming from the passenger dash. Upon investigation I found that it is a solenoid that is the last part attached to the AC system toward the side of the car that seems to be spazing out. The dealer said it was the fresh air vent solenoid that was going out. You can see it twitching under the dash. Has anyone replaced it. it is really close to the side of the car. not much room. What do I need to do to replace this. The mechanic said it was pretty easy, but there really isn't much room to get to it. Any instructions or advice would be appreciated.
