It seems it was the ground strap. I took it off and checked it for breaks, and for continuity with a resistence meter. Then cleaned the posts and reintalled it. Starter motor works fine now. Thanks to Loren and everyone else for your suggestions. Just wish I had thought of the ground strap before I bought the new starter. Now have a couple of extras. Going on Ebay soon unless someone here needs one. I will make them a great deal.
Hi - I am having an intermittent starting problem. Car turns over and then dies. Second or third try car starts fine - this happens maybe once a week.
What is the ground strap? Where is it and how would I clean it...
Thanks

I read this story out to my own family today. Thank you for this.
You will own another 911 someday. Karma will smile on you :)

Remove the front trim in the trunk and adjust the lock by loosen the two bolts one winding and than refasten. Take care to do this mm. by mm., if you adjust too deep or out of the middle, the hood (catcher) can stuck in the lock !!!!
Ok somehow I don't think I can do this as a DIY :-) I will go to my fav autobody guy this wknd
-
Lower the trunk lock a little if the bumper is adjusted as it should, it could help, the hood should be closed by the pressure of one hand, on a spot between the crest and the bumper (definitely NOT on the crest!!)
Newbie here - how do I lower the trunk lock?
Thanks
-
If you think it's coming for the front hood gap then just tape the area and test drive. Be sure to tape that won't damage the paint work, you should be able to find autobody tape at your local auto parts store.
Yes it's the hood gap...
now what can I do? I've adjusted the knobs clockwise as far as they'll go....

quick update.
ran the car to 75mph with top down today. (beautiful fall day today)
It whistles.....
I can't lower the hood below the bumper line anymore than it already is :-(

Thank you all very much for your inputs and thank you for the offer to zero win911 but a ride from Bama to LA and back would be kinda longish just to clear this code...on second thought it may be a good enough reason to take a cross counry drive in a most enjoyable vehicle ;)
Have not repaired yet, simply have not had the time to take it in to the dealer but I will. It'll probably end up being the driver's side seat belt buckle.

These noises are often very difficult to track down. I start by checking all the seals of any type of damage and then wiping them down with silicone spray. The silicone will take a few days to swell the seals but I have had good success with it.
With the top up and at speed, if you open a window slightly does the noise stop??
Well i tried that - hard to hear the whistle with the window slightly open at speed - hard to tell if it disappeared or drowned out by the other noise.
I will try leveling bumper with hood...but like I said my little bumpers under the hood is turned all the way clockwise on the drivers side already... and thats where it's sticking up a little

So coming from BMW and Mercedes, I have to say the Porsche initially feels more 'nervous' at very high speeds because of the shorter wheel base and the very sensitive suspension and steering.
As I drive it more I realize it is really just a more involved driving experience - and can carve the road more accurately at high speeds.
It is not a cruiser - but it makes it much more fun to drive.
Maybe you're just not used to it yet?
In any case you should definitely get the alignment checked.

do they make a map database for Venezuela?

Good topic. I have the airbag light right now as well (as well as a CEL that I need to diagnose), just ordered the Durametric.
You'll love it. I'm a closet geek - so I love this thing.
Check out my post here

Hi - what can someone do with VIN?
Well it is the better safe than sorry:
1. I could do a complete vehicle history on your car,
2. I could use that VIN on documents,
3. It could be used by car thiefs...
just too much information available...
ok fixed :-)

Looks good!
No over revs...
But looks babied - very few redlines....
BUT I have a question
why is there a difference between ignition ranges and operating hours? 1502 h vs 1583 h ?
Ignition range (1 in this case) is the last time an over rev was recorded...so essentially the last redline incursion occurred 81 hours into operation.
Oh and I would erase/cover the VIN for security reasons...
Hi - what can someone do with VIN?

Check Rahlstrom DIY post below. He upgraded a double din aftermarket unit to his MOST system.
I did an upgrade too

As mentioned before I had an airbag failure warning light last week.
I took the advice of Loren and others and ordered a Durametric kit.
I bought the enthusiast kit and it arrived in 2 business days!!!! Awesome.
I plugged it into the car and it showed the exact fault: CODE 46 - Seat Buckle.
I cleared the code and went to town with an electrical contact cleaner.
I am hoping this will solve it temporarily for now.
I SAVED $275 that the dealer was going to charge me today!
So it paid for itself instantly AND I could sleep soundly knowing I didn't have something more serious...
I played with other settings. It is awesome.
Highly recommended!

I installed a double din AVIC unit couple of weeks ago.
My car is a Mk2 C4 996 PRE-MOST w/Bose.
I bought the double din installation kit from Eurospeed Motors http://stores.ebay.com/Euromotorspeed
IT WORKED PERFECTLY.
Wiring = 10 mins
Trim removal = 30 mins
AC control module re routing = 30 mins
Microphone wiring = 5 mins
Nav antenna install = 15 mins
Installing cage, setter etc = 10 mins
Installing unit = 10 mins
Putting everything back = 30 mins
Putting on beautiful trim plate that came with this kit = 5 mins
I made 3 phone calls and exchanged 3 emails with Troi - who I believe is the owner of Eurospeedmotors
UNBELIEVABLY helpful. Excellent support.
My wife couldn't believe the look and finish.
Also btw, I have confirmed (as others have as well) the stock headunit from Becker is horrible.
Using all stock bose amp and speakers with my new headunit, everything has 'woken up'.
ONE note: if you have 02 996 w/ factory cupholder, ditch the heat shield that comes with the kit. It won't fit. The cupholder is on a metal frame and performs the role of the heatshield.
All in all, it seemed a little initimidating to do this at first, but I got it done myself with some help from Troi!
if you are a little nervous, and not experienced with taking things apart, my advice is to buy this kit and go to a stereo store and tell them to install it for you...
Good luck!

good question. I will try that and report back...
Such a newb with these issues. I came from driving just MB's and BMW's the last 20 yrs and they're sealed like bank vaults at ridiculous speeds...

I might try the window adjustment on this thread too

Maurice. Thank you very much for you detailed tips and help. Have a great weekend, and I'll try to remember I'm having fun this weekend when I'm busting up my knuckles:).
Reprising an old thread, but did this help alleviate wind noise?
If so, what adjustments were made?
Thanks

turn up the music or get an aftermarket exhaust...it is difficult to track down noises...do you get the noise with the top down?
Impossible to tell w/top down because it is apparent only at speeds above 70mph or so....and at that speed with the top down, all those noises are mixed up.
Can someone tell me how the hood should line up? Mine sticks up slightly above the bumper line - an exaggerated picture is below.
I tried to lower the bumper by turning the knobs clockwise but the drivers side is all the way clockwise but still sticks up a bit...

Christian,
Thanks for this - but can you detail the instructions a little bit more?
Thanks
