  1. I have a '99 996 with both sides broken at the rivet point where the spring attaches. The rivet rattling around in the channel but I can't figure out where it was attached and how to reattach something to hold the spring. Ideas? Of course, without this cable functioning, the top is very loose and pulling in as described in this thread. This is likely the same issue that other folks are having.
  2. I have found a rattle issue in the top. Where the cable attaches to the top frame with the spring, the riveted point has broken so the rivet and spring are loose in the channel and rattling around. The top is also loose and pulling up where the elastic piece pulls the top in so that it properly folds. I'm going to post a new item to see if anybody has ideas on how to reattach this spring to the frame and where it attaches.
  3. 1999 996 Cab/Carrera I found that the horn button on the steering wheel is sticky (PO had removed the fuse, of course) - doesn't fully return and causes the horn to go off at random and stay on unless you think to pull it back out. How do you remove the airbag/horn button assembly? Is the horn spring prone to failure? There are two screws on the back of the steering wheel that I was going to try to pull off the horn and investigate. Thoughts anyone?
  4. Loren, Thanks, with my analog amp meter, the needle was pinned at the max with the ignition off - much more than the alarm system/radio memory. This is when I tried the light, since I was wondering if I had a bad amp guage. So, seems that I get the similar result wiht guage or test light result - very odd that the amps would be so high that my automotive amp guage would be maxed out. Yes, assuming these circuits are not bad in some sort of interrelated way, the one fuse at a time would show the differential amp draw that may be hard to detect with the guage, but I never saw the gauge move a bit during the one fuse at a time method. When I hook up my battery charger, it seems to run forever at 4 amps which made me think that I had somewhere on the order of a 4 amp draw constantly. I need to check the range on the amp guage, it doesnt seem to have a hi/lo switch like the volts and rpm modes.
  5. I've been trying to troubleshoot a battery drain. Tonight I finally hooked up a test light between the battery and ground. Then started pulling fuses. After pulling one at a time, nothing turned off the test light. So I figured it must be more than one, so I just pulled them all! What a pain. In the process noticed the one missing from "2 tone horn". Put one in and light got brighter, but that's another project - probalby bad horn "stuck on" or shorting that fuse. Now I've found two fuses that are draining with the ignition off. First is the wipers and second is the fuse next to it for a variety of things including heating system, mirror warmers, etc. (a 25 amp and a 7.5 amp) First, should these circuits even be on when the ignition is off???? I noticed (by accident) that the window washer nozzle was warm earlier this evening and thought that maybe this has a heat coil in it to keep the nozzle from freezing. (it's about 90 degrees farenheit today in Atlanta). With these two fuses out I have a very dim glow on the test light from the sound system (I assume this is the amp/cd changer, etc needing energy to keep memory, code, etc. but this is NOT the radio fuse, that's a separate one). I'm also getting a P0410/P01411 code and was looking for a 40 amp fuse that somebody had mentioned in the forums but can only find a bank of relays above the fuse box (driver footwell). I looked behind the panel behind the rear seats mentioned in one post but no luck. Does this fuse look like a boxy relay? THanks folks for looking at this post and replying with any thoughts. 1999 996 Tiptronic Cabriolet
  6. Yes, I know this seems like a well worn topic but hopefully this will be a twist and I can't seem to to find the info I'm perhaps needing. I have the typical frothy oil in the coolant, but no water in the oil. So, I'm hopeful that I have one of two problems: Bad oil cooler or bad air oil separator It seems from these forums that both of these have water and oil in close proximity and that a failure could cause my symptoms. First, needing thoughts as to my theory. Are these likely issues? Can oil enter water via these components? Second, I need full replacement proceedures or a DIY on these. I found a great DIY on water pump that I used last week, but can't seem to find a DIY process for these components. Any advice would be appreciated! Just don't tell me I have a blown engine :-) Ignorance is blissssssssssss.
  7. Thanks a ton. I didn't have the handbrake on. Now I'm having a wierd problem. Sometimes when it is trying that final latch operation when closing, it hooks, then unhooks, then hooks again, then unhooks, over and over. I noticed that there is a plastic trim piece covering this metal hook that was a bit loose and off kilter. It seems that when I refitted this, the top hooked and stayed hooked (light went off on dash too). Could this be related? Did that plastic piece interfere with the switch that's in the recess where that metal hook goes?
  8. I just bought a 996 convertible with no users manual. Replaced water pump today with great tutorial from here. Now I can't figure out how to lower the convertible top. There is a switch, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Do I have to unlatch something, put the e brake on, something else>?>?? 1999 996 Carerra Cab
  9. Found this link - worked great. The first code it provided worked for me. After entering the code, I had to press the UP button on the right side of the radio in my 1999 996. I was expecting it to just unlock after the 4th digit was entered. But it didn't unlock until I pressed the up button for "enter". This website had the code I needed. (I think it only works for some models) Radio Codes
  10. Perhaps I needed to "Add a reply" instead of "Add a new topic?" 1999 996 Cab Becker CR-210 Radio Model - R 3297 Serial Number - W5022363 THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU If this ended up in the right place (finally :-) That's probably where the confusion is. I was thinking that my "Start a new topic" would put my request in with the others. I'm new to this forum. Maybe right above the link in the FAQ, you could say "When you follow the link below, use the "Add Reply" button. Do not "Start a new topic".
  11. 1999 996 Cab Becker CR-210 Radio Model - R 3297 Serial Number - W5022363 THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU (By the way, inside the 996 forum for Radio Codes, the first (pinned) message has a big link that says "Post your request here". When you click on it, you end up in the Radio Code forum for the Boxter. This is probably why people post their code requests to the wrong category all the time - the link takes you to the wrong place.)
