  1. Assuming the engine is still good in that one, find a different 996 with an intermediate shaft failure, scoop it up for cheap and swap that engine in...ta da! Nice 996 for cheap.
  2. I had 19s on a previous car and while they looked good they made the car frustratingly slow and boggy feeling. I can only imagine 20s... If you value your car's acceleration at all you'll hate having anything more than 18" wheels on it.
  3. LOL I just installed a set and noticed that the power steering/AC/whatever it is line pushes up right against them...time for some zip ties!
  4. It's not really a do at home thing...you'd normally send these out...thing is I used to be the guy that people would send their stuff out to so I had the equipment laying around to do it myself ;)
  5. I asked Loren about it, looks like I might set something up in the "special offers" section at some point :)
  6. So the Brembos on my '01 Boxster S were completely shot finish wise...each caliper was faded, had pretty much no gloss (most of the clear had peeled off leaving a beat looking flat red) and had copious amounts of dirt to complement the terrible looking finish. I used to powdercoat stuff for people on the side a while ago so I decided why not break out my equipment again and take a crack at refinishing these myself. I'd refinished several sets of VW calipers before but never done a set of big brakes. I apologize in advance for the mix of digital camera/cellphone pictures. I used whichever one happened to be handy while I was working  First, this is what I started with...this doesn't show how bad a condition the finish is in very well...if you look at the one in the back and how the face of it is completely dull and unshiny, that's a pretty good indication of what most of them looked like: So I dropped them off at the local sandblaster to blast the old finish off. I left the pistons/dust boots in to protect the bores from blasting. Blaster doesn't hurt the pistons/boots, but it would make the caliper unusable if it got to the bores. Got them back, rinsed off the sand: Now the fun part! Time to start disassembling them. Disassembly is a tricky little game. You first have to push the pistons out a little with a compressor, then carefully use two screw drivers to pry out the piston...and do that four times for each caliper. Then you have to reach into the bore with a teeny tiny screwdriver and carefully pry the rubber seal out without scratching the bore. Here's one done: After a while, all four are done: I didn't bother taking pictures of the rest of the masking/prep process, but you have to make sure to mask off the bores/bleeders/holes for the lines etc to make sure no powder gets in. So I threw them in the oven for a prebake to burn off any remaining grease/dirt, pulled them out, powdercoated them, back in the oven, pulled them out, let em cool off and voila: Fresh out the oven, haven't bothered taking the masking tape etc off completely yet as you can see. Next comes a lot of masking tape removal (not fun, the tape becomes extremely brittle after being heated), then some Porsche decals and reassembling the pads etc back in...then you have the finished product :) (the droplets are rain, not surface defects ;) ) Now back on the car: When I finish the other stuff I'm working on I'll take some pics of the car on the ground with them and the wheels on etc. Cheers
  7. IIRC that bolt is rather hard to reach, using an extractor on it ought to be interesting...
  8. Yup it's a triple square...I know exactly which bolt you're talking about. I'd take a triple square bit and try to hammer it in then turn it. That's how I removed a stripped pressure plate bolt.
  9. EDIT: Screw it, I'm just gonna buy the OEM ones off PartsGeek....rather not risk wasting more money on ones that don't fit. For the heck of it, quick mock up of the tips I bought:
  10. Hi all, in the middle of removing the muffler, but I'm confused about what to do with the top bracket. I have the Bentley manual, and all it says is to undo the two nuts, which makes sense, as once you undo the other bolts that hold it to the muffler the bracket seems to just be clamping the muffler in place. I did that, however the exhaust still seems like it's held up by something despite having already unbolted everything else. I can't tell if maybe that bracket is still leaning against the muffler and causing it to therefore be stuck or what. So what should I do? Does the muffler generally plop out of its spot once everything's loosened or does it take considerable force? Or do I need to do something more with the bracket? Pleas ignore the red marks from the image I borrowed, I'm talking about the stuff in the blue box. Thanks :)
  11. Thank you both! The parts guy at the local Porsche dealer couldn't figure it out... I repped you Loren (after hitting the friend key by mistake lol) but I don't see a + below your post kbrands?
  12. Hey guys, my car came missing the microphone cover to the left of the gauges in the gauge cluster. It's a 2001 Boxster S. You can see the piece I'm talking about in this pic (not my car, just for illustration) Does anybody know the part number, if it's even sold separately? Thanks!
  13. I'd like to know as well, I have yet to drive a stock car that handles better than my 986.
  14. Fortunately I haven't had time to touch the car so I can still check the relay. Thanks for the input :) Would a lack of the relay cause the intermittent setting to not function? Also, is there anything else the cruise control issue could be apart from the stalk? The cruise control won't turn on i.e. the green light on the dash won't light up, nothing.
  15. Hi, I've recently acquired an '01 Boxster S, been chasing down the little quirky problems it has. One issue I've noticed is the wipers do not return to the bottom of the windshield when they are turned off. For instance, if I turn the wipers on to normal speed and then push the stalk back down to the "off" position, they'll stop in place right where they are in the middle of the windshield instead of returning to the bottom like every single car I've ever driven. This is abnormal, correct? I highly suspect the control stalk unit is faulty, since my cruise control will not turn on and the intermittent wiper function does not work at all on my car (it does have intermittent wipers; it has the knob for them, just when you put the stalk in the position the wipers don't go anywhere). Before I order a new ($200) control stalk unit though, I'd like some input as to whether this is the real problem. Thanks!
