  1. Hi, I have replaced all coils (& plugs), and am still having the "skaking" problem. My "mechanic" buddy says he thinks my problem is an intake gasket, as there's a hiss coming from the left side. I'm wondering if it could be the purge control valve, as mentioned before. Could you please tell me the location of this valve? I'd like to check it. I'm eager to get his thing running properly! Thank you again for all the help and follow-up!
  2. RFM, Hi, and thanks so much for all your help and contributions to this great site. I am following your advice and preparing to change all the coils (in my 04 Cayenne S). One question, though, is there anything to be careful of or concerns when disconnecting the stabilizer bar on the passenger side, or is it just disconnect and reconnect when completed? Didn't want to lose engine alignment or anything. Thanks!
  3. Thank you! Would that be on the passenger side then (U.S.)? Also, I saw in the DIY section that the airpump needs to be removed for access. Could you expain? I don't know which piece that is. Apologies for my ignorance...Thanks again!
  4. Does anyone know the cylinder firing order of a Cayenne S? Actually what I'm trying to locate is cylinder 5. Need to replace the coil (see my other post..) on that one. Thank you!!!
  5. Okay, I switched the maf's, and now I've gotten the code P0305 twice (cylinder 5 misfire?), and still getting the "shake"/vibration. Any ideas as to what this could be indicative of? Could that still indicate maf issue, or something else? I sure do appreciate all the help and input!!!
  6. Also, anyone have any suggestions for an economical outlet for mafs?????
  7. Thanks for all the input! I located the mafs (not as hard as the mid/rear engines!), and was able to unplug the connector, but haven't yet been able to remove/swap them (don't have a tool for the star bit with the center piece). Anyway, I discovered that the left bank only seems to have four connector pins, and the right has five. Is that correct? It appears that there are only four wires leading to the left side connector and five on the right. I thought maybe that's how the system differentiates the sides. If so, does it work to swap sensors for the test? Also, after unplugging the connectors and plugging them back in, I erased the codes and fired the engine. after a minute of running, the cel came back. This time, 3 codes: P0300, 304 & 305. Cylinder mis-fire codes. Are these also consistent with this diagnosis? Tomorrow I find a way to tap those screws and remove the sensors. Thank you again for all your support!
  8. Thanks, that crossed my mind. Could you tell me where those (mafs)are on this vehicle? Also, something I read (someone w/a similar problem) indicated that it could be a fuel filter. Does that seem possible with this code? Thanks for the help & follow-up!!!
  9. Hi, I recently purchased an '04 Cayenne S for winter/family uses (trying to extend my Porsche season!). The vehicle has 71K miles on it, and very recently it started to idle roughly. It seems to be ok at speed. Anyway, today the CE light came on, and my generic OBDII gave me a reading of P2189: Too lean at idle speed, bank 2. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what could be causing this? Is it O2 or airmass meter? If so is that a DIY type job on these? Help, I'm new to front engines :)
  10. I'll try the cleaner, but I think I'll just shop for an Alpine (or another stock unit on ebay), if those are the only options. I don't want to invest too much in it, and would prefer to keep it stock, as it's just an interim driver until the new 911 comes along! Thank you for the quick response!!!
  11. Hi, I have a '99 Boxster, and while riding down the road the other day listening to a cd, the player just quit, and the readout just says "error". I tried changing cds, etc. but just continue to get the same error message. The radio operates properly, just no cd. It is the the stock Becker single cd unit (cdr 220?). Any ideas on a problem/solution? Considered disconnecting the battery, then starting over and entering codes, etc. but thought perhaps someone else had encountered this prob. Thanks!!!
  12. Hi again all. I was wondering, since my closest dealer is over an hour away, can they, by chance, determine locking lug pattern by VIN? Thought perhaps I could order and save a trip. Or is there a way to remove them without the "key" and just replace with regular lugs? I may change wheels, and theft isn't a large concern (car doesn't get out much). Thanks as always for all the wondeful help & advice!!!
  13. Thanks for the quick response, I hope your right! I would've been quicker to the same thinking, except that I did, a day after the wash, take it around the block to dry off the brake discs, etc. It ran fine then, but perhaps some water settled in after that??? Suprised it didn't freeze...I can't wait for spring!
  14. Hello, I recently purchased a '99 996 with 86000 miles (car is in immpeccable condition). I don't drive the car much this time of year, but decided to on this nice but crisp (22 Degree) morning. I also drove it last week with no problems, and then washed it in the garage. Anyway, this morning, as I went to start the car, it fired right up, but immediately stalled. This happened numerous times, until I gave up. I came home @ lunchtime to try it, but had the same result. I found though, that once started, if I engaged the throttle enough to keep it running, and held it, it would run until i let off. I decided to try to back out. Once I did, it stalled as soon as I put the clutch in. So I put it in 1st and started it again. Once I started, I decided to go, and went around the block without stopping or using the clutch. After this everything seemed fine. I drove it back to work, let it sit for 3 hours, and no problems. It's running fine, and the idle seems fine (around 800) and not erratic. Just really curious what this could be. Fuel filter? Carbon build up? Could water have settled somewhere after the wash? More importantly, if this problem is likely to continue or worsen. Many thanks for any info or advice you may have! Thank you in advance!!! D. Reynolds
  15. Hi, after recently buying a '99 996, I've just discovered that I don't have the socket for the locking nuts on the wheels. I wanted to remove them for cleaning, etc. I tried the one from a friends '01 Boxster S and it didn't fit. Are they year or model specific? Are there a large variety of patterns? Are they available for purchase anywhere? Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated!!!
  16. Thanks! I'm glad, cost-wise anyway, it shouldn't be too bad. Hopefully that's not a tough bulb to find. Now, any guidance on pulling the insrument cluster? Thanks again, I always appreciate the quick & reliable help this site offers!
  17. Hi, I have a 2000 996 C2 (6 speed), w/65K miles on it. Suddenly, the LCD (?) readout for the oil temperature gauge/clock has stopped working. I can see it faintly in some lights. All of the other gauges are still functioning properly. Is there a fix to this problem, or will it require replacement? Thank you, in advance, for any assistance you can provide!
  18. Bryan: hi, are you by chance the person who emailed me a couple of weeks ago on this topic? If so, I owe you a huge apology! I was traveling when I got the email, and it was deleted before I returned home. So, sorry!! Anyway, that problem sounds familiar and similar to some of mine. After changing the mass airflow, my idle did stabalize for a while, but then began wanting to die occasionally upon engaging the clutch. Some one told me (or I read) that there is a strange tie in to the cooling system, and to try turning off the air!?! That did the trick for a while. Now, it's begun happening again occasionally, interestingly, it's happened right after I reset the obd codes for the C.E. light. I don't know if this is coincidence or not!?! So anyway, try some different settings on the heat/cool setting, specifically turning off the Automatic setting, and see what happens. Let me know, as I am curoius too. By the way, did you do your work yourself? I'm getting an oxygen sensor code now. Say's I just need one of the 4. Just wondering what kind of job it is for an idiot like me. I've done one on an old 911, but that's much different. Also, does your car smoke at start up? Mine does, and I wonder if it could all be related. Was told to try a vapor seperator, but don't know. getting tired of putting money in this one! Anyway, sorry fot the delay in response, and I hope this helps! D. Reynolds
  19. Thanks! Could I possibly need a new oxygen sensor too? Where are those located? Also, I just received my fuel filter, it's # 996 110 253 52. Is that the right part number? Thank you guys, so much for all your help with my pesky questions!!! D. Reynolds
  20. Hi, you have been so helpful, I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome, but a couple of additional questions, from a novice: 1. Ordered a fuel filter for my '97 2.5 today, just wondering if there were any tips, instructions or diagrams available to help me install it ! I'm not sure where it's located! 2. Have been told (by PCA website) that perhaps a new vapor seporator would help with the extensive smoking at start-up that I get continually. Was wondering what kind of expense and job that would be to either a.) buy and install or have my mechanic (an non-dealer Porsche specialist) do. Car is going to him next week anyway. Thank you SO much for all of the advice!!! D. Reynolds
  21. Hi, Thanks for the help! Oddly, When I last had the car read (week or so ago), there were numerous error codes (11 I think?). They included the O2 sensor and cylinder mis-fire messages I spoke of in my previous post. He erased them (mistake?). I just went and had them read again today, so I could record them, and there were only two this time: P1124 & P1126, both indicating "Central Fuel Air Metering" as the problem. But those are the only listed faults now. Could the others return with time? What are these indicative of. Finally, with 115K miles, could new plugs help and be in order for me? Thought maybe they'd help the misfire situation, and perhaps the smoking at start-up too. Thanks SO much for your advice!!! D. Reynolds
  22. Hi, I have a '97 2.5 Boxster with 115K miles and I recently (per OBD II diagnosis) replaced my mass air flow sensor. My c.e. light went off for a short time. Now it's back on, and the generic OBD II says, O2 sensor and then goes through every cylinder and indicates mis-fire :( A couple of questions: Does anyone know what could be causing these readings? Or do i suddenly have a bunch of problems? Plugs? Are they fixables for a willing d.i.y'er? If not what will I be getting into at the dealer? I live an hour from the closest dealer, so even getting to them for diagnosis would be troubling! I haven't had the car long, and don't have a lot of money to dump into it (there's suddenly a VERY needy '85 944 in my garage too! - wifes gonna kill me). I do have a local shop that can service, but they don't have Porsche Diagnostics. Confused, frustrated and wondering if I should of stuck to the air cooled ones...Help! PS - While I retrieve the codes from my local auto parts store, another question: It looks like maybe I need plugs and perhaps an oil separator. Are these very complicated jobs on this mid-engined classic? Thanks again!!!
  23. Thanks for all the info guys! I just follwed suit, and replaced the MAF (& air filter), due to erratic idle (mostly of a high/racing nature), and CE light. I got the parts through Partsbin, and they fit like a glove and did the trick...For the most part...Now, my idle is lower, and dives upon coming to a stop with the clutch in. The car has even stalled several times. Any ideas? It's a '97, 2.5 with high miles...Thanks again!
  24. Hi all. I recently wrote in about a few Boxster problems I'm having. Thanks for the reply! I got a reply back from the PCA Boxster tech about my smoking issue. He said to consider adding a vapor separator to help the problem. I hope he's right, but my problem is that I don't know much about that. Where to find one, and where to put it when I do, specifically, and how extensive of a job it is. Any help or input would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
